The Volume N Issue 7 September 2011 Viking Yacht Club Officers 2011 FROM THE HELM LUR VikingYachtClub.com Well summer finally arrives when all the kids are back in school. Better late than never Robert and I spent 6 wonderful weeks having our 2 year old Granddaughter visit. Living arrangements were rather cramped, but we managed. Our daughter suggested we have her longer next summer. We will think about that. They are very busy at that age and Robert and I were exhausted when bedtime came. Robert and I went thru the boat and took off anything we have not used in the last 2 years. Less clutter is what he calls it, or streamlining the space we have. It was great being on the water with fellow Vikings this summer. Cruising on the water with special friends is a precious gift. A committee has been assembled to help recruit new board members. If you are interested in volunteering to be on the Viking board contact, Gary Anspach, Bruce Carlson, Ed or Susie Johnson. To see what positions are available? Or they may take you for a special dingy ride to help you decide. To all those who attended the anchor out in Poulsbo congratulations to the top three winners in the zucchini cook off. 1 st place Alice Johnson, 2nd place Pam Krinbring, 3 rd place Barb and Bill. All dishes were wonderful. We had a great turnout for the Bremerton Cruise new members Bill and Alice Johnson were welcomed into the club. To all those who were aware that we had some minor damage on our door, It has been fixed and looks almost like new. Love you TED. Barb is doing a fantastic job working on the Commodores Ball. We are looking forward to this special night. General meeting is September 28 th at Johnny s in Fife plan on attending so you can get the greatest and latest news about the Viking Club. FROM THE JUNIOR PAST COMMODORE Bill and I had some great fun this August on the Boat, in the Miata and on the Harley. We went to Seafair and watched the Blue Angles and went to Oro Bay crabbing with Ed and Susie, Pam and Steve and Janet. We even had an interesting evening with a ghost ship! Story to follow next LUR! We then took the Harley s over the beautiful North Cascade Highway and after 4 days and almost 700 miles; my bottom was ready to do something else. We took the Miata down to Westport with some friends that have an Austin Healy Sprite and several cars in their car club. We told everyone we were the Japanese version. When we get into the hotel, who do we see there but Wayne Davidson getting ready to go fishing with his buddies. We sure did not expect to see another Viking s clear down there! Well it is sad to think that summer is coming to an end, but we had some wonderful cruises this summer. The VIKING s really came through with raising money for club functions. Between Memorial Day s Casino Night, the 4 th of July s Jell-O shots, Gary s Poker Run and Salmon Dinner, or the Water Ball race at Bremerton, I don t know if I can pick a favorite, but they were all a great time! But now it s time for Carla s Commodore Ball at TYC on October 8 th. We are going to have a great time pulling off something that has never been done at a Commodore Ball before. So if you would like to help decorate on Saturday before the ball, I m still taking offers. I would also like to ask all of you to put together a basket or two for the raffle. Remember our theme is Caribbean (see flyer) and I will need to know if you will be bring something to raffle and your dinner RSVP s by Sept. 30 th. Remember starting October, your 2012 dues of $150.00 are due! Enjoy the rest of summer and get some more boating in! From VYC Historian Peggy Claar No Report this month MEMBERSHIP New Members Bill & Alice Johnson Were welcomed into the club at the Labor Day weekend Cruise Check out their travel blog to learn about the great adventures they have experienced while spending 5 years in Mexico & Central America. Bill is a true blue water Captain and is a great asset to our club. http://www.mvgreywolf.blogspot.com/ PC / Purser - Barb Yakobi51@hotmail.com

S U N S H I N E Live well, love much, and laugh often Carolyn Anspach had a run-in with a raccoon and is undergoing precautionary treatment with rabies shots. Can t wait to hear that story! Frankie Anspach had carpal tunnel surgery early in the summer and was off work for quite a while. I hope that the result will be no more pain in that arm. Ted Burrage had eye surgery and is seeing much better. We heard from Gary Doxon recently that he had a relatively minor surgery that sidelined him over the Labor Day weekend. He is recovering at home. Sunshine had foot surgery two weeks ago causing her and Dave to miss out on the cruise to Bremerton. She is healing well and will soon be back in normal shoes. If we missed anyone/anything, please let us know. Stay well and be happy. RECREATIONAL BOATING ASSOCIATION OF WASHINGTON Visit the website link here for all current news & information http://www.rbaw.org/ IOBG June Lighthouse News Bulletin WA State Parks Boating Safety Advisory Council Report Overview: The April 21 st Advisory Council meeting emphasized the need to get the boaters to get their education card, and to get their boats registered on time for the year (June 2010 expiration). PFD wear rates continue to point to older male boaters that never wear PFDs. Wear rates for children are increasing (it s the law). We again reflected on Seattle YC s Opening Day. We all would like to see the flag officers wearing the selfinflating PFDs around their necks as they salute the SYC Officers at the Cut. Boater Education Status This year s age group is the 31-35 year olds Course of Study Internet served 70% of boaters USCGA and Power Squadron, serve 20% Home Study 5% Council is concerned with the certainty of quality of the internet trained. The State is looking at how to detect and discourage cheating It is projected that over 80,000 boaters will have cards by end of summer. Nation Recreation Boating 2012-2016 Safety Plan An overview of this drafted plan was presented to the Advisory Council. This plan aligns itself with the US Coast Guard s Marine Safety Performance Plan The goal of the plan is to reduce the number of boating deaths based on a 5- year running average. Areas of the plan include Use of Media and rating effectiveness Boater Education and Skills Including On-the-Water Training Life Jacket Programs Additional Laws? This misnamed and misguided legislation is based on the incorrect premise that American taxpayers are subsidizing extravagant lifestyles of yacht owners, overlooking the fact that 75% of all boat owners in the US have a household income of less than $100,000 per year. A "yacht," by definition in the Bill, is any vessel that is 26 feet or longer, and the deduction on interest expense is only applicable if the boat has a head, galley, and sleeping berth. Many boats of this size function as a second home in the same manner as second homes (or R.V's) on land, which enjoy similar tax breaks on their mortgage interest. If this legislation becomes law, sales of boats and boating services would diminish, risking thousands of American jobs. Click here to send an email to your Member of Congress urging them to oppose H.R. 1702. http://www.capwiz.com/nmma/issues/alert/?alertid=46198501&type=co For more information, contact Jim Currie at 202-737-9760 or jcurrie@nmma.org. Waterfront funds available from Interlux Special Offer from Interlux Paints - Relayed by the Recreational Boating Association of Washington. Greetings Mr. Jennerich (RBAW), Was hoping you could help us spread the word to your member clubs. You may not be aware that the deadline for 2011 Interlux Waterfront Challenge grant applications is August 31.. and so far... we have very few applications for the grant funds to be awarded to a community group (yacht clubs are eligible to apply) in the West Coast region. Groups with projects already completed this summer may be eligible to receive the funds, if the project was started March 1, 2011 or later and meets the other eligibility requirements. In these tight times, we would hate to see these funds go begging. November 16 NBC General meeting (& Elections) 7:30pm Location: TOA For info and to apply, visit: http://www.waterfrontchallenge.com
