Walcome (Welcome), On behalf of the Lakeshore District, we welcome you to the Clash of the Clans Camporee With traditional heavy athletic events like caber toss, stone put, hammer toss, and sheaf toss, along with various skill events this camporee is sure to be a spectacle like no other. We hope your Scout will be talking about this event for months (and hopefully years) later. Within the pages of this guide you will find important information that will aide your troop in preparing for your Clan competition. The camporee committee has worked diligently to bring your troop one of the best camporee events ever. GENERAL INFORMATION Camporees are Boy Scout events and like other BSA events, certain rules and regulations must be followed. All scouts and adults attending the event must have a BSA Medical Form (Parts A & B) completed. The forms should be retained in the unit s campsite for easy access if needed. Camp Code: The Scout Oath, Law, Motto, and Slogan are the camp code and should be followed at all times. Roster: A roster for each Troop must be provided at time of online registration and then confirmed at time of check-in. Please include the name of the Senior Patrol Leader for the weekend, the Scout names and rank, leader names with a phone number where they can be reached. Fires: Ground fires are not allowed on property. Raised portable fire pits should be utilized for campfires in your camping areas. Firewood should not be brought from more than 15 miles away from the site. Lanterns: Open flame lanterns of any kind are not permitted in tents. Battery powered lanterns are recommended for use inside tents. Garbage: All trash generated by a unit must be disposed of properly off the Camporee site by troops packing out their own trash. Alcohol & Tobacco: Alcohol and drugs are not allowed. Tobacco product usage is not permitted in the presence of Scouts. A designated smoking area will be identified at the time of registration. Knives: Fixed blade knives are not permitted at BSA events. Folding blade knives with a blade that is 3.5 or less are permitted. Any scout with a knife should be able to provide evidence of his Totem Chip card if asked by any adult or staff member. Failure to produce a Totem Chip card may result in confiscation of knife with it being returned to the leader after the closing ceremony. Transportation: Troops should plan to arrive as a group and utilize as few cars as possible. There will be limited parking and only 1 vehicle will be allowed to remain in the camping area through the Camporee. All additional cars will need to be moved to a remote parking area by 9:00 on Friday night. Safe Scouting: The Guide to Safe Scouting will be the benchmark by which all Scouters will follow. Any questions regarding Scout rules will be directed to the Program Staff or the District Executive.
BACKGROUND There are many legends about the origins of the Scottish games. The oldest traces the Games tradition back to the period of the Roman invasions in the 2nd and 3 rd centuries, where Scottish warriors reputedly displayed their bravery and strength by performing feats of skill and power in front of the opposing army. The most widely accepted tale describes the Games as informal athletic tests by which Kings and Clan Chiefs examined the agility, cunning and physical strength of their clansmen. The victors of these trials were then awarded positions of leadership both on the battlefield and within the clan. The Scottish Highland Games or Heavy Events are the modern continuation of this ancient Celtic tradition. Each event you see this weekend may look like a simple matter or brute strength, but each also requires excellent timing, balance and technique. Believe it or not, these events do use STEM techniques!! The Clash of the Clans Highland Games will combine traditional Celtic sports that originated centuries ago in the Scottish Highlands with a few Scouting twists. Scouts will compete in fun and challenging Celtic tests of strength, endurance and skill. The games are open to all Boy Scouts. Clans: The word clan comes from a Gaelic word meaning children, which denotes family. This is precisely what our Scout troops are families. This weekend the Boys Scouts will not be participating as patrols, but as Clans. Your clan name will be designated by your Clan tartan. Clans will be provided with their tartan flag at the time of registration along with a document highlighting the background and history of the tartan. There are many ways that can help transform your troop into a clan: 1) Develop your clan call this should include your clan name (from your tartan) along with a brief statement about your clan. 2) If possible, make kilts. You don t need to go out and purchase kilts. These can be as simple as buying a roll of fabric, wrapping a piece of fabric around the waist and pinning it in place. (Make sure shorts or running tights are worn under your kilts!) 3) Creation of your campsite entryway As you establish your camp, each unit should build an entryway to their campsite utilizing lashing techniques. There is no limit to the size and will be part of the unit scoring for the overall event. Units will need to provide their own materials for the gateways. There will not be materials available onsite. 4) Decorate your campsite - A Scottish themed campsite will add extra points to the campsite inspection.
Registration: Early Bird Registration is due online no later than Monday, April 2, 2018. Early Bird Registration fee of $18.00 per Scout includes admission to the event, traditional Scottish lunch on Saturday, and an event patch; The regular registration is $25.00 per Scout and includes an admission, traditional Scottish lunch on Saturday, and an event patch as well. All orders must be turned in by Wednesday, April 11, 2018. Arrival and Parking: No one will be allowed to check in before 4 PM. Entrance to the Camporee Area will be on Schneikert Lane. (Do not enter the main entrance to Camp Anokijig.) At the end of Schneikert Lane, the Camporee Staff will be available to direct you to the appropriate location to set up the unit s camping area. [See Map at the end of the Leader Guidebook for direction to Camp Anokijig and Schneikert Lane.] Each troop will be given one parking pass to park in the camping area. Troops will be allowed to bring additional vehicles to the camping site to drop off gear and equipment (15-minute time limit) and then move the vehicles to the designated parking area. We need everyone s patience and cooperation to move gear and Scouts around safely and efficiently. Only one vehicle will be allowed in a unit s camping area after 9 PM on Friday. Troops can park a trailer in their camp area provided that the ground is not muddy. Vehicles must park in the designated parking lot. Vehicle and trailer access to the camping area may be changed/restricted dependent upon ground conditions at the time of the Camporee. Leader Meeting: Friday night 8:30. This is a very important mandatory meeting. All Senior Patrol Leaders along with Scoutmasters must attend. Any other adult leaders within your Troop are welcome to attend also. We will be passing out more information at this meeting and will be answering any questions that you may have. Canned Food Drive: We are asking each troop to participate in our can food drive. The food will be given to a local food pantry. Please drop off your cans when you enter the camp at check-in.

INTRODUCTION: Opening Ceremony The Saturday Morning Opening Ceremony will be different than any opening ceremony your troop may have attended. At 8:00 AM your troop must report to the Opening Ceremony grounds. Please follow these parameters: - Each troop will choose a Scout to carry their Highland themed flag. The units will receive their flag at the time of registration. - One other scout will be chosen to be the torch bearer. The clan s will receive their torch as part of the opening ceremony. - As each clan name is called, the clan will give an enthusiastic call. The enthusiastic call is the announcement that your troop is present and will be participating in the weekend events. - The torch bearer will come forward to the central fire and light their clan torch. Once the torch is lit, they will return with the torch to their clan and place it in the provided holder/stand. - The flag bearer will then post their flag at a designated clan location where it will remain until the closing ceremony. - Themed costumes such as a kilt are encouraged. (You will receive points for this) Lunch After the completion of the first 5 sessions, we will be serving a traditional Scottish lunch for all participants. Units should bring plates, bowls, cups, and utensils for lunch. During the lunch, there may be a Unit Leader competition (for points) that would be fun to watch. More info will be available at the Leaders Meeting on Friday night. Closing Ceremony At the conclusion of the games, all clans should report back to the Ceremony Grounds for a brief closing ceremony. Clan members should line up by their clan tartan and torch similar to the opening ceremony. After the closing, the clans will be dismissed to their camping area to prepare and eat dinner. Closing Campfire / Awards Ceremony By 7:00, all clan members and leaders should report to the Camp fire bowl for the Closing campfire. During the campfire, we will review the activities of the day and celebrate the achievements of all of the scouts. The Camporee awards will be presented as part of the ceremony. At the conclusion of the campfire, we will turn the events over to the Order of the Arrow for the Callout ceremony. Flag Retirement Near the conclusion of the closing campfire, we will hold a flag retirement ceremony. If units have any flags that they need to retire, please bring them to the Leader Meeting on Friday night so that we can plan accordingly for the retirement. Order of the Arrow Callout Ceremony This event will be run completely by the Order of the Arrow. More information will be available at the Leader Meeting on Friday night.
Highland Games: The biggest portion of your weekend will be spent at the events. They will be divided into two segments; a morning and afternoon segment. Listed below are the time schedules for the morning and afternoon events. 9:00 AM 12:15 PM Scouts will participate in 5 sessions during the morning session, each being 45 minutes long. During each session, the Clan will participate in a Highland Game. Additionally, each clan will be part of a service project which will occupy 2 sessions. 1:30 5:15 PM Scouts will participate in 5 sessions during the morning session, each being 45 minutes long. During each session, the Clan will participate in a Highland Game. Additionally, each clan will be part of a service project which will occupy 2 sessions. The service project could be either during the morning or afternoon session depending on the Clan rotation schedule. The Highland Games will be either Heavy Athletics or Skill competitions. The Heavy Athletics will be games of strength while the Skill events will be knowledge and skill focused. For the Heavy Athletic Events, to promote more even competition, they will be broken down by age group. This way youth of similar ages and abilities can compete against each other versus having younger scouts needing to compete directly against older scouts. Each event provides the potential for a unit to score 20 event points. Heavy Athletics include: Scottish tradition for heavy athletics is all clansmen wear kilts. Kilts are encouraged but optional this weekend. Age groupings will be for 11 13 year old scouts and another grouping for 14 17 year old scouts. 1. Farmer s walk the competitor picks up two weighted objects, one in each hand, and walks around a course. The entire clan will line up in single file; the first member carries the weighted object around the course, sets them down, moves to the end of the line, and the second clansman picks up the weights and starts to move again. This is a timed event for all clan members. The walk must be completed once by each scout plus any additional tries for a total number of walks based on the size of the largest clan. (i.e. if largest registered clan has 9 scouts - all clans must do the 'walk' a total of nine times.) 2. Sheaf Toss a sheaf is a bag of hay. You will hurl it straight up into the air over an adjustable crossbar with a pitchfork. It s high jump with pitchforks!! Each scout will receive 3 tries and the height will be based by age group. 3. Caber Toss the caber toss is a traditional Scottish athletic event practiced at the Scottish Highland Games involving the tossing of a large wooden pole called a caber, similar to a telephone pole. It is said to have developed from the need to toss logs across narrow chasms to cross them. In Scotland, the caber is usually made from a Larch Pine Tree. A caber is typically 19 ft. 6 in. tall and weighs 175 pounds. Ours will not be as big. We will have smaller size ones for the scouts to use. Participants will be required to stand up the pole, lift it from the bottom and hold it upright. Then with forward motion flip the pole trying to keep the pose as straight as possible. Distance will be calculated to the distance of the colored end tip and a one-foot deduction will be taken for each degree off of straight. We will
use a clock face for degree calculations i.e. 1, 2, 3 8, 10, 11 o clock. Each scout will receive 3 tries and the pole size will be based by age group. 4. Clachneart it s a rounded stone and you throw it like a shot put. Distance counts. Each scout will receive 3 tries to throw for distance and the stone size will be based by age group. 5. Hammer Toss There is no doubt as to the origins of throwing the hammer. Wherever this tool was used - smithies, quarries, or farms - men diverted themselves by throwing the wooden shaft sledgehammer. We ll be using a replica that will be tossed for distance. The heavy weight will be about 5 pounds. The best of three throws will count. In this competition, clan members will throw (underhanded) a 5# hammer for distance. Each scout will receive 3 tries to throw for distance and the score will be based by age group. Skill Event s Include: 1. Gowf - Golf (Pitching Competition) - It is generally accepted that modern golf developed in Scotland from the Middle Ages onwards. For this competition, competitors will utilize a club to pitch/chip their ball into a target with various scoring rings. The clans combined score for the best 10 balls will be used to determine the clan score. 2. Tomahawk Throw Each clan member in this event will have at least 3 throws with the tomahawk. The best 5 throws for the clan will be accumulated to provide the clan score. 3. Scottish Trivia Each clan will be asked 20 trivia questions about Scotland, Scottish history, and Highland games. Each question will be worth 1 point. Service As part of the event, each unit will be providing service to Camp Anokijig. Two sessions on a unit s daily schedule are dedicated to providing service to the Camp. During this time, each Clan will report to the designated area where the staff at Camp Anokijig will provide direction on the service that the clan will be providing.
Event Competition Introduction: Amid growing tension among the Lakeshore District Scouting Clans, Camp Anokijig has mustered a huge army of Boy Scout clans. These clans will be marching into battle to face off against the Boy Scout other units with the intention of permanent conquest and ultimate glory as the compete to be the best: The Lakeshore District Clan Champion. The victor of this event will be determined based on scoring for multiple events throughout the weekend that include feats of strength and skill. 1. Canned Food Drive 10 cans total = 5 points 20 cans total = 10 points 30 cans total = 15 points 40+ cans total = 20 points 2. Opening Ceremony Troop Call = up to 10 points 3. Themed Costumes (kilts) 100% Troop participation = 20 points 50% Troop Participation = 10 points At least 1 scout is wearing a kilt = 5 points 4. Scottish Themed Campsite Decorations = 40 points maximum Lashed Campsite Entryway = 20 points Campsite decorations = 10 points Clean campsite = 10 points (points will be deducted for cleanliness violations) 6. Heavy Athletics Farmer s Walk, Sheaf Toss, Caber Toss, Clachneart = points awarded between 1 20 points in each separate event There will be the ability to earn 1 to 20 points at each activity with possible bonus points. The more points the better (except in golf). 7. Each event will have a leadership score for the Clan. Since Boy Scouts is a Scout Led program, leadership will be evaluated on several items: - Adherence to instructions from the event leader - Level of leadership demonstrated by Clan Leader (SPL) - Level of involvement by Adult Leaders (few points will be awarded if leaders/adults interfere with the youth leadership)
