Picture D. Rózsa Raburne War V 2011 From the Chronicler! Hello my wonderful readers, Well it s not long until the end of the year. Cold War and Spring War has passed and the battle for a new monarchy approaches with the upcoming November Crown hosted by Radburne. With the recent passing of Radburne War V and the upcoming November Crown, this edition we have a profile about Radburne to learn a little information about our Western house. We also have a report from our Marshal Lord Andrew Daniels about the progress of our new hall. We also have a few photos from Cold War but have to wait in anticipation for photos of the just passed Spring War, which will feature in the November Folia Roani. You can also view the results from the second (September) Rowany Tourney held at our new hall. I now have access to emails sent directly to the Rowany Chronicler. So if you want to send me any articles, event advertisements, notifications, feedback or photos; send them via the Chronicler s link on the contacts page of the Rowany Website at http://lochac.sca.org/rowany/?page_id=87 Yours faithfully, Dragana Rózsa From the Seneschal Well Spring is here and Cold days have gone away thank all the gods and goddesses. Cold War was run and we had a good time with new faces and familiar faces abounding. I would like to thank all the help in running this event and especially in pack down where we were out of their by 4 pm when I thought I was going to be home at 9 pm. I appreciated it a LOT. On an organisational level the Barony is looking for the following offices Acquistor Constable Herald Picture T. Podolsak. Spring War 2010 Please contact me if you are interested in the above positions. We welcome Okewaite s new Seneschal and our new Captain of Archers Ulric. Coming up we have our regular invasion of Mordenvale that some call Spring War but I call Grog Destruction, Crown Tournament in our region of Radburne, The Ursulan Feast and Yule in December. The next few months will find us all busy with many projects and events to be part of. I hope you enjoy them all with a light heart. Berenger 3

Photo D. Rózsa Baronial Changeover July 2011 Greeting All! From the Baronage Another eventful month! It is wonderful to be so involved with such an active and motivated Barony. This past month saw several events, including Cold War. This was held in the last weekend of Winter, the end of August and was a magnificent credit to both the organisers and the Barony. An excellent event and our sincere thanks go out to Count Sir Berenger for stewarding the event. Our thanks also go to Sir Torg for the More Meat Feast (there was indeed much meat!) and Count Sir Theuderic for his war scenarios - great fun for all fighting and watching alike, although I think the Stunt Baroness suffered some injuries during the mayhem. Although she was captured and held by the invading forces for many of the scenarios, the combine forces of Rowany held true at the times of the greatest import and the Baroness was held by our troops to win the War! His Excellency visited the Canton of Okewaite for a weekend tournament. Their Majesties Cornelius and Elizabeth graced us with their attendance at this event - it is wonderful to have them visit our Barony for events both big and small. During this event there was a Seneshal change over. We now take this opportunity to thank Alys Dietsch for her excellent service, vision and momentum in the canton for the past years. Without her hard work, many of the great things happening in and around Okewaite may not have taken place. At this event, to show our appreciation of this, we took great pleasure in welcoming Lady Alys to the Order of the Golden Staple. Also at this event - the Arts and Sciences award - the order of the Rowan Berries - was awarded to Jeanne of Okewaite for her consistency in many fields. From what we have been shown and told, her success in anything she turns her hand to is a great credit to her. We now welcome Honore Corbaut as the new Okewaite Seneshal - We are glad to offer her any support and assistance we can. We will make ourselves available to Honore's requests and questions whenever we can. There are many other things that have been taking place in Rowany over the past weeks but unfortunately time is upon us at this stage, so our missive this month is brief. Many thanks go out to all of the people who keep the wheels on Rowany turning. We are continually astounded by the hard work and efforts that all put in keep us moving forward. Faithfully, Baron Loyola and Baroness Annora 4

Photo D. Rózsa Yule December 2010 From the Marshal Greetings Rowany from Lord Andrew Daniels, First of all I'd like to comment on the success of the new hall, numbers fighting seem to be strong with a large amount of newcomers. Thursday is our main practice night and Tuesday night drills first off then normal fighting later on. On Tuesday the 13th of September there were 7 new heavy fighters. I'd like to link to the fighters handbook for the newcomers to have a look over: http://sca.org.au/marshal/docs/fighters-handbook.pdf and also the rapier rules: http://lochac.sca.org/rapier/index.php/rules. The first and second tourneys have been run in the new hall, the winner of the first being Lord Ariston Hegelokos in the counted blows tourney. Jarl Alfar of Attica and Lord Theodulfus Ambrose winning the second tourney in a pairs tourney. The most recent tourney having fifteen fighters entering the list. Six fencers were also practicing in the hall at the time. On Sunday the 11th of September a war practice was held at the playing fields of St Peters public school. We had nine heavy fighters and four combat archers, we also had another three archers doing target archery and firing into the war scenarios from the sidelines. Thanks to Ulric for running the training on the day and Stigh for organising it. We plan to have another war practice two weeks after Spring War - more details to come. I am still selling thrusting tips ($25) and sword length rattan ($15), I will have these with me on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the hall. Contact me at daniel.p.quinlan@gmail.com to organise buying rattan outside Tuesdays and Thursdays. I'm also happy for people to contact me if they have any combat related enquiries, if I don't personally have the answer I can point you to someone who does. November Crown AS XLVI (picture http://www.midrealm.org/unicorn/medieval-lists.jpg) In the far western reaches of the Barony of Rowany in the Kingdom of Lochac, a great battle was held at Dragon Hill as there was no named heir. As the dust settled across the fields, the forces were evenly matched and no clear victor was to be found. In order to stop the bloodshed, the reigning Monarch decided a grand tournament would be held to determine the next King and Queen of Lochac, with a field feast held in celebration of the Heirs in the evening. All who would witness are called to gather from 4 th November 2011 at Dragon Hill with the tourney to be held on Saturday 5 th November. There will be merchants, Arts and Sciences, Target Archery and other entertainments throughout the weekend. Where? Dragon Hill (29L Gidgee Road, Dubbo NSW Australia) When? Friday 4th to Sunday 6th November, 2011 Bookings close 14th October 2011. For further details, please go to http://lochac.sca.org/radburne/?page_id=399 or contact the Steward, Lady Katrijn van Delden at katrijn.van.delden@gmail.com or 0419 850067. While this may be widely known, the specifics of the timetable of events have been updated for the event surrounding the Tournament. The event starts on Friday 4 November and concludes Sunday 6 November. The timetable can be seen at http://lochac.sca.org/radburne/?page_id=445 Kingdom of Lochac Barony of Rowany House Radburne 8

Greetings all! Fighter Practice Tourney, September 2011 This September the monthly fighter practice tourney was a seeded pair tourney (triple-kill, double-elimination, for the curious). The following fighters participated: Lord Miles de Colwell, Sir Berenger of Nancy, Enderl of the Turnips, Theodulfus Vindoclabius Audax, Lord Andew Daniels, Sir Alfar of Attica, Lord Ariston Hegelokos, Lady Alessandra di Messina, Jadwiga Wojciechowa, Yorekr Radgestr, Lord Stig Joghenson, Lord Matt the Black, Sir Gui von Oberhausen, Don Caleb Adolphus and Baldwin. The final was fought between Berenger with Matt, and Alfar with Theodulfus; Alfar and Theodulfus were victorious, and will be deciding the format of the next tourney. Yours in service, Lady Lilavati Playlet: Dance of Death / Death and the Lady Contributed by Damocles Truhart Death and the Lady http://www.contemplator.com/england/death.html (for words and music) Lesley Nelson-Burns Information This ballad was printed on a broadside by J. Deacon sometime between 1683 and 1700. It was printed as The Great Messenger of Mortality, or a Dialogue betwixt Death and a Lady. A broadside of the ballad appears in the Roxburghe Collection. An earlier version is the second half of Beauties Warning, 1681-2.* Variants of the ballad were in several operas including The Cobler's Opera (1729), The Fashionable Lady (1730) and A New Year's Ode (1737). There are many variations to the tune and lyrics under the same title. This tune is similar to the Deacon tune. This version was collected in Sussex in 1893. The midi covers only the first few verses. The Dance of Death (conversations between Death and his victims) was a popular theme throughout the 14th and 15th centuries and again in the 18th century. DEATH 'Fair Lady, throw those costly robes aside, No longer may you glory in your pride; Take leave of all your carnal vain delight, I'm come to summon you away this night.' LADY 'What bold attempt is this? Pray let me know From whence you come, and whither I must go. Shall I, who am a lady, stoop or bow To such a pale-faced visage? Who art thou?' (..continued from end of last column page 10) D. 'This is a slender frivolous excuse! I have you fast! I will not let you loose! Leave her to Providence, for you must go Along with me, whether you will or no! If Death commands the King to leave his crown He at my feet must lay his sceptre down; Then, if to Kings I do not favour give But cut them off, can you expect to live 9

D. 'Do you not know me? I will tell you then: I am he that conquers all the sons of men, No pitch of honour from my dart is free, My name is Death! Have you not heard of me?' L. 'Yes; I have heard of thee, time after time; But, being in the glory of my prime, I did not think you would have come so soon; Why must my morning sun go down at noon?' D. 'Talk not of noon! you may as well be mute; There is no time at all for vain dispute, Your riches, gold, and garments, jewels bright, Your house, and land, must on new owners light.' L. 'My heart is cold; it trembles at such news! Here's bags of gold, if you will me excuse And seize on those; and finish thou their strife, Who wretched are, and weary of their life. Are there not many bound in prison strong In bitter grief? and souls that languish long, Who could but find the grave a place of rest From all their grief; by which they are opprest. Besides there's many with a hoary head And palsied joints; from whom all joy is fled Release thou them whose sorrows are so great, And spare my life until a later date!' D. 'Though thy vain heart to riches is inclined Yet thou must die and leave them all behind. I come to none before their warrant's sealed, And, when it is, they must submit, and yield. Though some by age be full of grief and pain, Till their appointed time they must remain; I take no bribe, believe me, this is true. Prepare yourself to go; I'm come for you.' L. 'But if, oh! if you could for me obtain A freedom, and a longer life to reign, Fain would I stay, if thou my life wouldst spare. I have a daughter, beautiful and fair, I wish to see her wed, whom I adore; Grant me but this, and I will ask no more?' (The last part of the music must be repeated to fit the extra line) (. Continues next column page 9..) Beyond the limits of your time and space? No! I must send you to another place.' (The last part of the music must be repeated to fit the extra line) L. 'Ye learned doctors, now exert your skill, And let not Death on me obtain his will! Prepare your cordials, let me comfort find, My gold shall fly like chaff before the wind!' D. 'Forbear to call! that skill will never do; They are but mortals here as well as you. I give the fatal wound, my dart is sure, And far beyond the doctors' skill to cure. Flow freely you can let your riches fly To purchase life, rather than yield and die! But, while you flourished here with all your store, You would not give one penny to the poor. Though in God's name they sue to you did make You would not spare one penny for His sake. My Lord beheld wherein you did amiss, And calls you hence, to give account of this!' L. 'Oh! heavy news! must I no longer stay? How shall I stand at the great Judgement Day?' Down from her eyes the crystal tears did flow, She says, 'None knows what I now undergo! Upon my bed of sorrow here I lie! My selfish life makes me afraid to die! My sins are great, and manifold, and foul; Lord Jesus Christ have mercy on my soul! Alas! I do deserve a righteous frown! Yet pardon, Lord, and pour a blessing down!' Then with a dying sigh her heart did break, And did the pleasures of this world forsake. Thus may we see the mighty rise and fall, For cruel Death shews no respect at all To those of either high or low degree. The great submit to Death as well as we. Though they are gay, their life is but a span, A lump of clay, so vile a creature's Man! Then happy they whom God hath made his care, And die in God, and ever happy are! The grave's the market place where all must meet Both rich and poor, as well as small and great; If life were merchandise, that gold could buy, The rich would live -- only the poor would die. 10

POSITION VACANCY Rowany Herald Fellow Rowanites and Lurkers From Afar, It has been almost 4 years that I have been the Herald of Rowany, and I feel that it is time to pass the office on. Not because it has become too onerous, but because I shall be going on a research student exchange fairly soon, and so will be unable to discharge my duties. As such, I am advertising for a replacement. If you don't know all that much about book heraldry but really dig shouting, that's cool; in fact, that's how I got into the game. All you really need for the job is patience, willingness to learn and space for a couple of storage boxes worth of paperwork. Said paperwork being the Rowany Herald's archives and some reference texts. Interested persons are requested to respond to me at herald@lochac.sca.org, so that I can pass on the list of applicants and my recommendation to the Seneschal of Rowany and the Crux Australis Principal Herald. Photos from Cold War Please consider yourself for this office, and trust that I remain, Yours in Service, The Honourable Padraig Lowther, Cinquefoil Herald 11

Many thanks to the two other groups who also bid for this event. The high quality of all three bids made the decision difficult. In service, Catherine de Arc Lochac Deputy Seneschal 14

Venue For Musicians Discussion Apologies to the people I promised this too for the time it's taken me to organise this. For those who were at the Guild Weekend and would like to continue the discussion of a possible Musician's Guild, and for those who'd just like to get in contact with more musicians - you might want to join: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/lochac-musicians/ or ignore me and tell me to go away :) Joanna For those who read Fantasy. Passing of Author Sarah Douglass Sara Douglass lost her battle with cancer at approximately 5 o'clock 27/9/11in Hobart, Tasmania. She was only 54. Today we've lost one of the greats. We're poorer for the loss but richer for the time we had with her. Her ashes will be spread over the garden of her home at 5pm 30/9/11 for those who wish to remember her. We will also be remembering her at GSG. It seems appropriate. Hrolf New Baronial Officers At the September Baronial Senate it was announced that Lady Lilivati, from house Sparta, would henceforth be taking over as Rowany List keeper and Lord Ulric Johansson, from House Drakkar, as Captain of Archers. Huzzah for our new Baronial Officers. Website Changeover Complete http://rowany.lochac.sca.org/?p=667 The Rowany website was relaunched to coincide with the investiture of the new Baron and Baroness, Don Loyola Juan Sanchez Mendoza and Lady Annora Martin. At the time, the old website was still available for those who wished to access archival data. As of this post, all data (archival and current) now solely resides on the website. Please update your bookmarks if you have not already done so. Naturally, if you have any comments, concerns or complaints about the website, feel free to contact the Webminister 15
