President s Message Yes! It's finally summer! I decided to do something totally different for the president s newsletter article this time. June is our first month of summer. Ramses II built his temple at Abu Simbel at a specific angle so that the sun on the March equinox could shine on the face of his statue all the way at the back of the temple. So, for those of you building temples or pyramids in your yards, the June equinox will be on the 21st., or perhaps you would rather do something less adventurous and fly our flag on Flag Day, which is on June 14th. In July we celebrate Independence Day on the 4th. As we sit and watch all those wonderful fireworks, we should remember all the women and men both in and out of the military who helped make this country great. My father and all the other males in his high school class received draft notices as they got their diplomas. My father quickly joined the army air corps, and after basic training and flight school (which he missed one-third of because he had his appendix removed), he became a flyboy for bombers. He had asked my mother's dad for her hand in marriage, but her dad said not before he left for the war. So, one day, instead of going to work, my mother defied her parents and took a train from Illinois to West Virginia and married my father the day he shipped out. (I told this story at my mother's funeral, and her relatives were shocked that a conservative young woman like my mother had actually done this!) Subsequently, my father was shot down over Czechoslovakia. After 18 months of being on the run, he reached the coast of France, and with the help of the French resistance, crossed the channel and made it safely back to re-join his wing. He was the sole survivor of his crew. I learned this when I was in high school. I was shocked. My parents were "old and boring." After all they were in their early 40s by then! How could they have done all this? You see, we never know what contributions people have made! And finally we have August, the final month of summer. This is the month for those last backyard barbecues, those last fun days at the swimming pool, the time when the children get ready to go back to school, and the snowbirds start thinking heading south. Have fun and enjoy your summer! Lunch with Guys and Dolls April 2015 3
