Upcoming Events November 5 Akornebir Business Meeting (see Akornebir minutes) 6-8 Fall Crown Council Shire of Wyewood 12 Wastekeep Baronial Council, 6:30 PM 14 As You Like it Canton of Akornebir 21 Harvest Protector- Pendale 28 Feast of St. Odo in Hauksgardr (Hood River & Wasco County) December 5 Vulkanfeldt Yule Feast and Champions Tourney 12 Wastekeep Yule Feast A Missive From His Excellency Baron Styrkarr Unto the most noble and prosperous populace of Wastekeep does Baron Styrkarr bring greetings. What a fabulous year this has been! Wastekeep has been drawing increasing and record numbers of people to our great events (I mean we ve always known we put on a fun event but word is spreading now!). Despite the vicious pig-plague Baron s had well over 100 people and made a profit despite having a hosted feast. We re excited for next year we ve got new fighters, new Sergeant s candidates, new Sergeants, an active page program and most importantly, we get to go to war with Wealdsmere again! Many of you are aware of the havoc wreaked by my squire, Halla Vinirsgata, when she announced that she would attempt the Sergeant s trials in both Wastekeep and Wealdsmere. The rift started by the fostering of Clarissa, the Wealdsmere Courtier has exploded into a great chasm and the Baronesses are at each other s throats. Indeed the fox fur has been flying. Of course I nobly attempted to mend the breach by travelling to Octoberfest and speaking kind words and offering gifts of friendship to their Excellencies, Caieth and Araviere, but was coldly rebuked! Noble citizens of Wastekeep, I m afraid the only solution is more war (woohoo!) As we plan and arm ourselves for the wars to ensue this spring, we plan to attend the following upcoming events and would love to have fellow Wastekeepians with us: As You Like It (Akornebir Nov 14), Yule Feast (Vulkanfeldt, Dec 5), Yule Feast (Wastekeep, Dec 12), Twelfth night (Glymm Mere Jan 8-10), and Ursalmas (Aquaterra Jan 29-31). I am also thinking of a journey to the great war at Estrella in February and would solicit the opinions and company of any local fighters who are interested. A last word we are soliciting award recommendations for Yule Feast for all awards, but especially for the Order of the Silver Fox. Please nominate someone in the local group who you feel has made invaluable contributions in many areas over many years. This is Wastekeep s highest honor and we wish the populace to take an active part in this decision. Thanks again to all who have worked so hard making this year so wonderful and successful. In service, Styrkarr 2

Minutes for Baronial Council Meeting held on October 8, 2009 held in Walla Walla In attendance: Roth, Arthur, Rowena, Mairghread, Ulrik, Meaghan, Ysabella, Katherine, Luaithrenn, Stjarna, Styrkarr, Dyon, Cat, Rowland, Ysabella, Thorkell, Aisling, Kora Thorkellsdottir, Svala, Sadhbh, Brighid The meeting was called to order at 6:37 PM by Deputy Seneschal Ulrik since Ysabella was going to be slightly delayed. Canton Report: Katherine reported that planning for the As You Like it Event is moving ahead. It will be in Waitsburg though the site has not been pinned down because of some repairs that are ongoing in the town hall. A & S and Rapier championships will be held. The canton now has a first aider, Thorkell. The Chronicler has stepped down and Aisling has volunteered to take the job pending posting of the office and a vote. Solveig has also resigned as Herald. Erin may take that office but she is also the Chatelaine so may need to give that up. The Canton is looking for game birds for the feast. They will provide meat and bread and attendees should bring potluck side dishes/desserts. They will have a kids table of foods popular with the smalls. There was discussion of the possibility of having another dessert auction. Minutes for the September meeting were approved with the correction of the spelling of Mairghread s name. Officers Reports Arts and Sciences: Banners were ready and used at Baron s. Fabric was slightly over budget but Mairghread will donate the cost of the rest. $10.22 is being returned from what was budgeted from the poles. She would like to schedule another workshop to sew more banners and do some serging before May Crown. There was discussion but no date was pinned down. Quarterly reports from the Barony and the Canton have been turned in. Mairghread would like to schedule a scroll painting day in January or early February. She would like to have a monthly workday if there is enough interest. Her Excellency thought that regular scroll workshops could offer help to Sergeants candidates too. Mairghread also turned in receipts for food from the feast for Baron s. Baron and Baroness: War with Wealdsmere is brewing over Halla s conflicted fealty, and will most likely take place at Honor War. (If you missed Saturday night s court at Baron s, you missed the catalyst for this!) Honor War will be on the 17 th of April, and for once, won t conflict with the Ren Faire in Walla Walla. The Baroness will be attending archery fest this weekend and both of Their Excellencies will be at Wealdmere s Toys for Tots on the 17 th. On the 18 th, there will be armoring at the Baron s from 9-12. (Pages and Sergeants will also meet that day, see notes under Pages.) The Baron issued many thank yous to those who helped with Baron s, especially Arthur, Roland, Ysabella, Roth and Mairghread. He was thankful to those (Arthur, Roth & others) who worked hard to get the new trailer and shelving ready. Due to work & illness, the Baron was unable to help with the project, so he donated the cost of the shelving that was installed. The Baron s armor stolen 17 years ago has been found for sale on ebay and is going to be returned! Seneschal: Quarterly Reports are due November 1 st. Please send a copy to Ysabella and Their Excellencies. Ulrik has accepted the position of Deputy Seneschal. The Inlands Seneschals discussed next year s calendar at Baron s. Springfest will be June 4 th and 5 th. (Grimwith wants the second weekend in June.) If there is a need to approve funds between meetings, please contact the Seneschal. She will make the decision to poll officers. Reeve s Report: The trailer approved at the last meeting was purchased for a total of $3,653.49 including tax and license. That did not include a spare tire and the longer lock needed. Ulrik moved and Mairghread seconded a motion to approve $100.00 to purchase the tire and lock. Motion passed unanimously. Bank balance is $3196.32 in checking and $1,441.86 in savings. The check to pay for Sacajawea Park is still out. Dyon suggested some tools that need to be purchased to keep with the castle trailer, and we need a tool box that could be attached to the tongue. Katherine will ask Neil about extras he may have of some of the needed tools. Roth will investigate the box and bring an estimate to council. Baroness Stjarna asked the council to think of ideas that could build up our treasury. There was discussion about bake sales or auctions at events, and Rowland mentioned that we did make about $1500 on the 2008 Coronation event, so hosting more Crown events could be a way to bring in money. Ysabella does have some members helping with research on 12 th Night sites for a future bid. Webmaster: He is helping with a database for 12 th Night volunteers for this year. Marshal: Practice will move to the indoor site at New Horizon the first Tuesday in November. Ulrik doesn t have the final confirmation on that site yet, but doesn t expect that there will be any problem. The Inlands practice hasn t been well attended by heavies from outside Wastekeep, so we will offer to host it in Wastekeep for the winter. Dyon brought some info on powder coating that could be used on new eric stakes we need to make. Baron Styrkarr has done it before and will do it with rented equipment if we want. Lists: We had 4 tourneys at Baron s and all went well. There were 31 fighters in the heavy tournament. Youth Armored Combat: 3 fighters entered the Youth Combat tourney at Baron s. The page formerly known as Rontu 6

won. Rowland has one more helmet for YAC that needs padding & strap so he will bring it to armoring. Chief Scribe: 2 backlog and several new scrolls were given out at Baron s. Chatelaine: She is out of town but sent thanks to those who came and helped with the demo in Sept. She wants to have another one in the spring. Dyon suggested organizing a library Arts and Sciences day that would include displays and presentations. He ll contact Luaithrenn to talk about the idea. Gold Key: Gold Key was at Baron s. We need to sort through and weed out some things. The plan is for the Gold Key to be able to be kept in the trailer. Greateboke: Turned in receipts for $8.18 for photos of Baron s for the scrapbook. Librarian: Not present-out of town Dean of Pages: The next meeting will be held on the 18 th. Anyone can come at noon to (bring food) and eat. The meeting will start at 12:30 with YAC fighting after. Sergeants will meet at 2:30. Packets for Sergeants are still being revised. Pied Piper: Erin wasn t present but sent word to thank everyone who helped with children s activities at Baron s. People liked having the roped off area. Some of the kids were disappointed that they weren t allowed to play in the castle. We discussed organizing a time for next year that children could play in the castle with supervision. Kids enjoyed the vegetable creations and she hopes to do it again next year. Fools: The group is traveling to Ashland to see some plays. Ithra: Not present but sent thanks to all who came to the Bead Making Ithra. First Aider: Supplies were at Baron s but we need to make sure they get to the Gate so people can get ahold of them easily. They can t be kept in the trailer because some supplies will be quickly degraded by heat. Old Business: Baron s Ball: Event was well attended in spite of the plague. Price of the park increased this year and we didn t really know that ahead of time. He gave us a break last year but really had to charge by the rules this year. Major expenses were $421.00 for the feast $560.71 for the park and $75.00 for Non member surcharge fees. We still made a profit of $478.29. Roth suggested that we make sure the costs are in writing in the future. Baron Styrkarr & Ulrik suggested we reserve for Springfest and Baron s next year, but keep looking at other sites too. They don t officially book until January but they will pencil us in for our June and October dates. There was a suggestion that Ash Hollow Winery (Walla Walla area) would let us use a large field near their winery but Roth brought up that since there are no restrooms we would spend at least $400.00 on port-a-potties for a site that wouldn t have nearly as many amenities. Chronicler: Turned in receipts for copies and stamps totaling $102.70. She prepaid for 1000 copies at UPS which brings them down to 5 cents for each black and white copy. (10 cents for double sided.) (A price increase was discussed under new business.) Yule Feast: Arianwen wasn t present, but people think she plans a potluck. Roth has secured the Kennewick Masonic Lodge for the 12 th of December. May Crown 2010: Ysabella is autocratting. Mairghread is handling preregistration. It will be set up through the ACCEPS program that one of the other kingdoms and will cost us about $15.00 to set up so people can use credit cards to pre-register. Sir Brand will be running two fundraisers for the Kingdom at our event, the $10 reserved parking (50 spaces) and the rent-atent area, which we just need to set aside space for. He will provide tents for rent. Groups can sponsor a tent by agreeing to do the set up & tear down of a tent Arianwen will be writing some new directions to the site since the ones the fairgrounds publish aren t correct.. New Business Sale of old trailer: We received a letter from Lyonsmarche to inquire about the sale of the trailer. We will be selling it as is. Ulrik moved that we sell it for $100. Motion was tabled. Discussion covered what we have invested in the last few years, including reinforcing the tongue, adding a spare tire, replacing tires, packing & greasing bearings. Arthur mentioned that it still has one of the old tires so maybe we should sell it with the condition that they replace that tire before using it. Buddy recommended that there should be no conditions. We also considered our role as a barony in supporting smaller groups in the region. Ulrik then withdrew his earlier motion and moved that we donate it to Lyonmarche. Motion was seconded by Styrkarr and passed unanimously. Arthur will make arrangements for them to pick it up. Price increase for newsletter: A basic issue of the Word is costing a minimum of $1.04 for stamps and copies with no other supplies allowed for. That means we spend more than $12.48 for a year s paper subscription. The Chronicler asked for a price increase to at least $13.00 but $14.00 would be more realistic. The council felt strongly that we should go to 15.00 now. Ulrik moved that we raise the price for paper subscriptions to $15.00. It was seconded and passed unanimously. Subscriptions are due at the end of December. Email price will remain at $3.00. Purchase of new shade popups: There was discussion at Baron s of purchasing a couple of new pop ups like the one Arianwen got on sale, and a polling of officers at the event gave approval. It turned out that they were no longer available so no purchase was made. Haunted Forest: Buddy has been in touch with the park ranger at Sacagawea about the Haunted Forest which will run for 4 weekend in October on Friday and Saturday nights. They will feed you at no cost and if you sign in for the Barony, we will get some share of the money raised. (Most is going to charity.) Show up about 5 to 5:30 for makeup and food. You can wear your own costume if you like. They d like to volunteers to stay until about 11. Next month s meeting will be on November 12, back in Pasco at the regular location. Meeting adjourned at 8:30 7

Seneschals Ramblings... Did you catch yourself at an event this past year thinking to yourself "I wonder if I could autocrat?" or "I would love to autocrat an event?" If you did now is the time to act! The Barony of Wastekeep will be looking for autocrats for next years events soon!!! Who can be an autocrat? ~ any paid member of the SCA can be an autocrat (of legal age) What does it take to be an autocrat? ~ An Autocrat is responisble for finding a site for the event, scheduling the event, finding a feast o crat, delegating contests, tournaments, set up and tear downs and of course having fun while running the event. Preparing the event information form for Kingdom Calendar and sending in a crier announcement. (Baronial officers that have event buisness i.e. exchequer, gold key, master of stables, pied piper, herald etc are required to be at events to follow through with thier office, if they are not available they will need to find a stand in and notify the autocrat and seneschal) Want to know more about autocratting and the steps of setting up an event and running it you should read the Autocrats Handbook. You can find this great reference at http://www. wastekeep.org/documents/autocrats-friend.pdf. If you would like to autocrat one of our next events please let your seneschal know. Want to try out autocratting, but think that you need help with it, just let your seneschal know and they can find a seasoned autocrat to be your co autocrat. Looking forward to new autocrats stepping forward this coming year. HL Ysabella Greene Barony of Wastekeep Seneschal Chronicler s Notes Subscriptions for the 2010 Word are due by the end of December. The $12.00 that we have been charging for the year long paper subscription has not been covering costs in recent months. At the October Council Meeting, I proposed raising the price to at least $13.00 but to be sure that the price is allows for a few supplies beyond printing and stamps, we really need to go to $14.00. The Council felt strongly that we should set the price at $15.00 instead so that there is a bit more leeway for occasional larger issues. The motion to raise the subscription to $15.00 passed unanimously. The email cost remains at $3.00, so if you want to save a bit, try going with the email subscription and printing it yourself. (If you d like to try the email version next month, send me an email and I ll send you December s as a sample.) Renewals need to be sent to the P.O. Box address on page 2, checks only, made out to Barony of Wastekeep, SCA Inc. Checks can also be given to the Reeve at Baronial Council. Thanks to Ysabella, Baron Arthur and Their Excellencies for contributing articles for this issue, and to Aisling for Canton Minutes and As You Like It Copy. I am still seeking persona pages for future issues, so keep them coming or get started with research to flesh out the story of your persona. Other articles, event chronicles, cover art, etc, are always welcome, along with any suggestions or corrections. 9

Persona Page The Life of Arthur Greene of Deerhurst Arthur was born in Deerhurst, England, on Dec. 3, 1339, about ten miles north of Gloucester during the reign of King Edward. His father, Charles Earl of Hwicce, who was of Saxon decent, was called to serve with the English forces in France at Calais in 1346. He returned home in 1348. His mother, Cathryn, a strong willed Welsh woman, was left in charge of the Manor when her husband went to war. Arthur s older brother was fostered to another family while Arthur and his sister remained at home. The loss of his brother to a fever made his mother fear for the lives of her other children should they be fostered. His father, on his homecoming allowed Arthur s mother to keep him close to home for another year. During this time his father began to see that he a had a talent in woodworking, and by late 1349 his father convinced his mother to allow him to be fostered to the master wood carver, Richard Carver, in Tewkesbury. By the time Arthur was 15, he had surpassed his mentor, and his work was in demand by many wealthy patrons. Arthur traveled south, choosing the kind of jobs that were not only fulfilling, but paid handsomely. After a number of years he had amassed enough wealth to maintain a comfortable style of life. Since many of the commissions were not what he really wanted to do as an artist, at the age of 25 Arthur decided to give up the life of a commissioned artisan and return to Deerhurst, the land of his birth. During this time his sister had married one of his father s knights and had a small daughter. Arthur s parents and brother-in-law had been lost to a fever, leaving his sister alone to care for her small daughter. Arthur returned home to care for them. Because the peasants were now able to demand wages for their labor, Arthur found he could no longer depend on an income from the manor lands and returned to doing commissions to support the family. Arthur raised his niece as his own child and when she became 16 he arranged a marriage to the son of a wealthy merchant. With her child cared for and married, his sister decided to join the sisters at St. Mary s Parish in Deerhurst leaving Arthur without any obligations to fulfill. Arthur found life very trying under the new very young king and decided to take to the traveling life again and be master of his own life. His first trip was to the land of his mother s birth. She had a large family in Wales and Arthur got to know them all. They found many jobs requiring the hands of a talented craftsman. After spending many years with his mother s family he felt a calling to return Deerhurst! After arriving at Deerhurst, he visited his sister and found her very content in her life at the Parish. She had collected several messages asking for his services as a woodworker and his craft continues to keep Arthur busy. 11
