Message from your Chapter Directors Message from Janice: We have been out of commission and we have nothing to report. Your Chapter Directors, Bob & Janice 2
Spring is quickly approaching and as the weather continues to warm up. Many riders are anxious to get the bikes out. Just as many people spend time spring cleaning their house; there are many ways that a person can do spring cleaning for their hobby of motorcycling. As you prepare for the coming riding season there are numerous tasks you should do or consider doing for your safety. First off, update your medical records you carry in your bike. Many of us are a year older and with this change things such as medicines, medical conditions, etc. could have switched. To protect yourself or help people in case of an emergency an update of information is helpful. A second item you should double check is your bike insurance. Many policies vary and many requirements vary from state to state. Twelve states carry no fault insurance which means you better make sure you are aware of what your coverage provides. Since many riders pull a trailer or camper you need to be sure you double check that these are covered on your policy. Remember, you as the driver are responsible for checking your policy. Before riding, a good spring safety check is essential. Use the acronym T-CLOCK to check out your bike. T TIRES AND WHEELS Check out the wear on the tires. Is the tread good? Are the tires bald? It is also a good time to check the air pressure since the bike sat most of the winter. On the wheels check the rims, bearings, and seal. Some riders may have spokes on the wheels that also need checked. C- CONTROLS Check that your cables and hoses are all in working condition. L LIGHTS Check over the condition of the lenses or reflectors. With the extra lighting that many Goldwingers install, a good check of the wiring is important. O OIL Springtime is a good time to check your oil level or change your oil. A check for any leaks is also important. C CHASSIS As you are cleaning your bike to ride or just checking out the bike, now is a good time to check for cracks in the frame. This could also include the steering head bearings, suspension, forks, belt or chain. A little bit of TLC now can eliminate serious problems later. K KICKSTAND Since the kickstand or center stand is what holds up the bike when you quit riding the bike, it s a good idea to give this a good inspection. Besides the condition of the stand also check the retention. Does the kickstand spring into place? Obviously trikes don t have this to worry about. Do you have SPRING FEVER yet to start riding? LINDA S LESSON: Besides checking out the bike, if you haul a trailer or camper, now is a good time to check out your trailer or camper. Check out the lights and wiring. As you are checking out the tongue of the trailer, also check that the bolts are tightened on your hitch. Be sure the hitch holds the trailer properly.
