April is here and we are rapidly heading toward the most extensive boating season ever scheduled for the Lopez Island Yacht Club. The saying Smooth is Fast can be attributed to LIYC s working members. Everything appears smooth as we race toward Opening Day and our 2011 cruising and activity calendar. This year club members will participate in four traditional cruises, five bonus cruises, the clam fest, 4th of July float decorations and parade, a raft up, four catered dinners, eight potlucks and have the opportunity to visit additional reciprocal yacht clubs. Rear Commodore Duane Bordvick and Ze-man Gary Zerbst have put together nine great cruises. Their efforts have involved polling our members, measuring distances, checking previous anchorages, contacting marinas for dock space and restaurants for meals, and the results promise a good time for all. Duane and Gary have also been lining up sail boats for member use during the season. Gary is readying the Lopez Island Family Resource Center s fleet for Opening Day racing on May 7th and Duane has been working with Port Ludlow s Etchel Fleet Captain for unique sailing experiences during that July 22-24th cruise. Staff Commodore Dave Welker has been working with LIYC member Bill Diller and the Lopez Islander Resort staff to provide a smoother reciprocal experience for everyone. The Islander staff will now be logging in reciprocal visitors so we can make a connection with visiting yacht club partners. Club member Bob Hall came up with a number of good ideas to streamline club procedures. One of his ideas moved us quickly through last month s General Membership meeting buffet line. Bob also asked about a half price offer for signing up for BoatUS membership. Newsline Editor Shanley Lett came through with the needed information. Shanley also reminded me about our April 21st Re-tag your Fire Extinguisher Day. This is also an opportunity to meet former Friday Harbor Mayor Bill LaPorte. See the accompanying BoatUS and fire extinguisher articles on pages 3 and 4 of this issue. Continued on Page 4
