President s Message In any organization there are people with hidden talents. We are fortunate to have Jim Train with us. Last month, as Mr. James Russel from Oak Harbor, Ohio, he gave us a peek into 1925. I hope you enjoyed the trip and I hope maybe you learned something about our era. There s more to the Model T era than the Model T. It s nice to know more about the times. Perhaps we can have him back. There s lots to know about the Model T and it s history. Maybe we can give a presentation about something you are interested in. Let me know and I ll see what I can do. In the meantime look for ways to get your car out. Go to cruise nights, join us on tours, or just drive to the market. The cars should be out in the sunshine working for a living like everyone else. This club doesn t have many garage queens or museum pieces. Get your car out and keep it rolling. Sunshine Report Craig French informs us that Richard Perry, the first president of MTFCSD, passed away on March 18 followint a long illness from Parkinsons. He was in an assisted living home in Vista for the past 5 or 6 years. No information on a service has been receied. With a sad heart I must let you know that we have lost another lovely lady in our club. Marie Judd passed away on March 10, 2015. Currently, we don t have any information about a service, ao at the moment, a card to the family would be greatly appreciated. Beverley, Les, Mike & Sam would love a card or call. Probably the best place to send a card would be to: Judd Family 2646 Balboa Vista Drive San Diego, CA 92105 Remember to call me at 949-492-4255 or email me at judynjohn@burrellteam.com when something happens, so I can send out cards or call. We care about all our members in the San Diego Model T Club. Judy Burrell Club Website Be sure to visit the club s website. Pictures of member s cars and car data are requested. The website can be reached at the following address: mtfcsd.com - - - Special to Club Members Only - - - A Members Only portion of the club website is available to members using a special password which will change fom time to time. Three club members have five cars on display which are real beauties. Member at Large: John noted that the El Cajon car show starts on April 26. He also provided dates for upcoming car shows and left brochures for several of them. Other Activities: It was announced that Marie Judd had passed away on March 10. Carlos Royal won the raffle for a free meal at the next general meeting. Program: Greg introduced Mr. James Russell, from Oak Harbor, Ohio, who would speak to us about life in the US in 1925. For the next 15 or 20 minutes Mr. Russell kept us entertained with stories of that period and what was going on. He took several questions with good answers. (Note: Mr Russell is actually James R.Train [who wants to bet that the R stands for Russell] a member of the our club). Marie Howard in 1948 In Memorium Marie Helen Judd August 12, 1930 - March 10, 2015 Maarie was born in Goldfield, Nevada, the daughter of a miner who later became a storekeeper following an accident with blasting caps that left him partitually blinded. The family would regularly visit San Diego every year and finally moved here in 1941 when she was in the 6th grade. While in Jr. High School (Roosevelt) and High School (San Diego High), she played vollyball and basketball. She met Lyle in 1945 while visiting her best school chum, Edie Mae. A sailor in a Model A came around the comer so fast he took the turn on two wheels before parking at Edie Mae s grandma s house on the same block. Marie asked, Who s that fool and Edie Mae replied, That s my cousin, Lyle. Soon they were in love, she 15 and he 20, but Marie s mom, Amelia, made Lyle wait until she turned 18 before they could be married. Marie graduated high school in 1948 (in the same class with Chuck West - although neither was aware of it until many years later). Lyle and Marie were married in early 1949 and had their first child, Michael, the following year, followed by a girl, Beverly, the next year, followed by another son, Sam, the year after that, followed by yet another son, Leslie, about four years later. There was always an interest in old cars and Marie, who liked to sew, used to dress them all in old style clothes for their tours. Sam, noted that even though there were a number of old cars during the years, Marie liked the Model T the best. They had a great 56 years together when Lyle preceeded Marie in death in 2003. Marie will be sorely missed. (Editor e Note: Many thanks to Sam and the Judd family for providing the above informaiton) Upcoming Tours Our Tour Chairman announces the following tours in the upcoming months of April and June: April Tour - Julian Date: Saturday, April 25 Time: 9:00 AM meet 9:30 AM Leave Location: Park and Ride at Descanso Junction on Interstate 8 Destination: Julian for lunch We hopefully will meet members of the Hidden Valley Model T Club in Julian who will be arriving over a different route. Note: We may be in the need of a trouble truck June Tour - Alpine History Day Date: Time: Saturday, June 6 (D Day) TBA This will be a repeat of last year s Alpine History Day Tour and we will most likely be meeting at the Histerical Auto Works in Santee at around 9:00 AM. The Historical Day in Alpine is a yearly event and there is plenty to see at the Western Show. Also, a chuck wagon lunch is available for those who want to eat at the event. Details in the May issue 4
