APPENDIX J: STAGE 1 ARCHAEOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT
A.1 Registered Archaeological Sites Within Three Kilometres of the Study Area A total of 112 sites have been registered within three kilometres of the study area boundaries. These sites span the Late Paleo-Indian period, circa 10,000 BP, to the Euro-Canadian period. The registered sites located within a one kilometre radius of the study boundaries are described briefly below. Particulars concerning all sites within three kilometres of the study area are summarized in Table 1. The Waltham site (AlGs-9) is located approximately one kilometre from the northwest corner of the study area. It is a Middle Iroquoian village site of undetermined size located on the westerly branch of Lynde creek. The West Whitby Townline 28 site (AlGr-15) is a precontact camp consisting of eight lithic artifacts. The Henry Hood site (AlGr-71) is located within 100 metres of the study area boundary close to the intersection of Coronation Street and Taunton Road. It is a Euro-Canadian homestead of undetermined size. AlGr-105 is located north of Kingston Road (Highway 2) and west of Audley Road. It is a precontact isolated find consisting of a single chert scraper. The Lynde site (AlGr-110) is located less than one kilometre from the eastern boundary of the study area, on the south side of Taunton Road, east of Coronation Road. It is a Euro-Canadian homestead that dates circa A.D.1810-1840. Site AlGr-160 is located approximately 200 metres from the eastern boundary of the study area and it is a precontact isolated find consisting of a Levanna-type projectile point that dates to the Late Woodland circa A.D. 800. The Bowerman site (AlGr-161) is located in Lynde Creek less than 200 metres from the eastern boundary of the study area and it is a Euro-Canadian homestead of undetermined size. The McGowan Farm site (AlGr-162) is located just to the south of the Bowerman site in the NW corner of the City of Whitby and is less than 200 metres from the eastern boundary of the study area. It is a Euro-Canadian homestead of undetermined size dating to the early to mid 19 th century. The Lynde House site (AlGr-42) is located less than 200 metres from the boundary towards the south eastern edge of the study area. It is a Euro-Canadian homestead. Site AlGr-46 is located less than 100 metres from the study boundary at the south-western edge of the study area. It is a pre-contact isolated find. September 2009 planningalliance 2

It should be noted, however, that not all features of interest were mapped systematically in the Ontario series of historical atlases, given that they were financed by subscription, and subscribers were given preference with regard to the level of detail provided on the maps. Moreover, not every feature of interest would have been within the scope of the atlas at the time of its compilation. Nevertheless, the atlas identifies the general locations of over 50 19 th -century farmstead complexes, as well as several saw and grist mills, and a church.
