GREENERY CARE AND OTHER INFO Trees Measure the space where you want to put your tree. Choose a tree that fits the space and has a healthy, green appearance without a large number of dead or browning needles. When buying a pre-cut tree the needles should not be dried up, the branches should not be brittle and the outer needles should not fall off if the tree is gently shaken. The base of the tree should be straight and 6-8 inches long. Needle shedding is a natural part of the tree life-cycle. Keep your tree container topped up with warm plain water every day to reduce shedding. Take the tree down before it dries out. Choose a cool, dry spot for your tree away from heat sources such as TVs, fireplaces, radiators and air ducts. If you plan to plant your tree after you use it, keep the root balled tree damp until you are ready to pot the tree and then put the tree in moist soil. Holiday Light Safety Check all lights for worn electrical cords. Use UL-approved electrical decorations and cords. Unplug tree lights at night. Tree Recycling Many communities will pick up trees and turn them into chips. Another option is to put the tree on your property and place bread and suet among the branches for the birds. For more information about Loudoun County Tree Recycling Services, visit Loudoun.gov/TreeRecycling or call 0--554. Poinsettias Selection and Care Choose a plant with dark green foliage down to the soil line. Plant should be.5 times taller than the diameter of the pot, and aphid-free. Place it in a sunny spot. Water thoroughly when soil is dry to the touch and discard excess water. Keep daytime temperatures between 60-0 degrees and at or above 55 degrees at night.
