Your new Neighbourhood Coordinator Nicola Wheeler is your new Havelock Neighbourhood Coordinator. Her job is to work with people who live on Havelock and those who provide services to the local community (like Ealing Council, Catalyst, the NHS and others) to improve life for everyone on Havelock. Find out more on page 3. 3

Regeneration news What has happened and what you will see in the next three months Building the first new homes: our contractor Bouygues UK have finished digging the foundations for the first new homes and are busy building them. If you look over towards the building site, you ll see the concrete frame for the two blocks of flats rising at the rate of one floor every two weeks or so. When completed, they will be six floors high. As we explained in the newsletter that we sent out to you all in November, these new flats are built using concrete, so most of the lorries coming to the site between now and the end of February will be concrete mixers. Drainage: this has been laid for the new homes within the site and Bouygues UK are now working on the drainage in Hillary Road. The drainage work happening in Hillary Road will serve both the new and the retained properties but due to the size of the sewer it s meant that we had to close part of Hillary Road. This has meant that the bus has been unable to go around the estate and had to be temporarily diverted to Havelock Road. We now have a new route along Gregory Road which we hope reduces the distance you have to travel to the nearest bus stop. Thanks for bearing with us while these works are underway. Look out for our posters We will be putting up new posters around Havelock on local shop windows and stairwells, which will keep you informed of any construction updates or community events around Havelock. Tarmac road: this has been laid within the construction site to maintain access throughout winter. This will also reduce the amount of mud created around the site and the estate. Construction site office: the Bouygues UK construction team is getting bigger as more people join the building work, so they have a larger new office on Havelock Road. One of the Bouygues UK team working in the new office is Havelock resident Mohammed Farah read his story on page three. Relocated pedestrian entrance to Maypole Dock opens: the relocated pedestrian gate is located at the rear of the Hillary Road flats nearest the dock. It s secure and for residents of Maypole Dock only. Cranes: we aren t anticipating any more large cranes on site until we start work on Phase 1B later this year. Buying the homes of home owners and landlords: if you are a home owner or a landlord on Phase 1B, the London Borough of Ealing may have contacted you to arrange a valuation of your home. If you have not been contacted or if you have any queries regarding selling your property on Phase 1, please call Ayla Hassan on tel: 020 8825 7140. 2

LIFE ON HAVELOCK and I know what a difference we can make when we work together. As Havelock Neighbourhood Coordinator, Nicola s job will be to work closely with Havelock residents to make sure that the regeneration of their homes also brings real benefits to them. Nicola explains: I will be a link between Havelock residents and the agencies that provide services to them for example, Ealing Council, Catalyst, other housing associations, the NHS, those who run services for young people, and local faith groups. My job will be to make sure that these organisations, and others working in the area, meet the needs of Havelock s residents. Introducing Nicola Wheeler your Neighbourhood Coordinator I m really excited about this job, says Nicola Wheeler, our new Havelock Neighbourhood Coordinator. I have worked with local communities for many years To do that, I will regularly meet residents and in particular the residents steering group and HIRO. I attended the residents steering group meeting on 21st January and it was very useful to meet residents for the first time. I am planning a series of engagement events over the next few months to speak to more people about what they love about Havelock and how they think things can be improved. You can also find me in the Catalyst office on Hunt Road on Tuesdays so feel free to pop in and say hello. Look out for a regular update from Nicola in every newsletter. Site safety goes SPLAAT! As part of the regeneration s commitment to engage with local schools around Havelock, Community Engagement Manager for Bouygues UK, Vicky Barker, was at Three Bridges Primary School to teach pupils about safe play near construction sites; delivering two interactive SPLAAT (Safe Play At All Times) presentations to 275 pupils across key stages 1 and 2. The pupils were shown slides of possible hazards on a building site and were told to avoid playing on any site at any time. The pupils also had fun trying on the PPE (personal protective equipment) worn by construction site workers. At the end of the presentation pupils took part in a drawing competition on SPLAAT near a building site and the winners, Aaron (key stage 1) and Harsimran (key stage 2), were presented with book vouchers. The winners drawings will be blown up to A1 size and displayed on the Catalyst community hoarding around the Phase 1A site. 35

Meet Mohammed Farah, Havelock resident Mohammed Farah, a resident of Havelock for nearly 20 years, talks about his new role at Bouygues UK as Document Handler and Site Secretary, and how excited he is to be part of his area s regeneration. How did you hear about the role and what was the recruitment process like? I heard about the role through Angela at Bouygues UK who was at the Heathrow Academy Jobs Fair in November. Within a week they d arranged an interview and an IT test. I then had a week s work trial and after I passed that, I officially started on 4th January. How did you find your first week at Bouygues UK? A lot of people helped out on my trial and I learnt a lot in that week. There s 10 of us in the team so it s a very close, tight unit who support one another. There s always somebody available to help you out particularly for someone that s new like me. It s been very easy to settle in. What do you enjoy about your role? The most important thing is when I go to the site, I know that this will be where I m going to live. It s exciting knowing that I m part of the project and the regeneration program. And I m doing a lot of admin that is good for future jobs. It s busy, challenging and fun. But the thing that keeps on motivating me is that I can t wait for the end result, having lived here for so long I want to see my area given a facelift. What advice would you give to other Havelock residents who are looking for work? Go to the right people and narrow it down to what you want, l was looking for a job for about five years and I didn t know specifically what I wanted, it was all over the place. And I just spent more time with Kowsar and Hibo [at Catalyst Gateway] they helped me with my CV and through them I found out about Fun fact! When he was a teenager, Mohammed played football with his namesake and future Olympic athlete Mo Farah! the Job Fair, so they ve been very helpful. If it wasn t for them I wouldn t have got this job. And it s determination and patience. If you really want something you can achieve it. Resident digs for Havelock Havelock resident Lakhvi Sidhu Singh, 28, has successfully taken part in a Bouygues UK work placement on site working with sub-contractors, Darby. Lakhvi found out about the placement through the Build Havelock careers day while searching for an opportunity within construction. He was then soon contacted with an offer of work experience as a 360 machine operator (another term for digger or excavator operator). Lakhvi said about the placement: After gaining a CSCS card for a 360 driver I was unable to secure employment due to inexperience. I am very happy to have been given this opportunity as it will enable me to secure permanent work and especially as my home overlooks the site. 46

Job opportunities and other support for residents The London Borough of Ealing, Catalyst and our contractor, Bouygues UK, are committed to making jobs on the regeneration project and in the local area, available to Havelock residents. These are some of the opportunities currently available: Heathrow Airport had approximately 100 vacancies to fill including great opportunities to work in hospitality, retail and customer services with full training provided. The Heathrow Academy Community Engagement Team have done great work so far in supporting Catalyst to get Havelock residents into training or jobs, attending resident recruitment events on local estates. Local residents also expressed how much they liked the recruitment event in November. One resident, Senait, who has struggled to find consistent work, and was the first to complete the course and work at Heathrow said: I feel empowered and look forward to moving up the career ladder. Catalyst will be holding another jobs fair in March with constructors Higgins and Bouygues UK. For more information contact Hibo on hibo.hirey@chg.org.uk or 020 88323238. Residents fly high with Heathrow Academy Catalyst and The Heathrow Academy Community Engagement Team have jointly assisted local residents to access opportunities and job vacancies at Heathrow. Since November three Havelock residents and three Catalyst tenants from the local area have secured employment and to date six Havelock residents have successfully completed a course, following the Heathrow Academy recruitment event in November 2015. Jobs on Havelock There will be many apprenticeships and job opportunities coming up at Havelock as the construction work continues. Please look out for adverts on the Bouygues UK office window and in the window of the Catalyst shop on Hunt Road. Job opportunities are also advertised in local Job Centres and through other local employment providers. For more information about current and upcoming opportunities, please contact Angela on angela.asforis@bouygues-uk.com or tel: 07810 855 309. Are you interested in applying for any of our opportunities, but not sure if you re job ready or have the necessary skills or experience? Then get in contact with our employment and skills team at Catalyst. They will be able to support you in applying for any opportunities that come up and can help you to write your application and improve your CV and interview skills, as well as look for training to improve your employability skills.
