TRADITIONAL DAY CAMPS Wee Backpackers Camp June 10 August 30* Start your child s appreciation of the great outdoors by enrolling him or her in Wee Backpackers! From the moment campers arrive each day, counselors guide them through traditional camp experiences including hiking, nature study, swimming, group games, and arts and crafts. They have opportunities to sing songs, tell stories, and meet new friends. All activities are geared to show your preschool camper the wonders of nature. Wee Backpackers is carried out in small groups under the watchful eye of counselors trained to meet the needs of young campers. The Wee Backpacker program maintains a low staff to child ratio. Traditional Entering grades 1 6 in fall, 2019 June 10 August 30* *No program July 4-5, fee prorated Member Participants: $225/week Non-Member Program Participants: $250/week Campers explore hiking through wooded trails, studying the wonders of nature, canoeing along lake shores, and conquering many challenges under the leadership of well-trained staff. Adventures will include themed arts and crafts, a mystical quest and a special tea party! Pirate Camp Weeks of June 24, July 22 and August 12 Weeks of June 24, July 22 and August 12 Arrrrrgh! Young Buccaneers learn the swashbuckling lingo of pirates, play games like Capture the Pirate Flag, try their balancing skills as they walk the plank, go on treasure hunts and a whole lot more! There are many tales surrounding Kici Yapi. Campers will set out on a daily adventure to hunt for clues, set traps and have fun with the mysteries. OUTDOOR SPORTS Fishing Camp Weeks of June 10, June 17, June 24, July 8, July 15, July 22, July 29, August 5, August 12 and August 19 Kids get hooked on fishing as they learn basic fishing skills. Lakes provide the scene for fishing fun using the catch-andrelease method. Campers can bring their own pole and tackle, or equipment will be provided. Climbing Camp Weeks of June 17, June 24, July 15 and July 22 Campers embark on a climbing adventure! Campers will gain new skills and self-confidence every day through a variety of climbing activities. Campers test their strength, strategy, and skill while learning safety procedures, belay techniques, knot tying and proper climbing techniques. Extreme Adventure Weeks of June 10, June 17, June 24, July 8, July 15, July 22, July 29, August 5 and August 12 Member Participants: $300/week Non-Member Program Participants: $325/week Kids looking for some radical new experiences this summer can kick it up a notch with a week packed with fun team building experiences. This camp is designed to build self-confidence and teach valuable skills through challenging activities while enjoying an unforgettable adventure. The remainder of the day will be spent enjoying traditional camp activities. Campers will spend three days traveling outside of camp to the Southdale YMCA Skate Park, Taylors Falls and Camp Streefland High Ropes Course. The remaining two days will be spent at camp enjoying traditional camp activities. The day of Taylors Falls, campers will return to the Southdale YMCA at 5 p.m. NATURE AND SCIENCE Fish, Frogs and Forts Camp Weeks of June 10, June 17, June 24, July 8, July 15, July 22, July 29, August 5, August 12, August 19 Filled with exploration and environmental education, we ll focus on fort building and discovery of insects, fish and frogs. Campers learn basic fishing skills while practicing the catch-and-release method. Bait and fishing equipment is provided at camp but you may bring your own. Junior Ranger Camp Weeks of June 24, July 15 and July 22 Member Participants: $255/week Non-Member Program Participants: $280/week The YMCA and National Park Service have partnered together to empower youth to create new outdoor opportunities to play, learn and serve. Campers will earn their Junior Ranger badge and experience firsthand the Junior Ranger motto of Explore, Learn and Protect. Campers will experience a field trip to a National Park to explore the Mississippi River and work with a Park Ranger! Outdoor Living Skills Camp Weeks of June 10 - August 23 Member Participants: $255/week Non-Member Program Participants: $280/week Kids develop their outdoor living skills in this exciting, hands-on specialty camp! Campers discover the finer points of preparing for a big outdoor adventure. Participants will learn a variety of useful camping skills that may include building a fire, making camp shelters, knot tying, campfire cooking and more! WATER EXPLORATION Wee Backpackers Learn to Swim Camp 4 & 5 years old, or entering Kindergarten in fall, 2019 Weeks of June 10, June 17, June 24, July 8, July 15, July 22, July 29 and August 5 Member Participants: $270/week Non-Member Program Participants: $295/week All of the wonderful outdoor adventures in the Wee Backpacker program plus swimming lessons! Each day Wee Bees will have a 40-minute progressive swimming lesson with certified swim instructors. Little swimmers will also have time to play water games. The remainder of the day will be spent enjoying traditional camp activities. Sailing Camp Weeks of June 24, July 15 and August 5 Member Participants: $330/week Non-Member Program Participants: $355/week Sailing is a life-long sport teaching teamwork and an appreciation for the outdoors. Participants will spend 3 full days of excitement and exploration on the water. The other 2 days will be spent at Camp Kici Yapi doing traditional camp activities. Sailing Instructors are US Sailing Certified, highly experienced and energetic and teach basic sailing concepts including: wind identification, upwind sailing, navigation and water safety. Participants will begin on land and then sail Lake Minnetonka. Sailors work in teams to manage onboard jobs including rigging, sail trim and steering. Participants must bring: water bottle, change of clothes, water shoes and towel. Lifejackets will be provided by camp. Transportation from Camp Kici Yapi to Lake Minnetonka will be provided on the 3 days of sailing. HORSE CAMPS Come experience the joys of horseback riding at Horse Camp! Kici Yapi riding programs are progressively structured to provide campers with a fun experience of interacting with gentle horses. Instructors are trained in horsemanship and carefully match the experience level of the child with an appropriate horse. Safety is our top priority at Horse Camp. For all horse programs, we recommend that participants wear heeled leather shoes or boots. Long pants and protective helmets are required of all participants. Helmets will be provided by the camp. Our horse camp is a progressive recreational riding program and is not intended to replace formal riding lessons. Alternative programs may be planned if weather conditions such as extreme heat, rain or wind jeopardize the safety of campers or horses. FAMILY ADVENTURE DAYS Whether you are a current camp family, are interested in learning more about camp or are just looking for a morning of family fun, we have something for everyone! Enjoy a Saturday morning at one of our s for Family Adventure Days. Possible Activities: Family Scavenger Hunt Climbing Canoeing Arts & Crafts Outdoor Games New! Li l Pardners Introductory Level Entering grades 1-3 in fall, 2019 Weeks of June 17, June 24, July 8, July 15, July 22, July 29, August 5 and August 12 This specialty camp will have kids saying Howdy with a big grin. They ll giddy-up for a pony ride and learn about horses and the barn. Campers will enjoy horse and traditional activities throughout the week. Campers will spend three hours at the barn throughout the week. Colts Introductory Level Entering grades 2 6 in fall, 2019 Weeks of June 10 August 30* Member Participants: $330/week Non-Member Program Participants: $355/week Colts is a one-hour-per-day introductory program for campers with little or no experience around horses. Riders will build confidence and skills while learning the basics of western horseback riding. Instruction includes safety, leading, mounting, dismounting, reining, and basic trail riding. The remainder of the day is spent in traditional camp activities. Wranglers Advanced Level Weeks of June 10 August 30* Member Participants: $360/session Non-Member Program Participants: $385/session In Wranglers, experienced riders spend ten hours per week in advanced riding instruction including mounting, trotting, and ring work. Riders also learn about proper horse care such as feeding, grooming, and saddling. Wrangler riders will also have the opportunity to enjoy scenic trail rides. Circle Y Camp 2-Week Session, Advanced Level Two Week Sessions: June 10-21, July 1-12* and August 5-16 Member Participants: $675/session Non-Member Program Participants: $700/session In Circle Y Camp, experienced riders spend ten hours per week in advanced riding instruction including mounting, trotting and ring work. Riders also learn about proper horse care such as feedi ng, grooming, and saddling. Circle Y riders will enjoy scenic trail rides. They will also showcase their skills in a special horse show during Family night on the Thursday evening of the 2 nd week of session. See page 18. TEENS AND LEADERSHIP Teen specialty campers spend a portion of each day in their specialized activity. The remainder of the day is spent enjoying Traditional Camp activities. Samples of a typical day can be found at Teen Archery Camp Weeks of July 22 and August 19 Member Participants: $270/week Non-Member Program Participants: $295/week Fine tune your archery skills and learn new ones. Archery games will help you discover the science behind drawing and releasing the bow. Instructors will show you proper grip, stance and aim alignment. Equipment will be provided. Campers will go on a field trip to a local archery range. Teen Water Adventure Camp Weeks of June 24, July 15 and August 5 Spend a full week enjoying an awesome array of water activities including canoeing, kayaking, swimming, boating and more! One day will be spent sailing at Lake Minnetonka. Another day campers will go paddleboarding on a local lake. Teen Climbing Camp Weeks of June 10 and July 8 Test your strategy and skill through new fun challenges! Each day focuses on a new element or challenge including knot tying, safety and team work. This camp is designed to build self-confidence and teach valuable skills while enjoying unforgettable adventure. Includes a field trip to Vertical Endeavors. On Wednesdays, campers will participate in an exciting full day rock climbing experience at Taylor s Falls State Park! Teen Service Learning Camp Weeks of June 17, July 29 and August 12 Grow your leadership and teambuilding skills, while bolstering self-confidence through giving back to the community. Earn volunteer hours and improve your skill set while actively participating in traditional camp activities like swimming, canoeing and kayaking, and high ropes course. Service projects take place at camp and in the community. You will receive a certificate with the number of service hours completed. It s a win-win for you and the community! Teen Horse Camp Weeks of June 24 and July 29 Member Participants: $345/session Non-Member Program Participants: $370/session Build confidence as you develop horsemanship skills. Trained instructors will teach the basics of western horseback riding. You will work on leading, mounting, ring work, grooming, trotting and saddling, and enjoy trail rides. Leaders-in-Training Camp Two Week Sessions: June 10-21, June 24 - July 3*, July 8-19, July 22 - August 2, August 5-16, August 19-30 Member Participants: $350/two-week session Non-Member Program Participants: $375/two-week session Rise to the challenge in Leaders-in-Training Camp and discover your leadership qualities. You will learn and develop the necessary camp skills needed to lead camper activities, as well as group responsibility through activity planning. You will have opportunities to shadow counselors and assist staff in camp activities. There will be plenty of time to hang out with friends new and old. Come experience camp from a whole new perspective! Teen Circle Y Camp Entering grades 7-9 in fall, 2019 Two Week Session: July 15-26 Member Participants: $675/two-week session Non-Member Program Participants: $700/two-week session In Circle Y Camp, experienced riders spend ten hours per week in advanced riding instruction including mounting, trotting and ring work. You will also learn about proper horse care such as feeding, grooming and saddling. They will showcase their skills in a horse show during Family Night on Thursday evening of the second week. Jr. Counselor Program Volunteer Program Ages 14 17 Do you love working with kids in a camp setting? Here s your chance to take a leadership role! Junior Counselors are assigned to a group and assist the Senior Counselors in leading and carrying out a variety of programs. Junior Counselors help campers acquire feelings of high self-esteem, self-worth and competence in an outdoor setting. Previous experience in the LIT program or working with children is required. Candidates will be selected through an application and interview process. This is a volunteer position. PEAK ADVENTURE CAMP Discover camp s wild side! Participants enjoy 2 nights and 3 days of the great outdoors during Peak Adventure Camp. These camps promise unlimited fun. Sign up for one or all four. Lanesboro Biking & Cave Tour Offered June 25-27, July 30 - August 1 This adventure begins at Mystery Cave State Park near Lanesboro, where we ll set up camp. Then we go underground to an exciting guided cave tour at one of the nation s most unique caves. We ll spend the next day renting bikes and exploring the historic town of Lanesboro and the trails and parks along the Root River. Trollhaugen Zip Line & Aerial Adventure Offered July 9-11 This adventure will take you soaring! Beautiful Interstate Park is our campsite for one night. We ll enjoy the park s rolling, wooded hills and the banks of the St. Croix River, and spend a half-day at Trollhaugen Adventures soaring through the Aerial Tour Challenge Course. Then experience a night sleeping at YMCA Camp Icaghowan. We will canoe and participate in camp activities. Truly a memory-making getaway. Wisconsin Dells Outdoor Adventure Offered July 16-18 Member Participants: $365/3-day session Non-Member Program Participants: $390/3-day session Fully experience the great outdoors. Tent camp for two nights with us at Devils Lake State Park in Baraboo, WI. On Tuesday we leave Southdale YMCA for Devils Lake State Park. Once camp is set up, the adventures begin! Wednesday is spent at a water park in WI Dells. We ll explore the park and enjoy group games, hike and end with a blazing campfire and a hearty meal. Join us for this thrilling outdoor adventure! North Shore Kayak & Adventure Park Offered June 18 20 and July 23 25 The starting point for this North Shore adventure is the spectacular harbor city of Duluth. There are so many fun things to see and do there. We ll spend two nights camping at Spirit Mountain Campground. Our first day adventures include the Spirit Mountain Adventure Park and exploring Gooseberry Falls. On Wednesday we will spend the day on a guided kayak tour to local islands. This is a trip you don t want to miss! Fee: $40 per week TRANSPORTATION The YMCA provides safe and reliable transportation each day for our campers to begin their adventure! Transportation is provided by YMCA-owned vans, leased vans, and busses. All drivers have completed special training. Transportation is provided to and from camp. Convenient locations have been selected in your neighborhood. Please select only one bus stop during registration. Individuals picking up campers must have a photo ID and be listed on the Authorized Pick-up list. Please contact camp to make changes prior to noon on the day of the change.
