Message from the Bishop ENGLISH OFFICE OF THE BISHOP 13280 CHAPMAN AVENUE, GARDEN GROVE, CA 92840 Dear brothers and sisters in the Lord, As I write this letter today I am looking out of my office window here at Christ Cathedral and can see visitors to our campus who come from not only around the United States but many parts of the world. It is not unusual to meet folks from Mexico, China, and the Philippines in the same day! Folks from all over meet and make connections here, which I believe are providential gifts of God for us all. And, this not only happens here, but in many of our parishes with the many of our visitors who come here and seek out a place for Sunday and Holy Day Masses. My seminary Rector, Fr. Art Trapp, CM, (who was from Oxnard) of Kenrick Seminary in St. Louis, used to speak of connections as collisions of history where people s personal lives and history would connect and become intertwined for a while, and then go on their own ways having been changed, enriched and strengthened by their meetings: another way to say that encounters and connections in Faith result is us being sent forth in mission strengthened and renewed in our Faith and purpose! I wish to welcome all of you personally here at our Diocesan Ministries Celebration (DMC) gathering again this year, and pray that the reprise of last year s theme of Encounter, Connect, Evangelize which reflects all of our planning reflections and efforts here in our Diocese, will become the central theme of your lives and mission in these days and beyond. DeLorenzo, Ph.D., is a faculty member of the McGrath Institute for Church Life and teaches theology at the University of Notre Dame. He oversees undergraduate studies for the Institute and serves as the academic director for Notre Dame Vision, among other responsibilities. He is co-editor of a volume dedicated to Pope Francis on Dante, Mercy, and the Beauty of the Human Person (Cascade, 2018) and the author of three books to date: What Matters Most: Empowering Young Catholics for Life s Big Decisions (Ave Maria, 2018), Work of Love: A Theological Reconstruction of the Communion of Saints (University of Notre Dame Press, 2018), and Witness: Learning to Tell the Stories of Grace that Illumine Our Lives (Ave Maria, 2016). Workshop B 11:15am - 12:30pm B-3249 BRINGING HOPE TO A WORLD IN NEED In this workshop we will explore concrete ways to continue the mission of Christ as missionary disciple who transmit the Good News and strive to be the light of the world and salt of the earth. We will also share the work of Catholic Relief Services (CRS) and what it does on behalf of US Catholics and how you too can bring hope to a world in need. Linda Arreola, M.A., a native of San Diego, has worked with the Diocese of San Diego in the Office for Social Ministry where she oversaw issues related to immigration, human trafficking, culture of life ministry, global solidarity, mental health ministry and outreach to the Spanish speaking community. She also serves as a Master Catechist and as an Instructor in the Diocesan Institute for adult faith formation and is a member of the Programa Misionero de San Diego. B-3250 THE FAMILY: SEEDBED OF VOCATIONS AND A SCHOOL OF DISCIPLESHIP Parents are called to educate their children for life, so that each child may come to know their God-given role and vocation. In his apostolic exhortation, Familiaris Consortio, Saint John Paul II refers to the family living a life a faith and service as "the primary and most excellent seedbed of vocations to a life of consecration to the kingdom of God". In this session, we discuss the importance of the family in formation of disciples. Michael Donaldson, M.T.S. is the Parish Development Director at Blessed Oscar Romero Parish in Eastvale, CA in the Diocese of San Bernardino. He previously served as the Director of Pastoral Care for Families in All Stages for the Diocese of Orange, overseeing a variety of family ministries including marriage preparation and enrichment, divorce ministry, bereavement, caregiving, and mental health. Michael obtained his Bachelor of Arts Degrees in Spanish from Cal State University Fullerton and completed his Master of Theological Studies from the University of Dallas. He has been married to his wife, Audrey for over 15 years. They have 4 children. B-3251 RCIA FIRST STEP: MODELING THE RITE OF ACCEPTANCE Admission into the catechumenate begins with a liturgical rite. How can this rite authentically show the desire and intention who wish to become members and in turn show the Church s acceptance through ritual language and prayer. Come experience this ritual and an unpacking of the encounter. Lesa Truxaw, M.A., is the Director for the Office for Worship for the Diocese of Orange where she has served since 2002. Prior to that time, she was on staff at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Huntington Beach for over eight years. She received her Master s degree in Pastoral Liturgy from Santa Clara University. B-3252 CONNECTING CHILDREN TO PRAYER EXPERIENCES A brief synopsis of the catechesis of prayer will be presented. Then ways to lead children in prayer will be explored. Pope Francis stressed the importance of teaching children how to show love for God through prayer. It is beautiful when mothers teach their little children to blow a kiss to Jesus or to Our Lady. What tenderness there is in this! he said. In that moment the child's heart is transformed into a place of prayer. And this is a gift of the Holy Spirit. Marie Slaton, M.A., began her ministry in education in 1967 at St. Bonaventure School in Cincinnati, Ohio. Since then she has taught grade school, high school, and college classes. She has served as a national speaker as a Certified Activity Consultant. She is a graduate of the Bible Institute and is a Master Catechist. She has twice been a presenter at the National Youth Ministry Conference. Her ministry is to pass on the faith in creative ways that energize both students and their catechist. Practical materials are a component of her presentation. Participants should come to class prepared to participate in the ideas demonstrated. Workshop B 11:15am - 12:30pm ENGLISH B-3253 REVIVING COMMUNITIES OF FAITH WITH STORIES OF GRACE How can we breathe new life into our communities of faith? As we know, being around other people is not the same thing as community. In fact, as one popular scholar has put it, most of modern lives are really more about being alone together. In this session, we will learn how the practice of sharing stories of grace fosters real community around Jesus Christ. Even more, we will learn how to help others craft these faith stories. This is essential for parish communities, school communities, and even families. Stories of grace prepare us better for Eucharistic fellowship with the Lord who feeds us with his presence, and as Dorothy Day once memorably said, We know Him in the breaking of bread, and we know each other in the breaking of bread, and we are not alone anymore." In this workshop, you will learn how to set up and run a faith formation class modified for persons with special needs. Together we will enter into the world of disability and participate as students in a live special needs class. The format is interactive and open to questions. The methods we will learn will also benefit catechists and teachers who run a typical class. Everybody is welcome! The Special Needs Advisory Circle (SNAC) has built a coalition of social and spiritual support within our faith community to help parishes and families with special needs to grow in holiness to love and serve our Lord. C-3256 YES, IN MY BACK YARD! - RESPONDING TO HOMELESSNESS IN ORANGE COUNTY In his visit to the United States in 2015, Pope Francis said forcefully: "We can find no social or moral justification, no justification, no justification whatsoever, for lack of housing." We have a crisis in housing and homelessness in Orange County, but there are solutions. We will highlight our Gospel call to serve the human person and to extend radical hospitality. We will also discuss what it means to remember the "two feet of love in action": charity and justice. Dr. Greg Walgenbach is Director of Life, Justice, and Peace for the Diocese of Orange. He has over 20 years of ministry experience, on college campuses, youth and young adult ministry, and pastoral ministry. He served as a Baptist pastor and Anglican priest before coming into the Catholic Church with his wife and four children. Greg has a MDiv and PhD in Theology from Fuller Theological Seminary. Workshop C 1:45pm - 3:00pm ENGLISH C-3259 THE GREAT THANKSGIVING PRAYER: IT IS JUST AND RIGHT! As full, conscious and active participants in the liturgy, the assembly is called to pray with the ordained minister in the Great Thanksgiving Prayer during the Liturgy of the Eucharist. This workshop will help the assembly connect and engage more fully in the nine separate parts of the Eucharistic Prayer celebrated in our Mass. Once understanding what we are doing during this prayer, the community will be able to sing with more intention the Great Amen! Rick Goodwin has served in parish ministry as Adult Director of Religious Education, and the Catechumenate. He is a past instructor for the Biblical Institute at Los Angeles. As a team member of the North American Forum on the Catechumenate, he traveled the country sharing the wisdom of the RCIA of how it enriches the life of the parish. He is a well-known faculty member of the Institute for Pastoral Ministry in the Diocese of Orange. He currently teaches Theology at Servite High School, Anaheim. Dr. Anne Herrick is a theology teacher at Mater Dei High School, a part-time professor at LMU and offers workshops locally and nationally. Anne is the co-author of The Church: Christ in the World Today Teacher Manual (2011) and Catholic Social Teaching: Christian Life in Society Teacher Manual (2012). Anne earned a doctorate degree from Loyola Marymount University in Educational Leadership for Social Justice. This workshop will take a look at the Pope's new exhortation GAUDETE ET EXSULTATE or REJOICE AND BE GLAD and see how it can be applied in practical ways to our ministry and to our lives. Lisa J. Nollette is a retreat leader, teacher, liturgist, chaplain and religious educator. She has worked in parish, school and hospital settings. She is an instructor for the Diaconate Formation programs and for the Diocese of Orange Formation Programs. She has completed the Advanced Pastoral Liturgy and Pastoral Care Certificates at LMU and recently completed a Holocaust Studies Program at Georgetown University. Ideas for utilizing active learning, media, technology, and activities in the delivery of Catholic social teaching curriculum will be delivered. Dr. Anne Herrick see bio in workshop C-3260 ENGLISH D-3267 FROM CONNECTION TO COMMUNION: FOLLOWING CHRIST IN A DIGITAL AGE In our world of iphones and wifi, our gadgets promise us that we will always be connected. However, the promise of Jesus offers us more than a superficial connection but a deeper communion. He offers us a relationship where we can know him and be known. In this workshop we will explore questions like: What does spending quality time with people have to do with building the kingdom of God? What is Christian about conversation? How can we learn to be together as communities that foster discipleship? And many more. Annette Venegas, MDiv is the Ministry Coordinator to the Office of Parish Faith Formation in the Diocese of Orange has been ministering with this department for the last 6 years. She has a BA in Literatures in English from University of California, San Diego and a Master of Divinity from Harvard Divinity School. She is interested in finding new ways to share the richness of the spiritual tradition of the church. Most recently she has worked in the area of evangelization and has been involved in offering the Called and Gifted workshops for the discernment of charisms. No es inusual encontrarnos personas de México, China, y Filipinas en un solo día! Personas de todas partes se encuentran y hacen conexiones aquí, las cuales yo creo que son regalos providenciales de Dios para todos nosotros. Y esto no solo pasa aquí, sino en muchas de nuestras parroquias con los muchos visitantes que vienen aquí e indagan sobre un lugar para asistir a la misa del día domingo y/o días festivos. El Padre Art Trapp, CM, Rector del Seminario Kenrick en San Louis donde yo estudié, (quien era de Oxnard) solía referirse a las conexiones como choques de historia donde la vida y la historia de las personas podrían conectarse y entrelazarse por un tiempo para luego cada uno continuar su camino habiendo sido cambiado, enriquecido y fortalecido por aquellos encuentros: otra forma de decir que el resultado de encuentros y conexiones en Fe para nosotros es ser enviados en misión fortalecidos y renovados en nuestra Fe y propósito. Taller C 1:45pm - 3:00pm C-3271 LA FORMACIÓN INTEGRAL DE LOS MINISTROS En este taller vamos a ofrecer algunas ideas que nos ayuden a los catequistas y todos los ministros a entender la importancia del cuidado de la salud física, psicológica y espiritual como parte de nuestra voción de servicio en la sociedad y en la Iglesia. Dr. José Antonio Medina obtuvo su doctorado en teología por la Universidad Pontificia de Salamanca en España. Es profesor en diversos Institutos de formación superior de California y Nevada. Ha escrito varios libros entre los que destacan "Diálogos Semanales con Jesús" "Temas calientes para jóvenes cristainos" "Vivir el presente, imaginar el futuro", "Con el corazón lleno de alegría", entre otros. Actualmente es consultor para la Conferencia de Obispos de California y Director de la Oficina de la Formación Continua de los Sacerdotes de la Diócesis de San Bernardino. C-3272 FUI FORASTERO Y ME RECIBISTE (MT. 25:35) El Papa Francisco, ante la crisis migratoria más grande en toda la historia de la humanidad, exhorta: No hay que construir muros sino puentes. No hay que cerrar las puertas sino abrirlas. Este llamado especial a la Iglesia y a toda persona de buena voluntad ha sido concretizado por el Papa Francisco con el reciente lanzamiento de la Compañía Migratoria Mundial, un proceso eclesial e internacional de concientización, educación y acción concreta a nivel parroquial, comunitario e individual. Ven a este taller y aprende sobre las dimensiones globales de la crisis migratoria y el tráfico humano y como la Iglesia está respondiendo en concreto. Compartiremos también recomendaciones que pueden ayudar a nivel personal. Maria G. Arroyo, M.A., actualmente trabaja con Catholic Relief Services educando sobre la solidaridad global. Maria es instructora con el IPM de la Diócesis de Orange y es también Directora Espiritual. Maria cuenta con una Maestría en Estudios Teológicos de la Universidad de Loyola Marymount. Ha pasado tiempo sirviendo en comunidades en la India, África, Latino América y Asia. Más recientemente vivió en México acompañando a las comunidades indígenas en los altos de Chiapas. C-3273 EL MINISTERIO: OBRA DE UN ENCUENTRO PERSONAL CON EL ESPÍRITU SANTO El ministerio en la Iglesia comienza con ese "primer Pentecostés" donde el discípulo comprende su llamado en Cristo y su vocación bautismal. El ministerio y todo lo que hacemos por la evangelización y la catequesis es, a partir de ese encuentro, una obra del Espíritu Santo. En este taller veremos las consecuencias prácticas que este encuentro tiene para nuestra vida y nuestra práctica del ministerio en la Iglesia. ESPAÑOL José Luis Elias, M.A., es un ministro eclesial laico que sirve a la Iglesia en la Diócesis de San Bernardino como Director de Educación y Programas de Formación en el Departamento de Vida, Dignidad y Justicia. Gran parte de su vida la ha dedicado a la evangelización y a la formación de los laicos, sobre todo en su etapa como coordinador y director de formación en el Instituto de Formación para los Ministerios de la Diócesis de San Bernardino. José Luis posee una Maestría en Teología y actualmente cursa el Doctorado en Ministerio en la Universidad Barry de Miami. Estamos llamados a ser personas-cántaros para dar de beber a los demás. Taller C 1:45pm - 3:00pm C-3274 LA ACEPTACIÓN: EL PODER DEL AMOR QUE SANA Y CONECTA Nada es tan desesperadamente necesario para un ser humano como ser aceptado. En Cristo Dios nos aceptó hasta el extremo. Descubramos juntos cómo funciona la aceptación y cómo podemos recibirla, sanar nuestras heridas emocionales y ser instrumentos del amor de Dios para otros, especialmente en nuestra familia. C-3275 DECLARACIÓN DE INTERDEPENDENCIA ESPAÑOL La interdependencia significa que juntos podemos hacer una diferencia y juntos somos mucho más fuertes. Como humanos somos fundamentalmente seres sociales. Instintivamente sentimos que hay un vínculo profundo entre todos nosotros; un vínculo que va más allá de la familia y los parientes para extenderse a toda la raza humana. El nombre de este vínculo es la interdependencia. La interdependencia es lo que se entiende en Efesios 4:25 cuando San Pablo escribe que todos somos "miembros el uno del otro". Cómo sirves a tu prójimo? En tu comunidad se alientan mutuamente en el amor y las buenas obras? Este taller abordará el concepto de interdependencia y el crecimiento que se experimenta cuando servimos a los demás. Josué Guadarrama, M.A., es un estudiante de doctorado en Psicología de Consejería en la Universidad del Estado de Washington (WSU), entrenador de teoría psicológica con Institute for Individual and Organizational Change (IFIOC). Recibió su Licenciatura En Comunicación Interpersonal y Psicología de Cal State Fullerton (11) y su Maestría en Psicología de Consejería de WSU (13) y realizó investigaciones en la Universidad Estatal de Oklahoma (OSU) y la Universidad de Michigan (UM). Josué tiene diversas experiencias clínicas en una variedad de centros de consejería universitaria que incluyen, WSU, la Universidad de Idaho y la Universidad de Gonzaga. Roma destruyó Jerusalén dando fin en Palestina a una serie de revueltas judías que habían estallado desde los tiempos de Nerón. De los escombros de la guerra la figura de Jesús de Nazaret fue adquiriendo relevancia a través de los evangelios escritos. En este taller examinaremos el contexto histórico, violento y disfuncional que vivió la segunda generación donde, en medio de la locura romana por el control y el poder se escribieron los evangelios revelándose como la auténtica respuesta de Dios para ese momento y para el futuro. Mario Romero es un laico casado con una maestría en Teología Pastoral con muchos años de experiencia en Estudios Biblicos. Colabora regularmente con el Instituto Bíblico de la Diócesis de Los Angeles, con el Instituto para el Ministerio Pastoral de la Diócesis de Orange, con la Universidad de Loyola-Marymount en Los Angeles, con el Instituto Bíblico de Houston, TX. con el Instituto de Espiritualidad Ignaciana de Orange Co. además de otros centros diocesanos de Estudio Bíblico. C-3278 LLAMADOS A VIVIR LA ALEGRIA DEL EVANGELIO EN UNA CULTURA DEL ENCUENTRO En nuestro peregrinar La iglesia de hoy nos llama a un cambio radical de paradigma que nos ayude a dar respuestas a la realidad compleja, convulsionada que vive el mundo para no convertirse en una institución anacrónica incapaz de iluminar la vida de sus integrantes y del mundo. Analizaremos en este taller los puntos fundamentales del llamado a la renovación de la Iglesia que hace el papa Francisco en el documento Evangelii Gaudium (transformación misionera de la Iglesia, dimensión social de la evangelización, motivaciones para un renovado impulso misionero) bajo la mirada permanente de esta cultura del encuentro que continuamente está propiciando el Papa Francisco en consonancia con el Concilio Vaticano II y los sucesivos magisterios de Pablo VI, Juan Pablo II, Benedicto XVI para analizar en que punto del proceso estoy yo como integrante de la iglesia y la comunidad de la que formo parte. Nuestra vida nace y renace del ENCUENTRO CON JESUS. En este taller profundizaremos en algunos elementos esenciales de la Oración, no negociables en la vida del cristiano. Taller C 1:45pm - 3:00pm C-3280 LA DESPEDIDA DE LOS CATECÚMENOS EN EL PROCESO DEL RICA El Rito de la Iniciación Cristiana de Adultos, nos indica que a los catecúmenos se les despide cortésmente a la conclusión de la Liturgia de la Palabra (75.3). En la despedida, los catecúmenos, con la ayuda de algunos fieles, permanecen juntos en el gozo fraterno para poder compartir (67a) y reflexionar más profundamente sobre la palabra de Dios (67b). En este taller, veremos lo que el texto del RICA nos dice sobre la despedida de los catecúmenos y podremos participar en una despedida la cual servirá como ejemplo y proporcionará ideas para preparar las nuestras. Yaoxóchitl Pérez M.A., nació en el D.F., México y fue criada en La Paz, B.C.S. Emigró a Los Estados Unidos cuando tenía quince años. Obtuvo su Licenciatura en Literatura Latinoamericana de la Universidad de Redlands. Por los últimos seis años ella ha trabajado en la oficina para el culto divino en la Diócesis de Orange. Recibio su maestría en teología pastoral con la Universidad de Loyola Marymount en Mayo 2018. C-3281 EL CREDO: UN ENCUENTRO CON LA FE DE LA IGLESIA ESPAÑOL Todo cristiano católico debe estar dispuesto a hablar de su fe con entusiasmo y con un buen nivel de confianza. Aunque dicha responsabilidad compete a todos los bautizados, en particular a los padres de familia, es más urgente en el caso de quienes enseñan la catequesis y sirven como evangelizadores. Por muchos siglos El Credo ha sido la mejor fórmula de fe que resume la riqueza de lo que somos como cristianos. En este taller exploraremos cómo el Credo nos ofrece una oportunidad única para reencontrarnos con la belleza de ser discípulos cristianos que anuncian su fe a tiempo y a destiempo. C-3282 FORJANDO UNA ESPIRITUALIDAD DE IMPACTO Cada uno de los convocados a la jornada de Fe, compartimos un llamado vocacional a vivir una espiritualidad de impacto. Como nos invoca el Papa Francisco; Lo que decimos y como lo decimos, cada palabra y gesto debe expresar la compasión y perdón de Dios para todos. Por lo tanto, nuestro testimonio de Fe en palabra, oración, acción y acompañamiento son partes de la expresión viva y poderosa del evangelio. Durante esta sesión, revisaremos cuatro pilares fundamentales para vivir una expresión plena del evangelio que mueve, inspira y empodera la jornada del prójimo. Taller D 3:15pm - 4:30pm D-3290 CONTEXTO HISTORICO DEL APOCALIPSIS Hacia el final del primer siglo de nuestra era (año 95 d.c.) mientras la supremacía de Roma se hacía sentir sobre los habitantes del imperio por medio de imposiciones socio económicas y religiosas, de la comunidad cristiana surgió un escrito que llamaba a rechazar semejante modelo que consideraba idolatra. El Apocalipsis fue redactado como un llamado a resistir y a mantener la propia identidad, la identidad de quienes no reconocen más Señor que a Cristo Jesús. Al presente, el laico ha tomado el papel importantísimo de ser ministro para el que convalece. La forma particular en como se ha venido consolidando esta experiencia ministerial es llevando la comunión a los enfermos y compartiendo con ellos la Palabra de Dios. Mientras ese modelo de ministerio es completo en si mismo, es importante considerar otros modelos para complementar la administración de la comunión. En esta platica interactiva discutiremos varios modelos de acompañamiento a enfermos. También se presentarán algunas herramientas valiosísimas para todo aquel que quiere tener encuentros significativos con enfermos. Acompañar a enfermos y sus familiares en tiempos difíciles puede ser transformador tanto para el ministro como para el enfermo y su familia. Sau khi nhận tác vụ linh mục năm 2006, cha đi học Linh Đạo Y Nhã tại trường Đại Học Comillas Pontificia Universidad de Madrid ở Tây Ban Nha, và xong bằng tiến sĩ giáo hội (STD) vào tháng 12 năm 2011. Bắt đầu từ mùa thu 2012 tới nay, cha dạy Linh Đạo Y Nhã tại Trường Thần Học Dòng Tên của Trường Đại Học Santa Clara University tại Berkeley. Soeur Christine Trương Mỹ Hạnh sinh tại Huế, Năm 17 tuổi gia nhập Dòng Chúa Chăn Lành ( Good Shepherd sisters). Trở về Sài gòn được bổ nhiệm giám đốc tại Trung Tâm Bảo Trợ phụ Nữ tại Gia Định. Rời VN váo năm 1975, sang Hoa Kỳ sau đó, được gởi về truyền giáo tại Macau, và Hongkong. Được du học tại Anh Quốc, tốt nghiệp thạc sĩ Xã Hội Học tại Đại Học Keele. vào năm 1982. Sr. Mỹ Hạnh trải nghiệm trên 20 năm làm việc với các thiếu nữ phạm pháp, người Hongkong, người VN và bà cũng được hầu hết thuyền nhân VN khăp nơi biết đến, qua nhiều năm phục vụ đồng bào tỵ nạn VN tại Hongkong và các nước tại Đông Nam Á. Soeur Mỹ Hạnh trở về Mỹ vào năm 1990, làm việc với YMCA tiểu bang Maryland, và sau đó được đổi về Atlanta, Georgia. Tại đây, năm 1993 Sr. Mỹ Hạnh đã cùng Đức Cha Nguyễn Thái Thành, thành lập cộng đoàn Công Giáo VN ( nay là Giáo Xứ Các Thánh Tử Đạo VN) và cũng thời gian nấy soeur cũng thành lập Hội Good Shepherd Services, và làm ggám Đốc Điều hành cho đến nay. Recertification Hours Horas de Recertificación For those with valid certification, each workshop attended and keynote can be credited for 1.5 hours towards recertification. Hours will automatically be credited to your file on the IPM Student Portal two (2) weeks after the event.
