Transitions into and out of unpaid care Constituency statistics The carer population is not static it is changing all the time. New analysis by Michael Hirst 1, published in Carers UK s report Need to know, 2 estimates that over 2.1 million people become carers every year while just under 2.1 million people find their caring role comes to an end. That s over 10.6 million new caring episodes over the course of the next five-year Parliament. Without help and support, carers and former carers can find themselves facing debt, financial hardship, stress and relationship breakdown. Many are eventually pushed to breaking point. This has serious consequences for individuals, families, employers and the UK economy as a whole, so it is vital that we do more to ensure all carers have the advice and information they need to access essential support. These tables show transitions in and out of caring by constituency, 34 giving some idea of the challenge in local areas to reach out to new and hidden carers and make sure they have access to the advice and information they need at every stage of their caring journey. Please note that these figures are estimates, calculated using the best national estimate of transitions into and out of unpaid care. 1 Michael Hirst, of the Social Policy Research Unit at the University of York, carried out the research on behalf of Carers UK. Please see Appendix 1 of Need to know (2014) for methodology 2 Available at: carersuk.org/for-professionals/policy/policy-library/need-to-know 3 Data for all usual residents 4 Sources: Office for National Statistics, Northern Ireland Neighbourhood Information Service, National Records of Scotland Constituency statistics Transitions into and out of unpaid care 1
