1 Electorate statistics 2009 Standard Note: SN/SG/5423 Last updated: 1 April 2010 Author: Edmund Tetteh Social and General Statistics This Note provides data on the number of electors and attainers in each parliamentary constituency as at 1 December 2009, published by the Office for National Statistics on 26 February There are 646 constituencies in the UK at the moment. At the next General Election, there will be new boundaries for constituencies in England and Wales. There will be 650 constituencies as a result of the number in England being increased by four. On average, the number of electors in constituencies in England will, however, remain higher than in any of the other three home countries, although the gap will be smaller than previously. Constituencies in Scotland will on average have around 6,000 fewer electors than in England.. Electors per constituency at 1 Dec 2009 Current constituencies Number of seats Average electorate England ,078 Scotland 59 65,588 Wales 40 56,532 Northern Ireland 18 64,487 United Kingdom ,311 Electors per constituency at 1 Dec 2009 New boundaries Number Average of seats electorate England ,537 Scotland 59 65,588 Wales 40 56,532 Northern Ireland 18 64,487 United Kingdom ,878 The source data can be accessed from the Office for National Statistics website: A description of the work of the Parliamentary Boundary Commission, including the criteria used in its reviews can be found on its website at: 1 Further information, including data for local government electors, are available online at: Standard Notes are compiled for the benefit of Members of Parliament and their personal staff. 3 1 Constituency level data The number of parliamentary electors in the UK rose by 226,359 (0.5%) from December 2008 to 45,420,808 in December Following the passage of the Electoral Administration Act in Summer 2006 electoral registration officers (ERO s) were required to take certain specified steps in conducting the electoral registration canvassing as part of complying with this amended duty. This resulted in an increase in the numbers for England and Wales. In Great Britain, electors remain on the register unless they information their electoral registration office of a change of circumstances, whereas in Northern Ireland they must reregister each year. Outreach projects in schools and colleges in Northern Ireland have helped increase the number of young people on the registers and in the number of attainers 2. Within the UK there is a considerable range in the size of the electorate of individual constituencies; from the largest, the Isle of Wight, with 110,228 electors to the smallest, Na h-eileanan an Iar (Western Isles) with 21,908 registered voters. On average, constituencies in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are smaller than in England. Following the reduction in the number of Westminster constituencies for Scotland, the average for Welsh constituencies is the lowest of the four UK countries. The number of constituencies in use at the next election will increase from 646 to Parliamentary electors: 2001 to 2009 Parliamentary Electors: By country England Wales Scotland Northern Ireland United Kingdom 1 December ,296,327 2,235,666 3,966,801 1,196,970 44,695, ,179,095 2,225,599 3,887,059 1,071,600 44,363, ,991,118 2,219,973 3,857,997 1,067,564 44,136, ,043,608 2,233,467 3,857,852 1,045,537 44,180, ,151,991 2,236,808 3,861,207 1,153,409 44,403, ,588,775 2,243,244 3,872,901 1,070,265 44,775, ,817,466 2,257,474 3,887,571 1,120,343 45,082, ,912,549 2,261,769 3,885,148 1,134,983 45,194, ,129,082 2,261,269 3,869,700 1,160,757 45,420,808 Office of National Statistics, Electoral Statistics 2 Attainer is the term used to describe a person who attains the age of 18 during the currency of the electoral register, and is entitled to vote at an election held on or after his or her eighteenth birthday 3
