This is not exactly a "throwdown," but it is always a fun time and promises to be again this year with the following soups already on the menu: Clam Chowder, Taco Soup, Bean Soup, Chili, Chicken Noodle Soup, Italian Wedding Soup, Cheeseburger Chowder, Gumbo or Jambalaya, and Sweet Potato Soup. We could also use one more salad and a dessert. We usually plan for about forty people. And best of all, our providers do not pay the $6 for their meal. Such a deal! Give JoAnn Kagey a call 253-840-9538 or e-mail and let her know how you will dazzle our hungry members on November 7. And thanks for volunteering. From the friendly Totem kitchen
OFFICER S REPORTS COMMODORE CATHY BETTS Can you believe it is November already? We have had so many fun events in the past month. Ron and I attended Carling Ball at Tacoma Yacht Club the end of Sept. We were joined by Tim, Linda, and Mike and Phyllis. The next weekend we went to the Viking Ball which was held at the Sons of Norway Lodge. Tim and Linda went with us to this one. It really makes it fun when members join us at these events. I realize Vice Commodore Debbie and Matt could not make the last 2 because they were on an amazing trip to Greece. The second weekend of Oct we went to Port Orchard and joined the Des Moines Yacht Club. The Past Commodores put this cruise together. We had a blast. The clubs had a decorating boat contest - Which Ron and I won!!!! It was fun to see the kids in costume trick or treat from boat to boat. Great meals and fun times. The weather cooperated the entire weekend. Friday Oct 20th, Ron, Duncan and I went on a great adventure with Matt and Debbie. We went to Seattle to help them bring their new Bayliner home to Tacoma. We had a great day. The weather was a little questionable. But the boat is here and they can start enjoying it. It was a fun day. Saturday Oct 21st Rick, Julie, Mike, Heidi, Lyle, Theresa, Ron and I went to the Des Moines Yacht Clubs Monster Mash Dance. And of course again Totem won! Mike and Heidi won best costume with their amazing outfits (The Day of the Dead.) Hopefully we will see you all at soup night at our next general meeting November 7th. Have a great November everyone! VICE COMMODORE TIM REDING Ahoy! Another month has gone by already. What a great joint Halloween Cruise we had with Des Moines Yacht Club to Port Orchard. Linda and I couldn't make it by boat but we did drive over for the day. There were lots of great costumes, candy and the decorations looked terrific! It was great weather with lots of boats attending. We still have openings for a Rear Commodore and board positions. Please consider stepping up and helping out. We will be looking forward to people signing up to host cruises next year, please contact Lyle Kagey if you are interested as he will be our new Fleet Captain next year. Heidi Merrifield is stepping down so we need to fill her position as Editor of the Totem Line. Looking forward to our Thanksgiving Cruise to Des Moines Marina. Hope everyone can make it that has signed up. It will be a fun weekend decorating the boats. We will have our planning meeting for cruises on Sat., Nov. 25 th at 3:30 pm so please come on down for fun and activities. Thanks to Mike and Heidi Merrifield for hosting our Thanksgiving Cruise. Hope to see you all at the next November meeting. It's soup night! There will be lots of different soups to taste and enjoy. Yum!! REAR COMMODORE DEBBIE ALES This year has flown by and here we are at election time again. Totem has several board positions and appointed officer positions available for 2018. I encourage each of you to consider serving Totem Yacht Club in one of the positions. Please contact any Flag officer or board member if you are interested. We have a few more events coming up this year then we start planning for 2018. We will need volunteers to help with the Commodore s Ball in Feb 2018. Also, as you are cleaning your boat out at the end of the season,
remember we are collecting for the Swap Meet fundraiser in March 2018. Provi has rentals lined up for the clubhouse on November 4 & 19 and December 2, 7 & 9. We are getting inquiries for birthdays, reunions, anniversaries, baby showers, meetings and weddings. Remember to keep your ears open and help promote the clubhouse rentals. The rentals help us pay for the clubhouse maintenance. Information can be found at www.totemyachtclub.com or 253-759-9062. You can send Provi the contact information of anyone interested in renting the clubhouse at joe.n.provi@gmail.com. Matt & I have entered the dark side of power boating. Our new to us boat is a 1995 Bayliner 4587 that we named Sound Traveler. With the help of Cathy and Ron, we brought it from Seattle, thru the locks and put it safely to dock at Delin Docks. We are very grateful to all the Totem family that is helping us learn to handle and run a power boat. Our members are awesome! OTHER REPORTS DECEMBER 5 BLOOD DRIVE 1 7 PM Totem board approved sponsoring a blood drive with Bloodwork s Northwest at our clubhouse, the day of our General meeting Dec.5th. The blood bank people will be taking donations at our clubhouse from 1:00 7:00 pm that day. If you want more information about donating blood go to https://www.bloodworksnw.org FLEET CAPTAIN - RON REDING Get ready for another fun cruise to Des Moines for our Turkey Cruise Nov 24-26, and yes, Xmas decorating. Mike and Heidi are hosting, and they have stuff all planned out (see the flier). I will be heading up a planning meeting to set up next year s cruise schedule on Saturday, Nov 25 at 3:30 pm in the cabana at the Des Moines Marina dock. We are hoping for a lot of you who do not boat up will drive up for that and other activities that day. The marina has implemented paid parking, so be prepared to pay $1 per hour (up to $5 max for the day). WE HAVE 14 BOATS SIGNED UP SO FAR AND THERE IS ROOM FOR MORE. Please contact myself or Heidi to rsvp as we coordinate our club s group reservation. The marina only wants folks calling them if they are arriving on Thursday (which is outside our group reservation date). As we come to the end of the year, please consider participating in this year s Special People s cruise Dec 2. Call me for more info or ask me about it at the next meeting. Our annual Xmas party is that day as well. Happy Holidays, and smooth cruising! HALLOWEEN CRUISE TO PORT ORCHARD OCT 13-15 October in Port Orchard turned out to be excellent this year as we had 8 boats turn out with about 25 Des Moines boats for some fantastic weather, boat decorating, trick or treating, and all around good fun. Page 4

HALLOWEEN CRUISE TRICK OR TREAT If you have arachnophobia you wouldn t want to be near Jim & Nancy Terrell or Al & Sally Vraspir s boats! Pretty spooky stuff! Page 6
DMYC MONSTER BASH Totem always represents well at reciprocal club parties and this year s Halloween dinner dance at Des Moines Yacht Club was no exception! First place for best costume winners were Mike and Heidi Merrifield dressed as Day of the Dead. (Although their pirate costumes were a hit at Port Orchard, at the dance there were lots of pirates, so it paid off to find something unique.) Ron & Cathy went for a wicked look, however Theresa Schneider s wicked tooth fairy was pretty clever, too. Not pictured are DMYC people who took the awards for scariest (monster mask & huge hands), coolest (snowmen) and most creative (hunter & deer). Page 7
