Indiana Chapter Q 2 Wings Over the Dunes Visit our web site at gwrrainq2.org Visit us on Facebook at GWRRA Indiana Chapter Q2 June 2016 Newsletter Volume 19, Issue 6 Hello fellow riders, Now that the weather is getting good for riding, let's get out there and ride those roads. I know a few of us have already done that. The group that went to Columbus told me they all had a great time. A few of us went to the Spring Warm Up in Rockville, and I think we all enjoyed ourselves. I know we did! There are some important fund raiser rides coming up. I hope we can make a good showing for the Chapter. I'm not saying you should go to all of them, but the ones that are important to you and your families. But if we have some showing, that would be great. If there are any ideas on rides or anything to help the Chapter grow or to improve, please let me or a staff member know. Thank you for your support to the new staff as we take this Chapter into the next era of Q2. Ride safe and always ride your own ride. Membership Enhancement Coordinator Kelly Parker Membership Enhancement Coordinators (MECs) check and run the list, call new and/or prospective members, remind members of expiring dues and do the needed paperwork but it is YOU the chapter members who need to take over when a new prospect visits our chapter meetings to see what we are all about. Think about what kind of meeting you attended for the first time and what drew you back. What if you had come and no one acknowledged that you were there and didn t ask if you had any questions or explain the whys, where s and when s. It is the CHAPTER MEM- BERS extending the hand of friendship again and again until new perspective members feel comfortable and want to come back and join us. Part of making new people feel comfortable is to be comfortable yourself. Most of us have been together for several years now we know each other s idiosyncrasies, what makes each other tick and how to get under each other s skin. It takes all kinds of people to make up a Chapter membership and keeping FUN in the fore-front of our motto Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge is a stress and tension releaser. When new people see us having good honest FUN and laughing and sharing funny stories about fun rides and fun places we ve visited just maybe they will want to come back. We need to mentor our new people. We need to extend that hand of friendship and get to know them. We need to take them under our wing and teach them the safety skills and share the knowledge that we have learned. We need to explain what GWRRA benefits are and expound on the GWRRA motto of Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge at all times to make our chapter a fun and great place to be. Find someone to invite and let s make new friends. Remember our Motto Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge 2

Nashville Spring Ride Recap Rider Education Dave & Beth Korwek We had a great time on the ride down to Nashville in Brown County last weekend. Though a little cool, the sun was out and the roads turned out to be in great shape for the most part. There were a few unexpected incidents on the way down, but, all in all, nothing that put a damper on the trip there. We had 15 people on 8 bikes for the ride down with Ron and Joyce Brown meeting us down there in Ron s shiny new blue pickup. Riding in such a large group and only taking secondary roads, there is the challenge of keeping everyone together. Stop signs and lights have a tendency to get the group separated either by the light changing or cars getting in between the bikes. Pulling over in a safe place to let the cars by or for the rest of the group to catch up adds considerable time to the trip. What might take a small group of 3 or 4 bikes a couple of hours, will take 7 or 8 bikes twice that. Make sure that you take that into consideration especially in either cool or hot weather. More frequent stops for people to either warm up or cool off, depending on the temperature, adds even more time to the ride. Make sure everyone is aware of the route that is going to be taken so that they can understand how long of a day it s going to be, that way they can decide for themselves if they want to take an alternate route to your destination to cut down on time. Less than 10 miles from the hotel we ran into a bridge that was out for repair. Thankfully a couple of local people pointed us to a detour that turned out to be a fantastic back road full of curves and hills. Was one of the best roads we did that weekend and I m going to have to remember it for the next time we re down there riding. Yet once again, it added time to the ride. Saturday turned out to be very chilly with the temps in the 40 s. We decided just to head into Nashville and walk around for a while. After a few hours, we all met up and had lunch and decided to do a short ride over the ridge to check out the Story Inn then back to the hotel with a short stop at the Brown County Winery. It was a short day, but given that the temperatures were that cool, it still turned out to be a great day on the bikes. The ride back home added a couple of more unexpected surprises as well. We had a bike die on us for no reason and then fire right back up with no trouble for the rest of the trip and a flat tire and loose bumper on a trailer that was taken care of with little fanfare. All of this adds time to the ride though, and when the temperature is 50 degrees with 15 to 20 mph crosswinds, it takes a toll on the people in the group. Most stayed warm while a few jumped into Ron s and Joyce s truck. Lucky them. We left at 9am our time and after a stop for lunch in Danville, we made it to our house at around 5 pm. For a 220 mile ride that should have taken 5 ½ hours, 9 hours later we pulled into our driveway. That is the reality of a large group on a long ride. I love these little adventures. That s why Beth and I ride. I hope we can do more in the future with the group. Just remember that when riding in large groups, that it s going to take longer. Everyone needs to be aware of this and that we all need to watch out for everyone in the group. Here s to the next adventure with Q2. 3
