Brisbane Airport Corporation Monthly Traffic Update PAGE 1 ISSUE 26 DECEMBER 2009 Northern Access Road Project opens 3 December Brisbane Airport Corporation (BAC) is pleased to announce that after two years of construction the Northern Access Road Project (NARP) is due to open on Two major roads and a number of link roads and bridges will be opened during the night of Wednesday 2 December into the early hours of The new major roads are: Moreton Drive - linking the new Gateway Motorway to Brisbane Airport via exit 108. Nancy-Bird Way - linking Moreton Drive to the International Terminal. The opening of these new roads will create a second major access into and out of Brisbane Airport, reducing traffic on Airport Drive by around 40 percent. NARP OPENING DETAILS Moreton Drive, Nancy-Bird Way, the associated link roads and bridges and new entries to car parks in the Domestic Terminal will be opened during the night of Wednesday 2 December into the early hours of The following are target times for the opening of various parts of the project: Moreton Drive outbound from the terminals - open from 10:30pm Wednesday 2 December. Moreton Drive inbound to the terminals - open from 2:00am Nancy-Bird Way (both directions) - open from 2:00am New entries to the Domestic Terminal s undercover, PARKLONG car park (at the northern end of the car park, accessed via Moreton Drive or Dryandra Road) - open from 8:00pm Wednesday 2 December. New entries into the Domestic Terminal s open-air PARKSHORT car park (accessed via Moreton Drive or Dryandra Road) - open from 8:00pm Wednesday 2 December. New open-air PARKSHORT car park (best for Virgin Blue and Jetstar) open from 8:00pm Wednesday 2 December - access via Chloris Street off ive. Please keep in mind that weather and other unforeseen circumstances may impact these targets. Police and traffic controllers will be in place to assist with traffic management during the transition. Until Moreton Drive opens, access to the Domestic Terminal will remain via ive only.
Chloris St PAGE 2 DOMESTIC TERMINAL PRECINCT WORKS In the lead up to the opening of Moreton Drive, road works will be undertaken in and around the Domestic Terminal precinct. Traffic controllers and police will be on site during these works to assist with traffic management. Expect delays in the Domestic Terminal Precinct between 8:00pm on Monday 30 November and 4:00am on Works include (see map below): Closure of Alpinia Drive between the hours of 8:00pm and 4:00am with all Domestic Terminal bound traffic diverted along Dryandra Road. Entrance to the Domestic Terminal precinct will be made under temporary police control via the new intersection of Dryandra Road and Moreton Drive. Access to the undercover PARKLONG car park will be via the new entries at the northern end of the car park. Access to the existing open-air PARKSHORT car park will be via the reversed Alpinia Drive. Please note that there will be no access to the open-air PARKSHORT car park on the following dates during the following hours: Tuesday 1 December - between the hours of 1:00am and 4:00am. Wednesday 2 December to Thursday 3 December - between the hours of 11:00pm and 2:00am. You will be directed to park in the undercover PARKLONG car park during these times. Dryandra Rd Moreton Dr No access to Alpinia Drive Terminal face roads Domestic Terminal New open-air car park - best for Virgin Blue / Jetstar (up to 4 hours) OPEN 3 DECEMBER Access arrangements for Domestic Terminal Precinct works NARP FINISHING WORKS NARP finishing works will continue for a least two weeks following the opening of Moreton Drive and Nancy-Bird Way. In addition to these works, the replacement of temporary lighting and some remediation works may continue until February 2010. Landscaping works will continue until mid 2010. Where possible, these works will be undertaken at night between 9:00pm and 5:00am, from Sunday to Friday. Temporary lane closures, reduced speed limits and advisory signage may be implemented and during these works, Bridge 1 will be converted to one lane. Traffic controllers will be in place to assist where necessary. Road users are asked to proceed with caution and be aware of changing road conditions. In addition, there will be speed reductions and temporary lane closures within the Domestic Terminal precinct between 3 December 2009 and late December 2009 to facilitate finishing works. ive / Lomandra Drive Night Works Work in this area may result in the intermittent closure of the right hand turn lane from ive into Lomandra Drive, and the right hand turn lane from Lomandra Drive into ive. For motorists wishing to turn right from ive into Lomandra Drive: travel along ive to make a U-turn at the International Terminal Roundabout, returning on the outbound lanes of ive to turn left into Lomandra Drive. For motorists wishing to turn right from Lomandra Drive into ive: turn left from Lomandra Drive into Airport Drive to make a U-turn at the East-West Arterial roundabout, returning on the inbound lanes of ive to the terminals.
PAGE 3 GATEWAY UPGRADE PROJECT (GUP) Changed traffic conditions north of the Gateway Bridge On Thursday 3 December, the new Gateway Motorway airport interchange (Exit 108) will open to link with the NARP s Moreton Drive. To accommodate the changes to traffic between the airport and the old and new Gateway Motorway and to optimise traffic flow, the following southbound traffic configurations will be in place: New Gateway Motorway three lanes merge to two lanes near Kingsford Smith Drive overbridge and continue through to the existing Gateway Bridge. New Gateway Motorway a new Kingsford Smith Drive on-ramp southbound to the Gateway Bridge. Local traffic can continue to use Links Avenue. Old Gateway Motorway the current southbound carriageway near Links Avenue will be reduced to a single lane. For a map of these changes, see page 4 of this traffic update. If you have any queries about the project please call the team s freecall information line on 1800 721 783 or visit the website at www.brisconnections.com.au New Gateway Motorway overpass The night time installation of Super T bridge girders for the new Gateway Motorway overpass is nearly complete with the remaining 10 to be installed in mid to late December. The Super Ts are approximately 36 metres long, which means they must be delivered and installed at night when the volume of traffic is minimal. During installation, motorists can expect shortterm lane closures and detours of the roundabout and Gateway Motorway between 10:00pm and 4:00am. Detailed notification of these changes will be via electronic message boards, 131940.com and SMS traffic alerts. You can register for SMS traffic alerts at brisconnections.com.au New East-West Arterial flyover The East-West Arterial Road has been realigned to the south to allow construction activities for the flyover to commence on the northern side of the road. Piling work continues along the northern side of East-West Arterial Road for the new flyover. Night work for the piling will include crane operations and pre-drilling so that the piles can be driven during the day. Ground improvement work will be ongoing along the northern side of East-West Arterial Road in preparation for construction of the western bridge abutment. Earthwork and pavement installation will commence shortly on ive in preparation for the realignment of the eastbound traffic to the north. This realignment will enable construction of the flyover to commence in the middle of the road between the eastbound and westbound lanes. Bicycle Route Changes With barriers now installed along East-West Arterial Road, bicycle access to the East-West Arterial Road and Nudgee Road intersection is via the existing on-road cycle facility along Widdop Street, Gellibrand Street, Zillman Road and Gerler Road. A 0.5 metre shoulder has been maintained following barrier installation on the outer shoulder of the Airport Roundabout. Service Relocations The relocation of essential services including electricity, sewerage, water main and telecommunications is ongoing within the roundabout and on East-West Arterial Road, Gateway Motorway, ive, Qantas Drive, Lomandra Drive, Nudgee Road and Serpentine Road. As a result of this work there may be intermittent short-term lane closures on Nudgee Road and East-West Arterial Road. BRISBANE CITY COUNCIL Kingsford Smith Drive Upgrade Harvey St to Theodore St Brisbane City Council is upgrading Kingsford Smith Drive between Theodore Street and Harvey Street, at Eagle Farm, as part of the Road Action Program. Construction is due to start in early 2010, and should be complete in early 2011, weather permitting. Construction will mostly occur between 7:00am and 5:00pm from Monday to Saturday. However, night works between 9:00pm and 5:00am and works on Sunday will be necessary for some of the work. The speed limit through the work area will be reduced to 40km/h and traffic control will be in place throughout construction. Motorists should expect some minor delays when travelling through the area. Safe pedestrian and cyclist access through the worksites will be maintained at all times.
