Updated Newsletter 12/22/2018 January, 2019 Flatirons Ski Club An Outdoor Multi Sports and Social Group www.flatironsskiclub.com FSC Ski Club General Meeting Thursday, January 3rd at 7pm General Meetings are held @ the Unitarian Universalist Church, 5001 Pennsylvania Ave, Boulder, CO 80303 BACKYARD BIRDS OF THE FRONT RANGE: Steve Frye, former owner of the Wild Bird Center, will talk to us about what can typically be seen in our backyards. He will talk about ways to attract them, feeders, water features and habitat. Steve is a real expert, and frequently leads bird walks in the Boulder area. Our sympathy to the family and friends of Sara Michl on her passing. Information can be found at the link below: https://www.saramichl.com/ Message from the President: Hello, everyone. Wasn't that a GREAT Christmas Dinner party? It took a lot of folks and time to put the thing together. Kudos to our vivacious and energetic Social Chair Elease Miller. It has been her vision and high standards which has inspired the event. Thank you so much to the volunteers who came over on Friday to help set up the hall. The table decorations in each area were magnificent. Thanks a bunch, to the ham and turkey cooks. Sorry we ran out of turkey at the end. Duly noted. With considerable shuffling around, we managed to keep the main course servings reasonably warm this time. There appeared to be enough wine on hand to keep everyone happy. And doncha' just love those mixed berry pies with strudel topping for dessert? Yum! Great music by the handsome and talented Ted Hine and Marty DeSantis. Thank you, guys! And a special thanks to the people who were able to stay late and help with the breakdown of the tables and the cleanup. It was vastly appreciated. If you want contact info on the two caterers, please feel free to contact me. On another subject entirely, since so many of us are using cell phones so much, please take a look at the current FSC roster. New members most likely have already provided their cell number but longtime members may not have updated that info. If you wish to add your cell number to the roster, please send me an email at <donnadell.scott@gmail.com> or text me at 720.369.7020 and I will collate the additions to the club roster and then send them on to the lovely and efficient Linda G, now aka Linda Briden. Warmest congratulations! Cheers and stay warm, your Prez Donna Scott. With that in mind, please be aware of the following policies: The deposit guarantees your spot on the trip. Deposits in general are non-refundable. Notify the leader promptly if you have to cancel, even if you have only paid the deposit and full payment isn t yet due. Balances must be paid by the due date. If a balance isn't paid by the due date someone from the wait list will take your place. Write a separate check to Flatirons Ski Club for each trip, and write the name of the trip in the memo line. Please promptly communicate any issues directly to the trip leader. 2019 FLATIRON SKI CLUB / MID WEEK SKI SCHEDULE Join us for a day of pleasurable skiing without crowds and lift lines. BOOK CLUB NEWS UPCOMING DATES: Submit one or two book selections by Monday, January 7 to Claudia VanWie A list of the books nominated will be emailed to club members on Thursday, January 10 th. We will meet January 14 th to vote on books. Richard Patnoe has offered to host this meeting at his home, 4353 Apple Court, Boulder SOME SUGGESTIONS FOR FINDING BOOKS: Look through the books we have already read and see which books you really enjoyed and thought were worthwhile, and that led to good discussion. You might want to look for similar books to nominate. Find books that are 400 pages or less. Really check out the book to see that it is readable. It is best if you have already read most of it. Select books for which you are willing to be the discussion leader. WINTER Skiing in CRESTED BUTTE Lodging at the CRISTIANA GUESTHAUS Jan. 25 th, 26 th & 27 th, 2019 The trip is just a few weeks away. Informational emails will be sent to paid participants in early January with trip information. Unfilled rooms have been released back to the Cristiana. There is currently no waiting list people adding their names to the list now would take the place of someone who has had to drop out at the last minute. Please call or email trip leaders Linda or Chris Paris with questions. Frasier Ski Trip Feb. 22nd 25th A reminder that the balance of the Fraser trip cost ($110.00) is due to Linda and Chris Paris by Thursday, January 3, 2019 either at the FSC meeting or by mail to arrive at their home by that date. If a person who paid a deposit cannot go, she/he needs to contact the trip leaders by that date as well. There is a short waiting list, so those adding to it now have a decent chance that a cancellation may occur to get him/her on this popular trip. Email or call trip leaders Chris or Linda Paris with questions. Snowy Range Ski Resort (Near Laramie WY) January 30- February 1 st Cost $95 2 nights, Old Corral Hotel, Centennial, WY Adult lift Ticket $49, Age 70+ free This is a really fun area to downhill ski and there are a lot of cross-country ski trails in the area. There are now 27 members on the trip. Centennial is 161 miles from Boulder (2 hr. 35 min.) and no mountain passes Due to a cancellation there is space now for one woman. Leader: Stewart Woodward 303-665-9438 ***Save the Date(s)*** Bicycle Ride in Summit/Lake County, three days two nights. Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, September 4, 5, 6th of Labor Day week.
