1 AIRSIDE SAFETY MATTERS Issue 18 / November 2017 Welcome to the latest edition of the LBA Airside Safety Bulletin Here at LBA we are absolutely committed to achieving the highest standards in Airside Safety. This bulletin is designed to provide Airline operators, Airport Service Providers & Ground handlers with informative, up-to-date information regarding Airside Health & Safety at LBA. Preparing for Winter Operations 2017/2018 SNOPLAN 2017/2018 has been implemented. Snow clearing equipment has been re-positioned to stand 1. Servicing is underway on the equipment. All staff who normally operate snow kit please complete refresher training. Two new Tractors on site (1x McCormick & 1x New Holland.) Initial training available on these vehicles. PEDESTRIANS When moving around the airport please remember for your own safety: Anyone can help... Prill bins & Snow clearing equipment lockers are located at stand 5 (AOU office) & stand 8 (Swissport Load Control). This equipment is for use by anyone. If you see some ice please treat it using the equipment provided. STICK TO THE GREEN WALKWAYS. Only designated walkways are treated for ice. If you stray from a designated walkway you may encounter ice and slip. Stick to the walkways for a safe passage through the airside environment. Designated safe walkways are clearly identified by green paint. If you can make your journey indoors instead please do.
2 NEWS: Introducing David Laws Since joining LBA in May, new Chief Executive David Laws has spoken several times of his focus on safety and security. With 39 years of airport experience, David brings with him a commitment to these two vital areas of the business. He intends to work closely with the operations team on ensuring best practice is adhered to throughout. David was previously Chief Executive of Newcastle Airport for ten years. He began his career as a trainee Fireman at Newcastle Airport in April 1979 and went onto become Fire Officer and then the airport s Safety Advisor. David held a number of roles in airport operations; before becoming Commercial Director responsible for the development of the Airline and Retail business. He was then appointed Chief Executive, overseeing major development of the terminal. Safety and security are of paramount importance and two areas that can never be compromised, said David. A lot of fantastic work is being done by staff in these areas already and I d like to thank colleagues for their work in this area. But we can never get complacent. Procedures must be followed and any amends to them communicated well. LBA trialling liquid de-icer on walkways This winter LBA Airside Operations are trialling the use of GEN3 de-icer fluid currently used on roads, taxiways & the runway on pedestrian walkways too. This product (which is a liquid variant of the prills currently used on walkways) has been utilised in pedestrian areas by other airports and train stations and provides effective immediate de-icing properties. PLEASE BE AWARE: Staff applying the liquid will be wearing PPE including masks. The product is safe for use but forms a mist during application that should not be breathed in. Speak to Airside Operations with any queries or concerns you might have.
3 Apron Road Rear of stands (Stands 3/5/19/20/21) We are still experiencing incidents involving staff driving in front of or behind live aircraft. Drivers are reminded they must NEVER Drive behind aircraft with beacons illuminated on stand Drive in front of aircraft taxiing onto stand. ***This is basic airside driving*** The only way you can be certain that it is safe to proceed is to STOP AND CHECK. The necessity to check beacons on remote stands is as vital is it is on contact stands. We are an engineering base at LBA. Aircraft do frequently carry out engine runs. We also operate flights from these stands (19, 20A/B, 21A/B/C) To reiterate. CHECK THE BEACONS We cannot stress how important it is to stop at stop bars. Penalties for noncompliance of airside driving rules range from 3 points on airside driving permit to permeant withdrawal of airside driving permit. Can you work without yours? Some turboprops start their engines using power from a GPU. Seeing equipment attached to an aircraft doesn t mean it isn t dangerous to drive behind. Check the beacon, check the beacon, CHECK THE BEACON
