1 SOANE TRAVELS: Glasgow & Edinburgh Exploring Scotland s Architectural Legacy May 18 26, 2019 The Pineapple The legacy of Scotland s architecture is varied and interesting. From medieval castles to palatial homes to Georgian townhouses to cutting-edge modernism, this enchanting country holds a wealth of design greatness, innovation, and creativity. On a tour through Scotland, explore the works of several key Scottish architects who have left their mark on the architectural map of the country. Admire buildings designed by William Henry Playfair, who transformed Edinburgh in the 1800s; Charles Rennie Mackintosh, known for his Art Nouveau-inspired buildings in Glasgow; and other noted architects. This exclusive journey features private visits to Hawthornden Castle, the Georgian House, Broomhall House, and more. HIGHLIGHTS Enjoy a private reception at the Georgian House, designed by the Scottish Neoclassical architect, Robert Adam Tour Broomhall House, which has been in the Bruce family for over 300 years and will be opened exclusively for our group by Lord Bruce Visit two Moray Place houses, both of which were designed by Scottish architect Alexander "Greek" Thomson, by invitation of the owners Attend a pre-opening visit to Mackintosh s domestic masterpiece, Hill House
2 ITINERARY Saturday, May 18 DEPARTURE Depart for Edinburgh on an overnight flight. Sunday, May 19 EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND Arrive in Edinburgh and transfer to our hotel, where rooms have been reserved for guaranteed early check in. Lunch is at leisure. In the afternoon, gather for a leisurely walking tour, stopping first at Scott Monument. This Victorian monument to Sir Walter Scott, carved by Sir John Steell of Carrara marble, features the famous writer with his beloved dog Maida. Then head to the Royal Scottish Academy, founded by eleven artists in Today it houses exhibition and education spaces. Afterwards, visit the National Gallery of Scotland which includes masterpieces by Botticelli, Vermeer, Raphael, and van Gogh, as well as a fine collection of works by Scottish painters including Ramsey and Raeburn. Return to the hotel for our welcome dinner. D Scott Monument, Edinburgh Monday, May 20 EDINBURGH This morning head up to Calton Hill, this UNESCO World Heritage Site features panoramic views overlooking the city and is home to some of Scotland s famous monuments such as the Dugald Stewart Monument designed by Scottish architect William Henry Playfair. Next walk by the 19 th -century neoclassical Old Royal High School whose future use is a cause of much debate. Then walk to the foot of Calton Hill to see the Rock House, an 18 th century historic gem whose elevated terrace has the most idyllic views overlooking the landmarks of Edinburgh. Walk down to Royal Mile for lunch. Stop to admire the Scottish Parliament Building, a modernist masterpiece by Enric Miralles. Next door is the 16 th -century Palace of Holyroodhouse, a treasure house of Scottish royal history and the Queen s official residence while in Edinburgh. See the Queen s Gallery, part of the palace complex, with changing exhibits drawn from the Royal Collection of Old Master paintings, rare furniture, and decorative arts. After the visit, board the bus for a drive to the Royal Observatory which was established in En route stop for a brief visit of the Catholic Chapel of St. Albert the Great. Opened in 2013 and designed by Simpson & Brown, the contemporary structure features a curved timber roof supported by steel columns in the shapes of trees. Return to the hotel for dinner at a nearby restaurant. B,L,D National Trust of Scotland s Georgian House, Edinburgh Tuesday, May 21 EDINBURGH On an excursion south of Edinburgh, visit some of Scotland s finest stately homes. See Sir Walter Scott s baronial home, Abbotsford, which inspired Scott s greatest poems and novels. Wander through the beautiful formal gardens and woodlands that surround this historic house. Enjoy lunch before heading north to Arniston House, once described as one of the most important William Adam houses in Scotland. A short distance away is Hawthornden Castle, once home of the poet William Drummond, who built his house around a ruined 15 th -century tower. The castle is now a private retreat for writers, and our group has been given special access to visit (pending confirmation). Return to Edinburgh. In the late afternoon, walk to the New Town, an area enriched with fine Georgian townhouses, where we will enjoy a private reception at the National Trust of Scotland s Georgian House. Designed by Scottish Neoclassical architect Robert Adam, this beautifully decorated house provides a glimpse of what life was like for a prosperous 18 th -century family. Dinner is at a local restaurant. B,L,R,D Wednesday, May 22 EDINBURGH Today head north, stopping first to see Scotland s iconic 3 bridges: Forth Bridge, opened in 1890 and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, famous for its cantilever design; Forth Road Bridge, a long span suspension bridge; and Queensferry Crossing, the world s longest three-tower, cable bridge in the world. Stop at South Queensferry to catch a glimpse of the 3 bridges spanning the Firth of Forth. Continue to Scone Palace, the crowning site of the King of Scots, including Robert the Bruce, for a guided visit. The Palace houses a wonderful collection of paintings and antiques and the grounds are world-renowned. Enjoy lunch at Scone Palace. After lunch, drive back to the newly opened Broomhall House for an exclusive visit hosted by Lord Bruce. Opened only for us, this hugely significant building in the history of Scottish architecture has been in the same
3 family for over 300 years. Begun in the early 18 th -century, the original building was remodeled 60 years later by the architect John Adam. And at the close of the century, the house was redesigned by Thomas Harrison in the Greek Revival style. Enjoy an afternoon tea at this special family home before returning to Edinburgh for dinner and evening at leisure. B,L,T Thursday, May 23 EDINBURGH / GLASGOW This morning depart for Glasgow. Stop for a guided visit to 17 th -century Hopetoun House, one of Scotland s finest stately homes. Designed by the Scottish architects Sir William Bruce and William Adam, the house is surrounded by 150 acres of gardens. Following a tour of this idyllic estate, enjoy a falconry demonstration and lunch. Afterwards, drive to one of Scotland s strangest buildings, The Pineapple. Built in 1761 as a summerhouse, the site once grew unusual fruits and vegetables in the glasshouses and walled garden. Continue to Glasgow for two very special visits (pending confirmations) at Moray Place, a terrace of 10 houses designed by noted Scottish architect Alexander "Greek" Thomson. By invitation of the owners, see Thomson s former home at 1 Moray Place, followed by a special reception at art historian Evelyn Silber s own Thomson-designed home (the Double Villa). Check in to the hotel before dinner at a local restaurant. In the afternoon, take a walking tour through Glasgow s city center, ending with afternoon tea at the famous Willow Tea Rooms, designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Enjoy some free time before dinner at one of Glasgow s fine restaurants. B,T,D Saturday, May 25 GLASGOW On a mini design tour of contemporary Glasgow along the waterfront, see Zaha Hadid s Riverside Museum of Transport.
