1 WOMEN S LEADERSHIP BOARD TRAVEL/STUDY VIETNAM & CHINA MARCH 8 24, 2013 SPONSORED BY THE HARVARD KENNEDY SCHOOL AND THE HARVARD ALUMNI ASSOCIATION These programs can be taken separately or as a complete journey. The Women s Leadership Board of the Harvard Kennedy School invites you on a very special travel study trip to Vietnam and China. In addition to some traditional sightseeing, the trip is largely composed of daily discussions, presentations, and experiences with women leaders in the fields of government, business, education, media, and the arts. Also, joining you for the China portion of the program will be Tony Saich, faculty chair of the China Public Policy Program at the Kennedy School, whose insights on socio-economic developments in China will contribute toward your understanding of the relationships between these neighboring nations. Even for those well-travelled in the region, this program will address topics and reveal aspects of Indian society that are new and fascinating and yet overlooked on conventional tours. STUDY LEADER: TONY SAICH is the director of the Ash Institute for Democratic Governance and Innovation; the Daewoo Professor of International Affairs; and faculty chair of Asia Programs and the China Public Policy Program. From 1994 to July 1999, he was the Chief Representative of the China Office at the Ford Foundation in Beijing. Prior to this, he was the director of the Sinological Institute, Leiden University, the Netherlands. His teaching and research focus on the interplay between state and society in Asia and the respective roles they play in determining policy-making and framing socio-economic development. He has written several books on development in China including China: Politics and Government (1981); China s Science Policy in the 80s (1989); Revolutionary Discourse in Mao s China (1994 with David E. Apter); and The Rise to Power of the Chinese Communist Party (1996). He received his BA (Hons) from the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, his MSc (Econ) from the School of Oriental and African Studies, London University, and his PhD from Leiden University. He studied in China on a British Council reciprocal scholarship from and has visited China almost every year since. From , he was a visiting research fellow at the Fairbank Center, Harvard University, and in the academic year , he was a visiting professor at UCLA. Private boat cruise with lunch on the Li River to Yangshuo a town surrounded by karst peaks and bordered by the river. Return to Guilin by bus for dinner with a guest speaker and an after dinner walk along the 1000-year old Zhengyang Walking Arcade. Overnight at the Shangri-la Hotel. 3 WEDNESDAY, MARCH 20 GUILIN Depart this morning for a full day visit to Hezhou, a scenic 90-minute drive from Guilin. Enjoy lunch and an afternoon visiting a local healthcare company. FRIDAY, MARCH 22 BEIJING Enjoy a lunch of organic Buddhist vegetarian food today at the Pure Lotus Restaurant. After lunch visit the Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven. Peking duck dinner at Quanjude Restaurant with time to stroll through the Wangfujing District afterwards before returning to the hotel. SATURDAY, MARCH 23 BEIJING Today visit Sun Village, in a north central suburb of the city, a private charity organization founded by a former prison guard, Ms. Shuqin Zhang, 18 years ago to care for the children of prisoners. She has cared for over 5,000 children with no government funding and was nominated for the Nobel Prize in After lunch visit a special art gallery and the famous artist Mr. Minglou Zhang who specializes in painting Dunhuang inspired wall paintings.
