I bet you do, I replied. She was adamant that she didn t collect. Look I said, one item isn t a collection, two could be a pair but three, well that s the start of a collection. She thought about it for a few moments and then stated that she had a liking for Toby Jugs and that she had three already and that she had thought about buying one a few stalls away that day. Everyone collects; it s in our nature, ever since Hunter/Gather man thousands of years ago. They used to collect not only to survive but to pick up coloured pebbles just for pure enjoyment. The 1920 s was the real boom start for amateur collectors, children in particular, not distracted by today s technology of computer games, (although they can now be very collectable!) Collected stamps. Cigarette Cards, and Foreign Coins. While adults collected more fancy things such as China Tea Sets, which unless really unique, or of a quality manufacture, are not worth very much! In this series I am going to look at the many aspects of collecting and hopefully introduce a whole new hobby to as many people as I can. Collecting is addictive and whether you want to collect as an investment or for pure pleasure then it is entirely up to you, nobody is going to dictate what you should collect or why it is your choice. You could go for the usual collectables such as stamps and postcards or the most unusual such as Tea Bag Tags or Sugar Packets-whatever takes your fancy. But be aware you will not be the only one that collects your chosen subject! The internet has povided both a market place and an information bureau for anything that could be collected for example, just type in Cigar Bands, there are loads for sale on ebay- look in Wikipedia, there is information and history on them. Fascination soon becomes prelevant and you can seea whole new meaning or collecting. Over the next few issues I will try and tempt you into the amazing world of collecting, even if you can t spare the time to browse car boot sales or antique shops or if you are housebound and cannot get about. Saturday am - 4pm 3 Town Top, Kirkheaton, Huddersfield, HD5 0HL Telephone: Ingredients 300g puff pastry 1 egg and 1 extra egg yolk beaten together For the filling 2 tbsp vegetable oil 700g/1lb 9oz stewing beef, diced 200g/7oz lamb kidney, diced 2 medium onions, diced 30g/1oz plain flour 850ml/1½ pints beef stock salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste a dash of Worcestershire sauce INSTRUCTIONS Preheat the oven to 220C/425F/Gas 7 Heat the vegetable oil in a large frying pan, and brown the beef all over. (You may need to do this in batches.) Set aside, then brown the kidneys on both sides in the same pan. Add the onions and cook for 3-4 minutes. Return the beef to the pan, sprinkle flour over and coat the meat and onions Add the stock to the pan, stir well and bring to the boil. Turn the heat down and simmer for 1½ hours without a lid. If the liquid evaporates too much, add more stock. Remove from the heat. Add salt, pepper and Worcestershire sauce and allow to cool completely. Place the cooked meat mixture into a pie dish. Roll out the pastry to 5mm/¼in thick and 5cm/2in larger than the dish you are using. Using a rolling pin, lift the pastry and place it over the top of the pie dish. Trim and crimp the edges with your fingers and thumb. Brush the surface with the beaten egg mixture and bake for minutes until golden-brown and puffed. Serve with creamy mash and steamed vegetables to soak up the gravy. 11 20 GARDENS & PETS RSPCA JESS ZIA Jess is a lovely 2 year old Staffordshire Bull Terrier Cross who came into the Centre via RSPCA Inspectors as she had been badly beaten by her previous owners. Despite this, this girl absolutely loves people! She is a very active dog and has lots of energy to run about and play. One of her favourite things is to go for a ride in the car so she can put her head out of the window to get some air! Jess is fully house trained and can be left alone for short periods of time. Jess has had a difficult life so far and has been treated terribly by humans so really does deserve the chance of a permanent loving home. If you could offer Jess a new home and a chance at a new life, please contact the Animal Centre on or pop in and visit her. If you would like to report an act of animal cruelty or neglect, please call the National Helpline on The RSPCA halifax, huddersfield And district BRAnCh The RSPCA Halifax, Huddersfield and District Branch rescues, rehabilitates and rehomes hundreds of animals each year in the Kirklees and Calderdale area. Each branch of the RSPCA is an independent registered charity separate from the National RSPCA, with a local board of trustees overseeing the management of the branch. We have to raise our own funds to keep our Animal Centre running and with our annual running costs at 400,000, we rely heavily on the generosity and support of the local community. Last year we admitted over 1400 animals into our care many of which had been ill-treated, neglected or abused by cruel owners. We can house up to 33 dogs and 44 cats along with a variety of smaller animals at our Animal Centre, which is currently based in Halifax. We have a non-destruction policy, and aim to find suitable, caring and permanent homes for all the animals brought into the Centre. Although our Animal Centre is currently based in Halifax, our Branch covers from Holmfirth to Hebden Bridge! The Huddersfield branch and Halifax Branch decided to merge in early 2010 to make a single larger branch that would be more efficient and effective at delivering positive animal welfare services to the area. 15 28 MOTHER & BABY FORGET ME NOT CHILDREN S HOSPICE STORES Forget Me Not Children s Hospice is a charity that supports children with life limiting conditions and their families across Calderdale, Kirklees and Wakefield. We are a charity which thrives on community support, and one of the ways in which we receive this support is through our stores. We have 11 stores in total across West Yorkshire, each offering some fantastic products and allowing you the chance to show your support to the charity. One of these stores is located in Golcar (10 Swallow Lane, Golcar, Huddersfield, HD7 4LU). Run by Damian and Linda alongside an enthusiastic and vibrant team of volunteers, our Golcar store offers a fantastic boutique-like twist on charity shops, with some wonderful products available within a beautifully laid out store. Another one of our stores is located in Lindley (111 Lidget Street, Lindley, Huddersfield, HD3 3JR). Run by the bubbly Diane Radcliffe and her fantastic friendly team of volunteers, the Lindley store has some great quality fashionwear available for all ages, all set within a spacious family-friendly area. We care passionately Call our professional team on Forget Me Not Children s Hospice - Supporting over 100 Children and Families We have more than doubled the care we provide throughout West Yorkshire since officially opening the hospice in June last year. Forget Me Not Children s Hospice is now supporting over 100 children and families through the Hospice at Home service and at the state-of-the-art hospice Russell House. Last year, we were supporting 50 families through our services which shows the progress which has been made within the last twelve months.
