3 Introduction The workplace is a setting where many people spend the largest proportion of their time and therefore can play a key role in contributing to the health of their employees and in turn the health of their organisation. Having a healthy and productive workforce should be every organisation s ambition, especially in today s competitive business environment. You need good health to work, and work can give you good health. For our population the trend is for people to live longer and work longer and more people are developing long-term health conditions like diabetes, heart disease or poor mental health. We need to make sure workplaces help people to achieve and stay in good health while at work and take account of these additional challenges. It is estimated by the Work Foundation that 1 in 3 of the working age population in England report having at least one long-term condition 1 Workplace health interventions play an important part in raising awareness and understanding of the benefits of both physical and mental wellbeing in the workplace. Mental Health conditions are a leading cause of sickness absence and the Work Foundation estimated that 15 million days sickness were lost in 2014 due to stress, depression and anxiety. Settings have an important role in improving health and well-being by creating opportunities in a distinct location with the ability to reach large numbers of people and use peer support to create and reinforce healthier social norms. Workplaces can help to target those who may not engage with more formal sources of advice and support, for example, men are less likely to access primary care. Employees may become catalysts of change within their own home or community by using the workplace as a start point for adopting new, healthier habits that can be extended across all forms of their daily life. Cornwall Workplace Health Programme Cornwall Workplace Health is a county standard of good practice and a quality mark of health and wellbeing in the workplace. Working towards this award will help Cornwall and Isles of Scilly achieve the vision of being one of the healthiest places to work. The scheme won the National Royal Society of Public Health - Health & Wellbeing Award and got the maximum 3 year accreditation. The scheme has been supported and Dame Carol Black has presented achievement awards to 52 workplaces at the Award Ceremony in February Having such national recognition brings credibility to the award locally and allows Cornwall to compete and excel at a national level. The award programme follows all NICE guidance and HSE Management standards and aims to recognise good practice within organisations focussing on the health and wellbeing of staff and help identify areas for improvement. 1 The Work Foundation report Is welfare to Work, Working Well?,

8 Developments in 2016/17 Workplace Health Co-ordinator joins Award panel After winning a 3 year Health and Wellbeing Award in 2014 from the Royal Society of Public Health for the Workplace Health Award Programme, it was a real honour for the Workplace Health Coordinator to be invited by the Royal Society of Public Health to be part of the RSPH Assessment & Award Panel for the 2015 Health & Wellbeing Awards And most recently invited back to join the national assessment panel for the 2016 Health & Wellbeing Awards. This involved 3 days in London in 2016 and 2 days in 2017 working with a wide range of colleagues from across the UK from a variety of public health and other health organisations assessing and interviewing all of the award entries for 2015 & It gave a great insight in to a wide range of organisations from across the whole of the UK working to improve the health of the population from all different backgrounds, sectors and health topics. It also provided an opportunity to promote and share the good work happening in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. Additions to the Workplace Health Team In September 2016 two new members of staff joined the Workplace Health Coordinator in taking forward the Workplace Health Award Programme. Amy Bromfield, Healthy Lifestyles Development Advisor and Graham Hicks, Workplace Health Support Worker. This has really strengthened the programme and with increased capacity has helped sustain and continue to progress the Workplace Health Programme. Looking Ahead Every two years the programme criteria is reviewed and refreshed to ensure it continues to follow NICE guidelines, evidence based practice and local developments and support; this is due to take place again in summer Annually the Workplace Health Coordinator speaks with Dame Carol Black and key recommendations from Dame Carol Black this year (2017) included Finance, Women s Health, Sleep, Obesity and Carers.
