3 Stage Information (Note: there will be toilet facilities and catering vans at all stages.) Last year s RACMSA Rally of Scotland winner Guy Wilks will return to defend his title this year, driving the Škoda UK Motorsport Fabia S2000 in which he and co-driver Phil Pugh are contesting this year s Intercontinental Rally Challenge. Having competed on some of the most challenging rally stages all over the world during his career to date, Guy knows exactly what makes a good rally stage both for a driver and a spectator. The 2010 Rally of Scotland route is very similar to last year s, allowing the double British Rally Champion the chance to give a personal insight into each of the demanding Special Stages Scotland has to offer, and explain the great sporting challenges competitors will face on this year s event. Ceremonial Start and Stages 1 & 2 Scone Palace, Perth Car Park A Scone Palace is the historical home of the Stone of Destiny, the stone that Kings and Queens of Scotland were crowned upon. Robert the Bruce was crowned here in 1306 and the last coronation took place in 1651, when King Charles II became King of Scotland and England. There is a replica of the Stone of Destiny in the grounds of Scone Palace today and this historic site is even mentioned in Shakespeare s Macbeth. The first 10 cars will be waved off in front of the palace by special guests (to be confirmed nearer the time see for details) to mark the start of the 2010 RACMSA Rally of Scotland. Shortly after this ceremony the first of the competitive stages will take place with the competitors rallying past the entrance to the Palace and on through the grounds to get the real action underway. This stage will be run twice and will feature trade stands and an autograph signing session inside Scone Palace, pm, before the action starts. Guy Wilks says: A fantastic stage to start the rally in front of such an historic building in Scotland. A tricky stage with lots of surface changes. It s starts on asphalt, and of course the rally cars are set-up for gravel, there is loose gravel in front of the house and a very slippery slope down to what was the finish last year so very exciting for spectators. The stage has been extended by the organisers for 2010 and I believe that it is now very fast towards the end, again on a tricky mixture of tarmac and gravel. If you push hard you can make up some time, but there are some unusual obstacles and it could be the end of your rally if you hit anything. Where to watch There is raised viewing of the Special Stage right in front of the Palace as the cars turn 90 right and head through the ancient stone archway. This viewing area is right in front of the Stone of Destiny and the 8th Earl of Mansfield s Family Chapel. From this location it is possible to view the cars from just after the start until they disappear through the stone archway. How to get there and where to park Follow the A989 out of Perth, at the traffic lights branch left onto the A85, signposted Blairgowrie & Coupar Angus, then turn left at the next traffic lights onto the A93, signposted Blairgowrie & Coupar Angus. At the traffic lights bear left onto the A93, signposted Blairgowrie. Follow the signs to Perth Race Course, you will pass the entrance to Scone Palace and then you will pick up the Rally of Scotland Spectator arrows that will direct you to the spectator car parking at Perth Race Course. From the car park the walkway will be floodlit to the main spectator area in front of the Palace. This walkway will take you across the Special Stage. It is possible to view the cars as they come down Yew Tree Walk and continue on to the finish but the best viewing with all the facilities is at the Palace. The walkway is a mixture of gravel and a path through a grass field. Refreshments, catering, merchandise stands and toilets will be available in the main spectator viewing area. Car park A will open at 17:00 on Friday 15 October. Subject to availability, tickets will be for sale on the day 10 per adult. Children aged 15 or under go free. Stages 3 & 6 Craigvinean Car Parks B and C After the short blast around Scone Palace the real meat of the competition starts with almost 18 kilometres along the steep sides of Craigvinean Forest. This test starts with a long climb for the cars to the top of the hill at 400 metres in height before travelling along the top ridge for some distance and descending through numerous hairpins and arriving at the stop line, which is very close to where the competitors started from around 15 minutes earlier. Due to the nature of the climb and the height of the hill it is common for the top section to be covered in mist and fog. This also happens to be one of the quickest sections of the test so fortune will favour the brave and those committed to their pace notes. Guy Wilks says: You couldn t want for a nicer opening forest stage. It was my first forest stage in a Škoda Fabia S2000, so we won t be taking it so easy this time. Craigvinean is very fast and flowing for the first two-thirds of the stage, allowing you to really attack it. The last third is extremely tricky and very slippery if it s wet the surface here seems to really hold the water, so the car moves around a lot. There are a lot of blind crests, you need total commitment throughout the stage and the pace notes need to be spot on. The spectator area at The Hermitage is a great place to watch the action from. Where to watch Just up from Spectator car park C there is a 90 left hand uphill bend that offers the chance to see the cars powering through and start their climb up the hill. All the way up from here for the next mile there is good viewing through the twists and turns to the top of the climb. Around a mile from the end there is a section of very fast viewing as the crews come to the end of a very quick section and re-enter the narrower, minor forestry tracks as they continue towards the end of the stage. Viewing is high on the bank offering good views down onto the cars and it is possible to walk further into the forest to see the crews tackle the more technical sections. How to get there and where to park Car Park B From the A9 north bound follow the signs to Inverness. Once past the junction for the A822, signposted Crieff, turn left at the tourist sign for The Hermitage. Follow the Rally of Scotland spectator signs to the spectator car park which is in a grass field. It is then a short walk on a gravel road up to the spectator viewing area. There will be limited disabled parking at car park B. Car Park C Turn off the A9 onto the B898, signposted Dalguise, go past the first forest entrance on the left and approximately 1.5 miles further on there is a second forest entrance. This is the entrance to Car Park C. Follow the Rally of Scotland spectator signs and park on the right hand side of the gravel road to allow other cars to exit from the spectator viewing area. Craigvinean car parks B and C will open at 05:00 on Saturday 16 October. Car parks B and C are for advance ticket holders and, strictly subject to availability, will offer tickets for sale on the day 20 per adult. Children aged 15 or under go free. Stages 4 & 7 Drummond Hill Car Parks F & G 19 kilometres of what is said to be the best stage in the world by BP Abu Dhabi Ford Team Director, Malcolm Wilson, Drummond Hill is not for the faint-hearted. At its highest point it is the same height as Craigvinean but some of the drops that the gravel roads cling to are fairly steep. The stage is very fast in character and goes from open, tree felled areas to densely forested sections but all include lots of flat-out crests and blind corners. The bold with total commitment to their pace notes will do well in this stage. Guy Wilks says: The best known stage of the area, and for good reason. It s very quick and narrow at the start, and you need to be brave because it s full of inclines and very steep drops. It then begins to open out and continues to be quick. It can be very slippery last year there had been logging near the start and it was really tricky in the open section. It s a beautiful driver stage, but you have to treat it with respect if you re brave you can gain a lot of time, but it s also easy to end your rally in there too, especially if it s slippery. We had a great run through here last year. Where to watch One spectator location can be accessed from car park G and is within the last few kilometres of the stage. This technical section on the lower part of the hill ends with the cars entering the spectator zone over a blind crest into a 90 right and powering away in a flat-out blast to the end. Using the high banks to gain access further into the stage will let you see the cars tackle a series of left, right, left kinks in this demanding stage. Car park F gives access onto the mid-point of the stage. The viewing here is of a fast downhill section where the crews can make up a lot of time by staying on the power for as long as possible. How to get there and where to park Travel through the town of Aberfeldy and take the bridge over the River Tay towards Weem on the B846. Car Park G - Approximately 5.5 miles further on, the Rally of Scotland spectator signs will direct you onto the unclassified road towards Kenmore. The spectator arrows will direct you to the car park. From here it is an uphill climb to the spectator viewing area. Car Park F Bear right onto the unclassified road towards Fearnan, the car park is 2.3 miles from the B846 on a narrow unclassified tarmac road. Car parks G and F will open at 06:30 on Saturday 16 October and are for advance ticket holders and, strictly subject to availability, will offer tickets for sale on the day 20 per adult. Children aged 15 or under go free. Page 3

4 Stages 5 & 8 Errochty Car Parks D and E The second longest stage of Day 1 at nearly 18 kilometres, Errochty climbs over Cragan Liath Mor through Tummel Forest to emerge down by the shores of Loch Tummel. This test starts off very technical with many twists and hairpins before opening up to a very fast, flowing blast over the top of the hill. The forestry have been heavily harvesting this area and for those competitors who perhaps cut a line too aggressively, there is the real danger of a puncture that will end in a timely loss in a stage of this length. Both runnings of this stage will feature live Eurosport TV coverage. Guy Wilks says: Very fast once again absolutely flat out in places. Some sections are quite open, so spectators can see the rally cars for a long time. The last few kilometres from last year aren t being used this year to accommodate the live television broadcast for Eurosport on this stage. With the open sections there should be fantastic footage from the helicopter for those at home. Where to watch From car park D, the main spectator location within the Errochty stage can be reached. Right at the mid-point it enables you to see who is catching who, who has a problem and who is really on it. The area is an open 90 left with good viewing locations on both sides of the road of the approach and departure. It is a very fast approach to the tight left hander that will reward the driver who can carry the most momentum through the corner whilst getting his braking right. The viewing from the start (car park E) involves an uphill walk of around 2kms to an uphill left hairpin. It is a very fast approach all the way up from the start line. How to get there and where to park Car Park D - From the A9 North exit at the turn off for Killiecrankie, then turn left onto the B8019 over the Garry Bridge. Follow the Rally of Scotland spectator arrows past the end of the stage till you enter the spectator car park on your right. The car park is roadside parking on a Forestry Enterprise road with a walk up to the junction. Please park on the right hand side of the Forestry road to ensure other cars can exit from the stage spectator area. Car Park E - From the A9 take the B847 towards Trinafour, car park E is at the start of the stage. Errochty car parks D and E will open at 08:00 on Saturday 16 October. Car parks D and E are for advance ticket holders and strictly subject to availability, will offer tickets for sale on the day 20 per adult. Children aged 15 or under go free. Next to Car Park E there is a campsite available from Friday 15 October onwards. Tickets for camping must be purchased separately from the campsite. Stages 9 & 11 Clashmore Car Park H The first of two stages in the Trossachs region. The action of day 2 is very condensed where stamina and concentration will be tested. Clashmore is a new stage, replacing Achray, and it is a cracker. It is 16km in length and more of a technical challenge than Achray. The start is very narrow with off-camber corners before the stage joins a new forest road that takes in part of the Loch Ard stage. The final two-thirds are very fast and the committed driver will make the most of this test. Where to watch The first location takes you into a very fast, narrow section that undulates over many crests. There is good viewing up on high banks to watch the committed crews looking to take the ultimate lines over these crests. The second location is around midway into the stage where the stage opens up onto a main haulage road so the speed increases further. The viewing here is through a fast left hand bend that is off camber with a fairly large ditch on the outside. How to get there and where to park From the spectator car parking areas on Forestry Commission-Scotland land there are two areas for excellent viewing. The car park is approached from the centre of Aberfoyle where you go over a narrow bridge just past the Forth Inn. There will be Police in attendance at this bridge to assist traffic and the turn off in to the forest is around 200 metres after this area. Once into the forest follow the marshals instructions to both locations. Car Park H will open at 05:40 on Sunday 17 October. Car Park H is for advance ticket holders and, strictly subject to availability, will offer tickets for sale on the day 20 per adult. Children aged 15 or under go free. Stages 10 & 12 Loch Ard Car Park I The longest stage in the rally and one of the longest tests in the UK at almost 30 kilometres, this is a monster of a stage. It is here that the rally could very easily be won or lost! The test features all types of terrain from flat out sections over crests, to tight hairpins as you descend back down the hill. Much of the route has been clear felled by the Forestry Commission and the cars can be viewed for long distances through the many twists and turns. Loch Ard Forest is part of the Lomond & Trossachs National Park, Scotland s first National Park, with the status being granted by the Scottish Government in Eurosport s TV cameras will be transmitting both runnings of this stage on live TV. Guy Wilks says: This is a belter of a stage! The road is built-up at the start, with big ditches either side, and it s very fast and flowing. With trees set well back, the road is lined with heather, fern and bracken and there are some beautiful sections of road where you just fly. The stage is quite long, there are a lot of surface and road width changes and it feels like there is everything here rolled up into one stage including a spectacular downhill section with a lot of hairpins. It s a difficult stage and a real sting in the tail, as David Bogie found out, when he crashed out on the final stage here last year Where to watch The spectator car park gives you the opportunity to park by the aqueduct and to view the action on the special stage. For those who wish to catch the fresh air and get a bit closer to the cars, the viewing of the stage stretches for over 600m, over fast crests into a junction right. This location is approximately halfway through the longest stage of the event and you will get an indication of who is gaining on whom on this mammoth test. For those prepare to venture further, two additional viewing areas will available to walk into. How to get there and where to park From the A84 out of Stirling, turn left onto the A873, signposted Aberfoyle. Turn right at the roundabout into Aberfoyle. Once in the town continue on the B829, signposted Milton and Kinlochard. Drive west approximately 1 mile to Milton. Turn left and follow the Rally of Scotland spectator arrows which will direct you through ticket check points on to the un-surfaced Forestry Commission Scotland road that will take you approximately 3 miles to the aqueduct. Please park on the right hand side as directed, leaving space to allow other cars past. This is a two-way system through the forest and you will exit back onto the public road at Milton. A strict 15mph speed limit will be enforced on Forestry roads. Loch Ard Car Park I will open at 05:00 on Sunday 17 October. There will be limited disabled parking. There will be NO spectator viewing opportunities on B829 beyond Milton. Car Park I is for advance ticket holders and, strictly subject to availability, will offer tickets for sale on the day 20 per adult. Children aged 15 or under go free. Perth Service Park This year the Rally of Scotland Service Park is based at Perth Airport (postcode PH2 6NP), close to Scone Palace. The service area itself occupies one of the runways and there is ample public car parking (including limited disabled parking on a strictly first come, first served basis), entertainment, trade stands and catering available, as well as the Rally of Scotland ticket office. Entry to the public is free of charge, making this an ideal place to begin your enjoyment of this year s event. The Service Park is where the teams get the opportunity to set up the cars for the action on Saturday and Sunday and is an ideal place to get close to the rally stars and fill the official programme with the autographs of the top names. The cars return to the Airport on Friday evening after the Scone stage to enter Parc Ferme where they will remain till the 10 minute service first thing on Saturday morning. There will be 3 service halts at the Perth Service Park on Saturday (06.19, and 18.45) and one on Sunday (06.40). How to get there and where to park Follow the A989 out of Perth, at the traffic lights branch left onto the A85, signposted Blairgowrie & Coupar Angus, then turn left at the next traffic lights onto the A93, signposted Blairgowrie & Coupar Angus. At the traffic lights bear right onto the A94 towards Coupar Angus and Perth Airport. The public entrance is 600m after the main entrance to the airport, follow the Rally of Scotland signs. Parking is right next to the service area. Page 4
