3 The PAGB Inter-Federation Projected Image Competition and Exhibition PAGB President Peter W Cheetham APAGB Alliance Competitions Administrative Officer Daphne Hanson CPAGB APAGB Organising Federation Scottish Photographic Federation Competition Organiser Peter Paterson EFIAP FRPS MPAGB Foreword by the President of the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain This competition continues to evolve from the days of slides, as this year, the 2 nd only as Digital Images has a separate Natural History Section. This has increased the number of images from each Federation and will give a better exhibition. The competition organisation this year moves north of the border to the Scottish Photographic Federation and our thanks go to Peter Paterson ARPS MPAGB FIAP and his team for their hard work in advance, on the day and for producing the results afterwards. This competition we have 4 judges involved, David Gibbins ARPS APAGB AFIAP, Malcolm Kus ARPS DPAGB EFIAP/b, Tony Potter ARPS DPAGB APAGB EFIAP and Rod Wheelans FRPS MPAGB HonPAGB MFIAP. The Open and Nature sections will be judged by 3 judges of the above. We have included an experienced nature judge on that panel. Our thanks go to them all for their time and expertise in judging the competition and making an exhibition. Our congratulations go to The Lancashire & Cheshire Photographic Union for winning both the Open and Nature Sections and to the individual awards which you will listed elsewhere in the catalogue. The PAGB must thank Daphne Hanson CPAGB APAGB, our Competition Administration Officer and Gordon Jenkins APAGB for their work on this competition. I look forward to seeing the Exhibition. 5 Meet The Judges Rod Wheelans MPAGB FRPS MFIAP HonPAGB My Dad won a working toy camera at a fair when I was 6 or 7. I loved it but I didn't become a serious photographer until I was 12. Becoming a member of Dumfries CC in 1983, I have twice served as their President. I have served on the SPF Executive for more than 25 years, including as President. Since joining the PAGB Executive in 1990, I have organised and chaired the Inter-Club Print Championship, GB Cup, and Awards for Photographic Merit, serving as President I am currently a member of the RPS Professional & Applied Panel, having previously been a member of the A and F Panels for Visual Art and Photo Travel. Although I am winding down as successful professional photographer, I have never lost my amateur roots, competing and exhibiting widely, accruing many thousands of acceptances and several hundred Awards in National and International exhibitions. Nowadays I tend to pick and choose the exhibitions I enter usually the more difficult ones! Tony Potter ARPS DPAGB EFIAP I am founder member of West Cumbria Photo Group, been taking pictures since I was a teenager (many years ago). Enjoy all aspects of photography, but mono prints are my special interest. Enjoy the international side of photography, both by travelling and International salons. Have been involved with the PSA over the last few years and serve on the RPS L panels. David Gibbins ARPS AFIAP APAGB BPE3* For the last 30 years photography has been a hobby that acted as a release mechanism to the stresses of work. It is not just taking pictures, I get even more enjoyment from the camaraderie of being a member of Beeston CC, and visiting Clubs as a Judge and Speaker. For the last 25 years I have served on the Executive of N&EMPF. This has been extremely rewarding, serving as President in and recently in During my time on the N&EMPF Executive I have held a number of positions and in 2010 became a PAGB Executive Member. Without doubt my proudest moment in photography was being awarded the APAGB for services to Photography. Judging gives me my greatest personal satisfaction, It can be a challenge but at the same time I feel honoured to be invited to comment on somebody else s work and hopefully provide positive encouragement. I have been a photographic judge since 1983, graduating through the N&EMPF senior list to the PAGB List. Malcolm Kus ARPS, DPAGB, EFIAP/b When I did my fi rst judging at a local club in the Midlands in 1989, I had no idea where the judging pathway would take me. Over the years I have been privileged to have judged at numerous clubs and been a Selector at many national and international exhibitions. Until 2008 I was on the MCPF main list. When I moved to Northumberland, I joined the NCPF judges list. For many years I have judged for the PAGB and more recently for the RPS as an Assessor on the L Panels. Being asked to be one of the judges on the Inter-Federation Nature PDI this year was an honour and privilege. Nature photography has always been one of my favourite subjects and I knew the standard would be very high, since each Federation pre-selects their entry. I was not disappointed. 5

Bird photography featured highly in the Nature Section, but there was a good range of other work that was reflected in the awards. Congratulations to all the entrants and winners. The fi ve hard working Scottish Federation workers made sure the judging ran very smoothly and the calibration of their projector guaranteed that all images were shown at their very best. Best Open How Low Can you Go? The decisive moment capturing a peak of action! The background, although diffused by the fumes from a heavy pipe smoker, is still interesting. We particularly liked the kids using their phone cameras. Rod Wheelans Selector s Choice Open - Better than Mine - Humour gets a raw deal often in competitions so I was delighted to give this my award. The details are perfect. The empty cup, the fag end and the "Keep Fit" headline and the gentle desaturation of the background helps. Tony Potter s Selector s Choice Open - Life Underground - With its mute colour and feel, the daily trail of life on the tube comes over well. Almost a do not disturb feeling. Well seen and taken - An observation not an intrusion. David Gibbins Selector s Choice Open - Helicopter Rescue The viewpoint really made this into a dramatic image and documented the environment and challenges faced by the emergency services. Best Nature - Little Owl Running - is an excellent image that has been captured so well, pin sharp and the depth of fi eld has been used so well to put the background out of focus. The author has caught the action extremely well. Tony Potter s Selector s Choice Nature - Common Frogs - The composition of the picture of the frogs is great. Not only a piece of natural history seeing, but I also get a sense of fun and enjoyment with a touch of jealousy. David Gibbins Selector s Choice Nature - Gentoo Penguin at Nest - A quality image illustrating the penguin and the habitat Malcolm s Selector s Choice Nature - Yellow Billed Oxpecker - I really like how the photographer has managed to get in so close to the subject, a delightful piece of Nature photography that has been well composed and is of the highest standard. 8

Although the Judging went extremely smoothly, the production of both shows and catalogue were unfortunately hampered by illness. Our sincere apologies for these delays. Firstly, we would like to thank our Judges who made our job over the Judging weekend very easy, Rod Wheelans, Malcolm Kus, David Gibbins and Tony Potter. They made an excellent selection of images for us to make up the two shows. Enormous thanks goes to Daphne Hanson who kept us right on all of the details; she had an inordinate number of queries to answer due to the delays to the shows and this catalogue.. thank you! Thanks also to Gordon Jenkins for his help with the advertisers. To all our sponsors and advertisers for their generosity a very big thank you. Thanks also to all of the Federation Offi cers for all their help in getting the images to us for the fi rst PAGB Inter Federation Competition to have both Nature and Open sections. To the various members of the Scottish PF for all their help during this project; in particular to Ian Newton and Bill Barr, who helped compile the two shows even though hampered by illness. Thanks also to Edinburgh PS for the use of their premises for the Judging weekend.
