Cycle around Eye, or ride the Millers Trail to discover traditional villages. Explore a Victorian station then stroll along a former railway line at Clare Castle Country Park. Walk at Thornham, or watch birds on the River Deben. Swing through the trees on the high ropes course, let the kids run free on the adventure playground, then get lost in the maze at High Lodge Forest Centre. Bring your binoculars and you might spot a hobby flying over the reeds at Lakenheath Fen. Look for dragonflies at award-winning Needham Lake. Enjoy fishing in beautiful rural surroundings, play a round of golf, or ride horseback along bridleways and forest tracks. Hire a rowing boat at Brandon. Take a river trip on the Orwell Lady past the bustle of Ipswich docks to the peaceful Orwell Estuary. Watch an Anglo-Saxon wood cutter at work at West Stow or take your little ones to meet the lambs at Baylham Rare Breeds Farm. Pack a picnic and relax by award-winning floral displays in Bury St Edmunds Abbey Gardens, or find a shady spot under the trees at Nowton Park. With lakes and rivers reflecting big skies familiar from Constable s masterpieces; golden fields edged with wild flowers; and heathland, fens and forests full of wildlife, it s no wonder that people choose Suffolk as a place to enjoy the great outdoors. Escape to west Suffolk and the strange and beautiful landscape of the Brecks. Once covered with heather, grasses, gorse and bracken, many acres are now planted with pine trees, while the remaining stretches of heathland are vital habitats for wildlife such as the rare stone curlew and woodlark. Explore the beautiful River Waveney, bordering Norfolk, and find the largest remaining river valley fen in England. From the source of the Stour in Mildenhall, follow the river as it threads its way along Suffolk s southern border through Clare, Long Melford and Sudbury to Dedham and beyond. Between these rivers, find a rural landscape dotted with hamlets, medieval villages, small towns, historic churches and ancient woodland. Some of the very first English villages were created here by Anglo Saxon settlers. Explore the coast with its shingle beaches, seaside towns and fishing boats. Just behind the coastline discover the rich birdlife of forest, farmland and heathland in a land intersected by estuaries and salt marshes, home to waders and wildfowl. Owner, Mary Bruce says, We are lucky to be in the same village as Earl Stonham Farms who produce Wagyu cattle. These animals eat a top-quality diet of natural ingredients and the delicious beef is in high demand from top restaurants. When they asked if we would like to have our kitchen muster up some Wagyu burgers we jumped at the chance. It s essential to pre-order as the burgers are not always available. The brewing vessels are right beside the bar at Old Cannon Brewery in Bury St Edmunds so enjoy a pint of ale whilst watching the next brew in the making! The kitchen has a reputation for serving the bounty of the county and beer is an ingredient in many favourite dishes. There s a hot and smoky menu at the Chilli Farm, Smokehouse and Deli at Mendlesham with farm-smoked meats, cheeses and even chilli hot chocolate. Find farm-reared lamb hotpot on the menu in the café restaurant at Elveden Estate, or take home a pot of hand made chutney with a twist of something special.
