1 LONG EATON 50 PLUS FORUM WINTER ISSUE 2016 Report on our December 2016 Open Forum Meeting eld at 10:15 am on December 12 th at the Long Eaton Town Hall Theme for the event :- Environment Editor Ian Neill Website CHAIR S REPORT Youth Forum A new aspect of our work started in December with an invite to join our local Erewash Borough Council Youth Forum for one of their gatherings. This meeting was held at Friesland School. Three members of our management committee joined small groups of Year 9 pupils from various local schools to engage in discussions around the theme of Housing. The morning was well organised by Suzanne Gorman and Colin Handley and we were all impressed with the children s contributions. We hope to get involved again in the New Year probably opening up the invitation to more of our forum members to join us for discussions of a topic which is of interest to both age groups involved. Any ideas or thoughts you have would be appreciated. Computer Groups Our outreach continues to thrive both at Long Eaton Library and at the Adult Education Centre on Derby Road. Crucially Roy has built up a very good group of Volunteer IT Tutors. Our work is highly regarded by Loughborough University and the East Midlands Later Life Forum, and Roy Smith, our ECP, was asked to give a presentation about our programme at a conference held on Friday, November 25 th, The theme was The Digital Divide and Older Speakers Theme Page 1 &2 Page 1 Page 2 Page 3 Page 4 Page 5 Page 5 Page 6 Page 6 Page 7 Page 8 Page 8 NEXT MEETING March 13 TH :15 TO 12:00 Noon TOWN HALL LONG EATON Adam Reddish Stanton Regeneration IN THIS ISSUE Chair s Report Raffle Wave presentation Chatsworth Centre Speaker: Erewash CVS advert Charity Ads Peterborough Station Information Llandudno Nene Valley Railway Trip info Travel Club News Free courses Computer Courses FOOD BANK BOX WILL BE AVAILABLE Raffle made & The separate raffle for the hamper made 49,5 Thanks to Marion and Jenny who ran it and all those who contributed, both financially and prizes. 2 Winter 2016 ISSUE Page 2 Editor Ian Neill People Addressing the challenges for local government. His presentation was well received and generated a lot of interest. We are also exploring ways of improving links with the Lacemaker Court Development with an encouraging meeting on Thursday Dec 15 th. John Robinson, Community Liaison Officer at Long Eaton ASDA has also offered us the use of their community room and some possible funding assistance. September Coach Trip Since our last Open Forum, we had an enjoyable 2-coach visit to the Lancashire town of Bury and to the nearby East Lancs Railway. A super day out. We were charmed by the friendliness of the railway staff and enchanted by the Transport Museum in Bury which brought back many fond memories to our members. Toton Sidings Remembered Our Toton project was given the green light in October by the Heritage Lottery Fund who approved our bid for nearly 10,000. We want more people to become aware of how important the sidings were in our district. We will mount an exhibition at The Erewash Museum in Ilkeston from May 25 th 2017 which will last into July with 2 Open Saturdays. We have the enthusiastic support of railway archivists Brian Amos and Phil Burton and the expertise and experience of the current museum staff led by Helen Martinez. A BR style poster showing how the sidings were laid out has been commissioned and will be carried out by a specialist poster artist, Steven Millership. After the exhibition, we hope to visit some local schools with a workshop day featuring the railway sidings but also widening the topic to more general railway themes including HS2. Hopefully some of our forum members will volunteer their services! In addition, meeting some of the many local people who worked at Toton particularly in steam days promises to be an enjoyable part of the project We have contacted DB Cargo UK but with their current agenda of cutbacks, our project is well down their list of priorities at the moment! Our dream outcome with them would be the naming of a Class 66 Locomotive in 2017 to link with the museum exhibition. The Forum Meeting Report WAVE Film Show For our December 2016 Open Forum, we invited Wyvern Amateur Video Enthusiasts to put on a show for us. For the small fee of 30.00, the team screened a selection of short films from their collection. The films were mostly taken on 16 mm by local amateur photographer, J.H.Poyser. The films were introduced by the club secretary, Pat Adcock. The films chosen included Co-Op House Building, Herburger Brooks (piano keyboard manufacturer) and priceless footage of Long Eaton Carnivals. These archive films have been digitalised and edited with added titles, commentary and music by the WAVE Society. The society meets regularly and are always keen to welcome new members. If you would like to join WAVE, contact Pat Adcock on You can also contact the club using their website at IF YOU HAVE ANY SUITABLE PRIZE FOR OUR RAFFLE PLEASE BRING IT ALONG TO THE NEXT MEETING

3 Winter 2016 ISSUE Page 3 Editor Ian Neill Chatsworth Centre The film show was followed by an enthusiastic presentation on the Chatsworth Centre by its Chair, Mike Beedham. The Chatsworth Art Centre was produced by a conversion of a Methodist Church and was opened in January Since the Centre s tragic fire in 2003 which devastated the site, rebuilding of the Duchess Theatre was achieved with an enormous amount of support from local government, businesses and generous member donations. Between 2003 and 2010, the Duchess Theatre was completely rebuilt at a cost of around 250,000 and featuring a new layout with a new stage, foyer, dressing rooms and seating for performers and audiences alike to enjoy. After the incident, the Centre set up The Phoenix Fund to cope with its rush of public donations to restore the theatre to its former glory, giving the Centre a recognised appreciation for its importance in the local community. Leon Wade, current chairman of the Long Eaton and District Arts Council spoke of their support after the fire: That was the thing that brought me to tears more than anything the overwhelming support. The Duchess theatre officially reopened in September 2010 and now showcases a variety of theatre within its new multi-use facility designed for both performances and social events. The first show in the new theatre saw sixty performers from eight local societies take to the stage together to perform in a fantastic musical gala performance The Theatre Story. Since then, the theatre has continued to grow, with its improved facilities opening new opportunities to accommodate for increasing audiences and visitors. Events include tea dances, tribute bands, jazz nights and the popular Brass Band Concert. For more details and book tickets, see the website at Performing groups of various kinds are currently queuing to get a slot at the Centre for their productions. Mike explained that the running of their show nights relied heavily on volunteer support. He would love to hear from any members willing to give even just one evening a month to make coffee, sell ice cream, etc. The Centre holds coffee mornings at the theatre on Saturday mornings from where you can ask to join the volunteers, buy tickets or just enjoy a coffee! You can find out more about the block paver offer where you can have your name in stone as part of the Landscaping Project. Erewash Voluntary Action are organising Volunteer Passport training. A course for people volunteering with adults begins on Tuesday 28 February for 5 weeks at Erewash Voluntary Action Granville Avenue Long Eaton from PM A Children and Young People Volunteer Passport course starts on Wednesday 1 March at Cotmanhay Children s Centre from 9.30 am 12 Noon for 5 weeks.
