1 waterway recovery group (north west news) Dear Northwester NATIONAL CO-ORDINATING BODY FOR VOLUNTARY LABOUR ON THE INLAND WATERWAYS OF BRITAIN 02 September 2011 Please accept my apologies for the lateness of this Newsletter I have included some details of the October dig in case I do not get another Newsletter done before the date of the dig. Next Time Out - Kendal Torchlight AND Lancaster Canal Dig 09/12 September 2011 The main work will be to dismantle and rebuild the parapet wall of Stainton Crossing Bridge (the current end of the wet bit, where we parked last year to work on the Sellet Hall Bridge) having removed a tree stump that s growing out of it. Weather permitting; we will also be working under Stainton aqueduct, where the stream below has scoured away parts of the walls and footpath. On Friday night, we will be taking part in the Kendal Torchlight procession on a joint float with Lancaster Canal Trust. If you are planning to take part in this, please bring a clean WRG shirt if you have one (probably means fairly clean in terms of the logo as well ) If you don t have one and would like one, I have a few so could lend them out if you want. Accommodation is booked at the Borwick & Priest Hutton Village Hall from midday on Friday to midday on Monday, so there ll be a slight change to the routine for those arriving early or staying late. On Friday, please go straight to the site. We ll be finishing earlyish to ensure we have time to get into Kendal to take part in the torchlight parade. There is a large car park at the hall, so plenty of room for camper vans. If you re arriving at the normal time on Friday, and will be too late to get to Kendal, Paul will ensure there is someone at the hall to let you in. On Monday, we will need to clear the hall before going to site, and lunch will be at site if you want it. If you are coming, especially if you re here on Friday or Monday, can you let Paul Shaw know (paul_shaw@lineone.net) roughly what time you intend to arrive/depart. Some of you have already told Paul that you are happy to work on the Friday and/or Monday, as well as the normal Saturday and Sunday, so thank you for that. It means we have enough people to make the long weekend a viable proposition. Please note there isn t a pub in the village, so you're probably best bringing your own drinks. Please see the directions to the accommodation and site on page 4. Lichfield Joint with London October 2011 This is a joint dig with London as yet I do not know what the work involves will investigate and send a one off e- mail with this information or contact Helen ( ; helen_gardner@hotmail.com) for more information. Please contact Helen to book and let her know of any dietary requirements by SUNDAY EVENING 25 SEPTEMBER at the latest. The accommodation is at Chase Terrace Scouts Hall, Ironstone Road, Chase Terrace, Burntwood, WS7 1LL see page 5 for directions. Proposed Piccadilly Boat Rally 2012 It is proposed the rally will take place late May Bank Holiday Weekend A small local rally aimed at local boaters and the public. This will be a dry run rally in the location to enable a much larger event to commemorate the 40 th anniversary of the Cheshire Ring in More information will follow as and when available. Sales Past Events Neath sales were , Middlewich , Crumpsall , Burton 1, Friday at Burton was very quiet after the first rush. The Rota at Burton worked okay. Publicity Talks Helen s next one is November at Furness Vale Malcolm s 13 January 2012 at Castleton Helen is still trying to sort a date for MB&B (as the first one wasn t suitable)
2 Penguins or Paintings Do those of you who were at Burton remember the "Wanted, Green Penguins" sign? We had no offers, so does anyone have some to give away? (Penguin crime fiction in various types of green paperback cover) We always try to pass some on to Jerry Sanders for his efforts to find us a good spot at Nationals, but this year John Foley had none at all for him. Are they becoming scarce and valuable? Even tatty ones will do as Gerry is a keen collector. Also, we had some acrylic paintings at Burton, kindly donated by Paul Wixey. We sold three, and you may be interested to see the range of the artist, Barbara Russon's work by checking her name on the internet. She died a few years ago, she came from Wednesbury and did a lot of canal and industrial subject paintings. One of those shown on the website is one we have left. We also have a very strange painting of the Tar Tunnel at the Coalport Canal, where we did some work many years ago. Contact John Foley about either Penguins or Paintings - jfoley456@btinternet.com Update on the Chesterfield Canal Mike Chase would like to thank all north-westers who helped out on the camps on the Chesterfield this summer - Lynne and Maureen in the kitchen, John F, John H and George on site. We exceeded Geraint's expectations by almost completing the building of the upper wing walls of Staveley town Lock by the end of the first week, causing him a (good) headache as to what we would do for the second. For this, we mapped out and built the bulk of the paddle culverts, finished the walls, constructed shuttering, and on the final day poured the first stage of the backfill behind the new walls and shifted several tonnes of bricks from the brick mountain at Barrow Hill. I was also pleased to see that the canal grew by 0.3% (200m) last Thursday. If you log onto the Chesterfield website for pictures of the opening of Hollingwood Hub, extension of the navigable length and latest Staveley Basic pictures. The trust are looking forward to our next visit. IWA Campaign Festival on the Lancaster Canal at Preston August Bank Holiday August 2012 The IWA Campaign festival will be held on the Lancaster Canal at Preston next year, as part of the Preston Guild celebrations. it's on the August Bank Holiday weekend (25th -26th August). For further information please go to Trisha Buzzard, is asking for help she may need help setting up and running the event as well and as there is no National next year and if you need to get your fix of fencing, cable laying etc. this could be the ideal opportunity. Please reply directly to Trisha if you are able to help on pbuzzard@o2.co.uk The next Paper Chase will be on 24 September Waste Paper Sonoco have agreed to double the price to 60/tonne from October (when the GMWDA grant ceases). Dates were agreed for the first 3 months of 2012 (for the September/October newsletter). The next Ad Hoc will be Wednesday 12 October 2011 at Helen s 33 Victoria Road, Northwich, Cheshire, CW9 5RE at 7.30 p.m. Change of Addresses etc. I would be grateful if you would let me have any changes to addresses, telephone numbers, addresses and any additions to the central ing list. Please telephone or poppyscarfe@talktalk.net Many thanks Maureen.

4 Lancaster 09/12 September - Borwick & Priest Hutton Village Hall Borwick Lane Priest Hutton Nr Carnforth LA6 1JP Grid ref SD Directions to the Accommodation From the M6, come off at Junction 35 and turn left at the roundabout towards Carnforth/Morecambe (A601(M). At the next roundabout, turn right following the signs for Milnthorpe (A6). At the following roundabout, bear right towards Burton-in-Kendal (A6070). Cross the motorway and canal (Tewitfeild locks on your left), pass the Longlands Hotel on the right, and after about half a mile turn right (signed Priest Hutton). Follow the road through the village towards Borwick, and the hall is on the right, on the inside of a bend to the right. NB. If you use SatNav, the postcode will take you to the centre of the village, so when you get there make sure you then follow signs to Borwick. Directions to Site The work site is on: Viver Lane, Stainton, nr Kendal LA8 0LG Grid ref SD NB. If you were on this site last year, the directions are slightly different. This will ensure that you can get to the car parking area without going across the bridge, which will be closed to traffic. From the M6, come off at J36, turn right then left onto the A65 towards Endmoor. ** After 3.2 miles, turn left towards Stainton. The site is approximately 1 1/4 miles from this junction, with the car park on the left just before crossing the canal. Directions from Accommodation to Site Turn left out of the hall, through Priest Hutton Village. At the t-junction, turn right. Follow the A6070 through Burtonin-Kendal to the roundabout. Straight across onto the A65, then follow as from ** above. Directions from site to accommodation From the car park by the canal, turn right and return to the A65. Turn right, and follow the road to the roundabout. Straight across towards Burton-in Kendal (A6070). Approximately 1.3 miles after leaving Burton-in Kendal, turn left to Priest Hutton, then follow the road through to Borwick, and the hall is on the right, on the inside of a bend to the right.
5 Lichfield Joint with London 01/02 October - 1st Chase Terrace Scout Hut # Ironstone Road Chase Terrace Burntwood WS7 1LL The best route to Burntwood from the NW is probably M6 -> A5, turning left, towards Lichfield onto the A461 at Muckley Corner. Then turn left again onto the A5190 at lights in about 1½ miles. The roundabout above the R of Burntwood is about another 1½ miles. Ignore the arrow (which marks the Burntwood scout hut at which we have also stayed) and continue to the second roundabout (where the A5190 heads down towards Chasewater). Don t follow it but take the yellow (Cannock) road. Ironstone Road is then the 5 th on the right (about ¼ mile) and the scout hut is about the same distance again on the left (roughly where the # is, just off the top of the map).
