1 POPULATION DATA FOR MILK MARKETING AREAS UNDER FEDERAL ORDERS by Shirley Flood and Eugene Krueger Program Analysis Branch Dairy Division Agricultural Marketing Service U.S. Department of Agriculture Program Analysis Report 81-1 October 6, 1981

2 INTRODUCTION Federal. milk marketing orders define marketing areas within which milk sales are regulated. Considerable data are collected and disseminated by market administrators relating to milk receipts and utilization in their individual marketing areas. This publication provides background information on marketing area populations that can be used in analyzing such Federal order statistical material. Population in Federal milk marketing areas is reported for 1970 and 1980 based on the 1980 United States Census. Also reported is the population within each political subdivision in a particular marketing area. It should be particularly noted that both the 1970 and 1980 numbers reflect the marketing areas as they were defined on December 31, The 1970 data do not represent the population in the marketing areas as they existed in Consequently, the 1970 data as presented in this report allow comparison of changes in the population of the current marketing area over the 10-year period. Table 1 reports the total population by marketing areas and for all markets combined. The numbers in this table, as well as in Table 2, are based on data contained in Advance Reports: 1980 Census of Population and Housing, PHC80-V-(numbered 2 through 52 for each State and the District of Columbia), Bureau of the Census, U.S. Department of Commerce. These data may be subject to further revisions by the Census Bureau, but large changes are not expected. Table 2 lists the population in each State, county, and local subdivision within each marketing area. The totals of these political subdivisions form the basis for our calculations of the population for each marketing area. In some cases, population within a particular subdivision of the marketing area had to be estimated since the boundaries of the subdivision did not conform precisely to the political subdivisions listed in the Census reports. Additional minor discrepancies also may have occurred in the case where boundaries of political subdivisions may have changed after a marketing area was defined. This report continues a series of population reports published by the Dairy Division following the release of data gathered during the decennial U.S. Census. The previous bulletin carried in this series was Population Data for Milk Marketing Areas Under Federal Orders, AMS-554, March 1973.
