3 Attractions Gilpin s Falls Covered Bridge This beautiful, 119 foot long arch type bridge was built in 1860 and spans the Northeast Creek located beside Maryland Route 272 north. It once spanned the stream to allow horses, wagons, and their riders to reach a mill that was on the other side. Historic Little Wedding Chapel A charming chapel housed in a 200 year old building. CECILTON In its early years Cecilton began as a crossroads, and is located in the southern part of the County between the Bohemia River and Sassafras River. The Cecilton area is home to several exquisite manor homes and colonial estates, and rich farmland still surrounds the town today. Just outside town visit beautiful Mt. Harmon Plantation for a tour of the house, colonial kitchen, and grounds CHESAPEAKE CITY Once known as the Village of Bohemia, this town developed with the creation of the C&D Canal. As shipping traffic ensued, houses and businesses sprang up alongshore. Today the picturesque tourist destination has a colorful 1800s flair, with charming inns, shops, a museum, and waterfront eateries. Ships and pleasure boats from around the globe still pass through the canal and under the majestic bridge NORTH EAST The Northeast River played a significant role in the early years of the town. Mills were built, and farmers and fishermen prospered. St. Mary Anne s church (c. 1700s) has one of the oldest graveyards in the state. Today you will find an abundance of antique and gift shops, a wide array of wonderful restaurants, a waterfront park, basket weaving, family friendly events, and Upper Bay Museum PORT DEPOSIT In the 1800 s this town was an importantport and banking center. Today it is a charming, historical town on the Susque-hanna River with beautiful architecture, a river walk promenade, popular restaurants, boating and fishing. The entire town is on the National Register of Historic places. Visitors are welcome to go back in history through a cell phone tour, stroll along Main Street, and enjoy scenic vistas CHARLESTOWN Chartered in 1742 on the banks of the North East River, the historic district has restored inns and private homes from the 1700s. Initially the primary seaport for MD and southern PA, a stone wharf now serves anglers and boaters. Visitors can arrive at the fine restaurants and marinas by car or by boat, and the last remaining historic Ice House on the entire Chesapeake Bay stands on the waterfront ELKTON Because of its strategic location at the head of the Bay, it was once a shipping port and passenger transportation route, known then as Head of Elk. In the 20th Century it was known as a popular marriage destination. Today Elkton is the County Seat bustling with business activity, and home to the county s first active Arts & Entertainment District with shops, galleries, and more to see and do PERRYVILLE This town was built on the shores of the Susquehanna River, near a busy ferry landing and tavern that many famous colonial travelers, including George Washington, frequented. By the Civil War period, Perryville gained recognition as a staging area for northern troops and supplies. Today visitors can shop at Perryville Outlet Center, visit a historic site, dine, golf, or walk one of the town s attractive trails RISING SUN In the 1700s five wagon train routes met at this spot as frontier travelers passed through on their way west. A cluster of log homes then, today this community boasts a unique country zoo, friendly merchants, Civil War Weekend, and street festival. The town s fascinating history includes that of Nottingham Lots which were granted by William Penn. The new town museum hosts an array of artifacts and collectibles
