A14 Update EDITOR S COMMENT A lot of residents attended the recent A14 exhibition at the Memorial Centre. It was extremely informative and the Highways staff very helpful. The re-routed A14 will be open by Section 1, A1 Alconbury to Brampton Hut should be finished by mid 2019, and Section 2, A1/ A14 Brampton Hut to the east coast railway line at The Offords by the end of There will be some finishing beyond that, mainly the removal of the viaduct in Huntingdon. 1.5 billion is being paid by central government and 100 million pledged by local authorities, various county councils and enterprise partners over 25 years. The work has started already. There has been ecological and archaeological surveys to assess the ground conditions. Compounds are being constructed along the route for office areas and storage. There is one just as you come off the Buckden junction toward Brampton. Traffic noise on the new road is a concern. Along the entire route there will be a benefit to 3200 properties with noise reducing surfaces, but 75 will be adversely affected mainly near the Brampton interchange. Earth bunds will be built and there will be low noise surfacing. There will be very low noise surfacing adjacent to Brampton both on the A14 and the A1. It has been noted by the Highways agency that during construction one of the most annoying things is the constant beeping of the reversing vehicles. I read that although this annoyance can t be switched off there is a schedule to minimise turning and also that the construction will only take place 8am -6pm Mon to Sat. There will also be water spraying to suppress the dust. There will be traffic management on the A1 near Alconbury from November, but during the daytime all existing carriageways will be retained. I have been assured that the magnificent Oak Tree by the A1 cottages will be very well protected during the construction. I was informed that there has been more concern for this tree than anything else. The plan is to extract gravel from along side the construction areas adjacent to Brampton, and these shallow pits will be landscaped as lakes and wet land areas. The elevated section over the river between the Buckden junction and the Offords could look spectacular and should afford some great views. 4 We Will Remember Them TRIBUTE TO GEORGE GARNER George Garner was a Lance Corporal in the 1st Bn. Royal Berkshire Regiment (Princess Charlotte of Wales). 2nd Division. He was wounded on the Ancre, the final large British attack of the 1916 Battle of the Somme, and died of his wounds on the 16th November, aged 23. Born and resident at Brampton, a son of John, farm bailiff to Henry Cranfield, and Hannah Garner of "The Lodge, Brampton, he was a tailor, and enlisted in Huntingdon. He is buried in Couin British Cemetery, 19 miles SE of Arras. He is also remembered (with two siblings who died in infancy) on the memorial stone of his parent s grave in Brampton cemetery. His brother, Bert, survived active service in the war. Two other Brampton Garners served but were from a different branch of the family. A William Garner was a witness to Thomas Miller s will in 1681 and to two memoranda to it in Memorial Plaques THE BRAMPTON MEMORIAL The first memorial plaques have now been placed on the obelisk and are looking lovely. The obelisk was purchased by the Parish Council in response to a growing number of requests from Brampton residents for some form of memorial in addition to the usual headstones and plaques as there was insufficient space for additional rose bushes and benches in the cemetery. The new obelisk can hold eighty plaques which can include a photograph or image as well as a brief inscription. If you would like to enquire about prices and options for a memorial to a loved one, please contact the Parish Council office on THE Brampton MAGAZINE

Layton Crescent EIGHTH IN THE SERIES GIVING BACKGROUND TO BRAMPTON S STREET NAMES Charles Temple Layton was born in 1850 the son of Catherine and James Layton J.P. of Baldock. He attended Rugby School. He married Bertha Matilda Phipps, daughter of Reverend G. Phipps, in November 1877 at Husband s Bosworth. For a time he lived at The Croft, Mitcham, Surrey (which later was turned into flats, then a nurse s hostel, and was finally demolished in He came to the village in 1893 and lived at the Grange (he also had a residence, The Grove, in Yeovil). He was sometime treasurer of the Institute. He was a parish councillor from and, remarkably, Chairman for the same period. He was also a Justice of the Peace and Alderman of Huntingdon. His wife wrote The Way of the Cross and other Verses in He gifted Huntingdon the Catholic Church of St Michael the Archangel at New Town. A quote from The Tablet, 15th June 1901: The New Church, Built Through The Munificence Of Mr. C. Temple Layton... Pray for the good estate of Charles Temple Layton, founder of this church. He played cricket for Huntingdon. The score book pages for one match survive (from Cricket Archive) at King George V Playing Field, Huntingdon on 29th, 30th July 1891 Huntingdon v Oundle Rovers. Oundle won by an innings and 145 runs; (1st Innings: 5 wickets, declared at 326 runs in 89 overs). Huntingdon (all out for 70 in 41.3 overs) CTL first innings bowled Reade for 0. Huntingdon followed on (all out for 111 in 73.2 overs) CTL second innings bowled Reade for 0. He died here in November 1911 and was buried at Yeovil. Whoops! Last month s road, Woolley Close, was incorrectly stated to have been completed in 1980/1. It was actually later, the last houses being completed in NOVEMBER

Brampton Community Led Plan Your Community Led Plan is based on the feedback residents provided in the Village Survey and it is designed to encourage people to join in. Together, we can help to make our community more active, healthier and a happier place to live and make life a bit easier for those who are having a tough time. The Plan builds on activities currently available in the village and provides more opportunities to socialise, follow an interest and have fun! The aim is for existing organisations and new ones to work together. For example, the Community Library and the Internet Café will be available during the Befrienders Friday morning get-together. A number of residents have volunteered to manage and take part in the various groups, but we still need more volunteers! Can you give an hour or two a month to help in any of the groups? The more people we have the better things will work. If you want to help, even in a small way, telephone or the Parish Clerk (Telephone clerkbrampton.pc@gmail.com) The Community Centre Village Hub Good Neighbour Scheme Brampton Volunteer Force Befrienders Brampton Village Hub Information & Support Centre 6 Community Library Internet Café IT Mentoring & Support THE Brampton MAGAZINE

The Hub, based in the High Street Community Centre, will be a friendly, welcoming place to meet, offering refreshments and catering for a wide range of interests. Groups that are in place or under development are shown in the diagram above, but villagers will be encouraged to come forward with new ideas for developing the Hub. The organisations joining the Brampton Befrienders in the Hub are The Community Library will be open during a number of slots each week, with books being provided through a mix of donations and purchases from funds raised. Please drop any books you wish to donate into the Memorial Centre on the playing fields. Shelving has been ordered using funding provided by the Big Lottery Fund. Volunteer librarians will be recruited and trained prior to the library opening. Those who have already offered to help in the library will be contacted in the coming weeks. In addition, negotiations are taking place to establish strong links with Cambridgeshire County Council Libraries. There will be more news in the next Magazine. An Internet Café, containing computers and an ipad, with support available, will operate when the library is open. The Internet Café will also offer a bus pass renewal service on behalf of the County Council. The IT Mentoring & Support Group is up and running with lots of people, including beginners, signed up to receive training on various topics. There will be 3 slots a fortnight (details in the Brampton Magazine), one morning, one afternoon and one evening. A drop in and we will solve your computer problem service will be offered and villagers will also be able to use the Group s computers or tablet or bring their own. The Information & Support Centre will be in the Community Centre meeting room and be operated by trained volunteer Community Navigators. They will provide advice on where to get help and will support people in linking up to relevant services. They will also provide information on Village groups and events. The Information Centre is expected to open in the New Year. The Brampton Community Volunteer Force will do simple tasks such as offer to provide a lift to the shops when they do their shopping; do the shopping for those that cannot get out; pop in to make sure everything is ok and have a cup of tea and a chat; or help with administration. These are just a few examples that volunteers could provide, there are many more. Such tasks though simple may, for example, NOVEMBER

be sufficient to allow people to be discharged from hospital earlier than otherwise. Volunteers will be able to volunteer anything from an hour a month of their time and be able to choose from a list the tasks that they that they are happy to do. The aim is to begin recruiting by the New Year. The Community Led Survey identified a large number of people interested in joining a Timebank. However, it now appears that in general people are willing to help others but do not look for anything in return. It is proposed to harness this interest and involve these people in the Volunteer Force. The other proposals which received support in the village survey are covered below. The original Brampton Matters and Brampton Parish magazines have been successfully amalgamated and The Brampton Magazine is now issued and delivered monthly by volunteers to over 2000 Brampton residents. The magazine fulfils a vital role providing a shop window for all of the voluntary organisations in Brampton. The Events Group s first event, Picnic on the Green attracted around 25 families who came to join the fun. More recently, the village quiz was attended by over 60 people. Future projects include a Halloween Fancy Dress Party, Village Christmas Tree(s) and the Summer Fete. In the future the concept of an event will be outlined in The Brampton Magazine and volunteers will be invited to manage the production of that single event with support if required. The Community Bus Service Committee will promote the services currently operated by Huntingdonshire Association for Community Transport (HACT). These include Ring and Ride, a pre-bookable service offering pick up outside your house and drop off at a convenient point at destinations which include Peterborough, Huntingdon and St Neots. There is a 15 annual membership fee but travel is free for those with a County Council bus pass. The Committee plan to organise Day Trips and Luncheon Outings. The Brampton Walking Club The Bramblers caters for a range of levels of fitness offering healthy exercise in a sociable environment. The Club organise two walks a month ranging from four to six miles, with different venues each time. In addition there are the shorter, weekly village based Health Walks (about 45 minutes) led by trained leaders. Details of all walks are published in the The Brampton Magazine. 8 THE Brampton MAGAZINE

Brampton Cycling Club offers a social cycling club for mixed ability members where no one gets left behind or lost and cake, coffee, conversation, comradeship and cycling are equality important. The Club is registered with British Cycling Sky Ride Social program and has 22 registered members. For those with more serious intent the Club has 23 members registered with the Strava group. Details of rides are published on the Brampton Information Exchange Facebook page. 524 people indicated in the Community Survey that they were in favour of a small development of Affordable Housing for Brampton People. Huntingdonshire District Council policy is to prioritise the allocation of affordable housing to those in greatest need in the whole of Huntingdonshire not just Brampton. The most likely solution would be to identify an agricultural site outside, but close to the village boundary. Such land would not normally receive planning permission and have a lower value. A planning application, with the involvement of a Housing Association, could then be made under the Rural Exception Housing Scheme which allows the allocation of housing on that site to be to local people. The search for a suitable site is underway. The Parish, in partnership with Ely Diocese, has appointed a Secondary Schools Coordinator to work in in the Huntington area. This will include working in Brampton to help develop the youth club and youth work more generally but most of her time will be spent in schools. This role may include reviving something like the old Youth Forum but it could equally mean giving young people in the village a voice in a slightly different way. Brampton Parish Council is responsible for managing matters concerned with changing the Village Speed Limit and Village Parking. The Council is pushing to reduce the speed limit to 20 mph in the inner parts of the village plus Brampton Park. On the parking front the Parish Council are planning to carry out improvements to the small car park to the side of the shops. NOVEMBER

Going, Going Gone DEMOLITION AT BRAMPTON PARK I m sure a lot of you have heard noise from the concrete chomping machine working busily on Brampton Park (old RAF Brampton) turning all the demolished buildings into hardcore! The demolition started in July and most of the accommodation blocks have now gone as well as a lot of the office buildings. Only 2 of the military houses are to be knocked down. The rest of the existing housing is occupied by military families from RAF Wyton and will house more as Wyton expands next year. Some of the houses have been sublet and are occupied by civilian families: we welcome all these new residents to Brampton. It s nice to see some life returning to the base. The rest of the site, owned by local builder Campbell Buchanan has been given planning permission for over 600 new homes to be built over the next few years. Prior to the sale of Brampton Park, Tree Preservation Orders were put on a lot of the beautiful mature trees on the estate. Most of these trees are in tree belts located around the perimeter of the site. But there are many in small groups located amongst the now gone buildings. These have been carefully fenced off by the demolition agents, Mick George, I assume to protect them during the demolition work. Some mature specimens have sadly had to be felled to make way for road widening on the estate, mainly along Central Avenue. The old Park Lane entrance has been re-opened to allow residents access to the site during the construction. I have been told that this entrance will be moved slightly nearer the current Air Cadets building and trees have already been felled to make way for this. The old entrance by the roundabout will be re- modelled to become another way in. However after studying the latest plans for the new development including the layout of the new roads and positions of the houses it looks as if a number of these carefully fenced off mature trees that are located south of Central Avenue and west of Farendon Road have suddenly disappeared! The buildings have gone hopefully these trees are not next! 10 THE Brampton MAGAZINE

Brampton Village Primary School OCTOBER 2016 At the time of writing we are 5 weeks into the new term and all of the children are very settled in school. We have welcomed a number of new families and we now have 75 children in Reception as we have started growing. This is the first year of having 3 classes in a year group and over the next few years we anticipate that we could have over 600 children in the school. This is going to give us plenty of challenges! You may have noticed the work going on at the front of the school. The aim is to restore the brickwork on the Victorian building but it is taking longer than expected due to some unforeseen problems. We hope it will be completed soon. So far this term we have had our Harvest Festival and there are plans for different trips and visits later in the year. We will keep you updated on events but the latest information from the school is always available on our website which is Peter Allen Headteacher Term Dates Autumn term 2016 Monday 24th Friday 28th October Tuesday 20th December Half Term Last day of term Spring term 2017 Wednesday 4th January Monday 13th Friday 17th February Monday 20th February Friday 31st March Term starts - Children return Half Term Professional Day (staff training) Last day of term Summer term 2017 Tuesday 18th April Wednesday 19th April Monday 1st May Monday 29th May Friday 2nd June Monday 5th June Friday 21st July Professional Day (staff training) Term starts - Children return May Day Bank Holiday Half Term Professional Day (staff training) Last day of term NOVEMBER

Brampton Biodiversity Project GREAT RIVER OUSE In 2013/2014 a two year project began with the aim of providing a comprehensive description of the Parish its landscape, history and natural history by engaging people in the parish in the collection and collation of information. Despite having a highly modified landscape the Parish retains a remarkable series of habitats. During the course of the surveys a number of Hot Spots were identified. These have been described in individual reports. The River Great Ouse forms the major part of the south eastern boundary of Brampton Parish. It flows from the Bedfordshire/Buckinghamshire county border through Bedford, St Neots, Huntingdon, St Ives and on, via the Ouse Washes (an internationally important Special Area of Conservation) into the Wash. Bordering the river there are a number of other Parish Hot Spots, these are shown on the location map above. The river is relatively slow moving and has a rich flora and fauna. These include floating water plants such as Nuphar 12 THE Brampton MAGAZINE

lutea Yellow Water-lily, bank side vegetation with Phragmites australis Common Reed and a wide variety of animals. This bank side vegetation provides nesting habitat for species such as Reed Warbler Acrocephalus arundinaceus, a summer visitor from sub-saharan Africa. Otters inhabit the river. In summer dragonflies, damselflies and butterflies abound. Butterfies recorded include: Peacock; Small Toitoiseshell; Orange Tip; Brimstone; Meadow Brown; Speckled Wood; Green-veined White; Comma; Gatekeeper; Red Admiral and Painted Lady. Otters have become much more frequent in recent years. A survey report in 2007 stated From Brampton to Needingworth there were 8 new positive records, with 4 more of these on the Alconbury and Ellington Brooks, a huge increase on previous years. Within the Parish these included records in 2002 and 2007 on Alconbury near the Mill itself. In addition, a large, presumed male otter was photographed along Brampton Brook in 2014 During the biodiversity survey over 60 species of plants were recorded. Birds are also plentiful and at least 50 different species species have been recorded. Oystercatchers can often be heard in summer calling as they fly over. It is also one of the few localities where cuckoos can still be heard in spring. The meadows adjacent to the river are an important habitat. They include Portholme Meadow Site of Special Scientific Interest and Special Area of Conservation and a County Wildlife Site. It is always worth a walk along the riverside which forms part of the Ouse Valley Way. It is clear that the river valley is a major feature with abundant wildlife. 14 Farming For Wildlife HUNTINGDONSHIRE LOCAL GROUP Farming for wildlife is the topic of the illustrated talk to be given to the Wildlife Trust, Huntingdonshire Local Group, on Wednesday 9th November 2016 at 7.30pm at Brampton Memorial Hall, Thrapston Road, Brampton. Our presentation will be given by Nicholas Watts, who owns Vine House Farm in Lincolnshire. Vine House farm is a traditional arable farm in the Fens and has been passed down through the generations. Nicholas will tell us about the conservation measures he uses whilst farming in order to create and maintain a wide range of habitats and thereby encourage wildlife. Nicholas grows seed specifically for bird food and supplies direct to the public, benefiting the Wildlife Trusts with donations from his profits. In 2013 Nicholas was the winner of the RSPB Nature of Farming award. Anyone interested in wildlife is most welcome to attend. Booking for the talk is not necessary. Entrance charge 2.50 (accompanied children free). Please contact Tim on for further information. Part of the Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire. Registered Charity No: Brampton Tidy Village Group JOB WELL DONE! CAN YOU HELP? A big thank you to all of the 10 volunteers in the Tidy Village Group who did some great work along Thrapston Road, clearing the shared footpath/cycle way of overhanging vegetation. And also along West End and Buckden Road. More volunteers are needed. If you would like to volunteer to join a future Tidy Village Group working party please peter.downes@ cambridgeshire.gov.uk or john.morris@ huntingdonshire.gov.uk or phone or text Peter on THE Brampton MAGAZINE

Nature Watch THIS AUTUMN By October most of the visiting summer migrant birds will be well on their way to their winter quarters. But not all migrants have gone. Even though we are well into early winter there are still plenty of interesting animals about. Amongst these is the colourful Red Admiral butterfly. Also a migrant to Britain, it arrives in May and June from the near continent. It is plentiful between mid-august and early October when most of the adults emerge. October also sees the arrival of migrants from Scandinavia. In Brampton look out for Redwings and Fieldfares, sometimes known as Winter Thrushes. They tend to feed in hedgerows on berries and fruits in early winter, reverting to the ground when this resource is depleted. Here they feed on fallen fruit and soil invertebrates. More on this and other things to see in winter in future issues. Pat Doody, Chair Wildlife Trust Huntingdonshire Local Group. This photograph was taken along the River Great Ouse near River Lane at the end of September. Individuals finding a place to overwinter may stay, and even become active on warmer winter days, an increasing phenomenon in recent years. Also look out for one of the larger hoverflies, which feeds on ivy and may still be active in November. The picture is Myathropa florea common throughout Britain and frequently seen in gardens. It does not have a common name. Opening Times Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday Closed Last Collections Weekdays Saturday NOVEMBER

Brampton Languages Club NEW FOR BRAMPTON A group of language enthusiasts has met to see how we can help each other refresh our language skills and possibly learn new languages. We have decided to set up some informal conversation circles in the following languages: German, French, Spanish and Italian. We are also hoping that Russian might be added to this list. These conversation circles will meet in homes rather than community buildings and will give people of whatever level a chance to listen to and speak languages they thought they had forgotten. From time to time, all will be invited to a meeting where a wider topic of general language interest will be presented by one of our members. The next such meeting is on Monday, November 21st at 8.00 p.m. at the Memorial Centre on Thrapston Road and the topic will be Exploring Language families. We are also hoping to provide opportunities for residents who are not native speakers of English with the chance to improve their skills so if that applies to you, please get in touch. All this is to be done on a voluntary basis no fees, no exams, no testing! If you are interested in getting involved, please contact the Languages Club Coordinator, Peter Downes by to peterdownes42@aol.co.uk. 16 THE Brampton MAGAZINE

The Bramblers BRAMPTON WALKING CLUB I can report on three walks done since the last magazine entry Thrapston Lakes/Titchmarsh Nature Reserve/ Aldwincle, Grafham and Fineshade Woods. 19 Police and Crime Plan REPORT FROM THE COMMISSIONER One of my roles as Police and Crime Commissioner is to produce a Police and Crime Plan for the county. The Plan must set out the objectives which I expect the Chief Constable to deliver. When I was elected in May 2016, I knew I wanted to develop a Plan that looked afresh at the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. It was clear to me that we would need to continue to transform the way we work, thinking innovatively and collaborating with others to provide the public with an effective, joined up service. I therefore decided to take some time to get to know the business in order to prepare a Plan that addressed the key issues, was easily understandable and provided clear direction to Cambridgeshire Constabulary and others about what needs to be done. Along with my Deputy, Andy Coles, I have spent the last few weeks talking to as many people as possible to better understand your views and help shape the content of the Plan. A draft framework of my Plan is now available for you to view on my website and I would be very grateful if you could take a moment to complete a short survey. Your responses will help me understand what matters to you in terms of keeping our communities safe. You can find the survey by clicking below Paying too much for your energy bills? Contact Cambridge & District Citizens Advice for help! We are running a Big Energy Saving Week campaign to help people cut their fuel bills and get all the financial support they are entitled to. The campaign runs from 31st October to 4th November. 20 Never Look At A Shop Front BRAMPTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY, BRIAN GEBBELS, CHAIRMAN Never look at a shop front if you want to establish during which historical period the building originated! Such were the opening words of Mr Bill Templeton as his introduction to the September bi-monthly talk to the Brampton Historical Society (BHS) held, as usual, in the Stocker Room of the Brampton Institute. Again, a packed room awaiting eagerly in anticipation of Bill s talk we were not disappointed. His opening remarks set the scene for the meeting entitled the High Street of Huntingdon His initial reference to shop fronts highlighted the fact that we all busily walk along the High Street looking at names such as Poundshop ; Santander Bank ; Bon Marche without looking up to the roof line where the true character of the building can be found. Bill s talk commenced with showing us a copy of the town map drawn by the 17th century cartographer, John Speed, and then proceeded starting from Godmanchester Bridge. This bridge is considered to be of Roman origin. The question was asked as to why the Romans would build on the flat part of the area; the answer being the River Ouse. The river was used to transport provisions for the army and the defensive castle was not built until later date unknown, however, we know that Henry 2nd destroyed whatever remained. The Bridge Hotel was originally a bank and had the authority to print banknotes, now they just take them!! Not really the main subject however, but Bill then took us on a tour from the Bridge up the High Street showing details of all the different styles of housing, stressing that the roofs gave the clue to their origin. Churches received a special mention there being 16 originally of which only four now remain! I do not think that there is a need to relate all the different architectural styles, suffice to say that Huntingdon is full of history if only we were aware of it and that is how the BHS serves the community. However, Bill did mention, in particular the Falcon Pub, as we all know, recently restored and re-opened. Originally a 16th century Coaching Inn and purported to be the site of Oliver Cromwell s recruiting station and its gates from the Market Square were once the entrance to the Huntingdon prison, another prison in St Peter s Road was also mentioned. Apart from Oliver Cromwell, another personality of the era was William Cowper, poet and hymnodist who stayed in Huntingdon for a short while. I said earlier that we all walk around the town oblivious of all that is around! Did you know that the War Memorial in the centre of the square was commissioned as the result of the local Women s Institute s determination to remember all those who fell or were injured in the First World War? The leading protago- 20 THE Brampton MAGAZINE

nist being Kathleen, Lady Scott, wife of the famous Scott of the Antarctic and the sculptress. Another snippet, why do you think that there is not a statue of Oliver Cromwell in Huntingdon?? For whatever reason, Cromwell was not liked by the Huntingdon populace but St Ives did, hence St Ives has a statue of him. I cannot quite remember the detail but Bill said that, many years ago, a graveyard of one of the old churches was dug up and the soil used as foundation for the subsequent building of houses. He said that he was digging in his garden and lo and behold he unearthed what proved to be human bones!! So if you live in Huntingdon you never know what may lay in your garden!! Well, another interesting and informative talk and as a result, mooching along the Huntingdon High Street will, for me, and hopefully our readers, never be the same. The next meeting of BHS is on Wednesday 23rd November and the title of the talk is: The Wise and Unwise Women of the Fens! Look forward to seeing you. A Macmillan Thank-you I would like to thank everyone who came along to the Macmillan Coffee Morning held at my house on 30 Sept. And also to those who couldn t make it but kindly madea donation. We raised 278. A fantastic amount of money raised in a very short time. Many thanks, Marie Shepperson November Bulletin CAMBS FIRE AND RESCUE SERVICE Fireworks and bonfires can be plenty of fun for all the family. The fire service highly recommends going to an organised firework display. If you do use fireworks or light a bonfire at home, take on board our safety advice to ensure it is just the fireworks that go off with a bang: Keep fireworks in a closed box and always follow the instructions. Light them at arms length using a taper and stand well back. Never go back to a lit firework. Never put fireworks in your pocket or throw them. Don t light bonfires in unsuitable weather, particularly in windy conditions. Don t leave bonfires unattended. Build bonfires well clear of buildings, fences and hedges. Never use flammable liquids to start the fire, and never burn dangerous rubbish such as aerosols, paint, foam furniture, rubber tyres, and batteries. Before you light the bonfire, check that children and animals are not hiding inside and are a safe distance away. For more information on firework and bonfire safety log on to cambsfire.gov.uk, follow us on social media or call NOVEMBER

Remembering The Alexanders November 13th is Remembrance Sunday and, as usual, there will be a service at 10:45 am in the Parish Church to remember those who have given their lives in the service of their country in conflicts past and present. Wreathes will be laid by local uniformed organisations including The Royal British Legion. After the main service a new headstone marking the grave of James Alexander will be dedicated. The original headstone was in poor condition and had fallen over, the elements over the years making it almost impossible to read the original inscription. It was taken away to be repaired but unfortunately broke during the process as it had become quite fragile. Thankfully Co-Operative Funeral Services in Huntingdon stepped in to help out, funding a new headstone to the original design and inscription. I would like to thank them for their generosity and support. I would also like to thank Alan Footner, who first highlighted the significance of the headstone and asked for it to be repaired and reinstated back in The Church of England sometimes moves quite slowly, but we get there in the end! James Alexander was a servant to The Earl of Sandwich who died in During his time at Hinchingbrooke he was such a faithful servant to the Earl that upon his death the Earl paid for the original headstone to be erected in tribute. The inscription on the headheadstone reads: Sacred to the memory of James Alexander, a native of Africa, who lived more than half a century as a domestic servant in the Hinchingbrooke family and died November 15th 1802, in the 66th year of his life, the Earl of Sandwich caused this stone to be erected as a tribute to his long and faithful services. Slavery in the United Kingdom was very common in the 1800s and so servitude was not frowned upon as now but what is extraordinary and extremely unusual, but unbelievably touching, is the friendship these two men shared. It is clear that in such a time, and with both owner and slave knowing their place, both James and the 5th Earl tore down those constraints. What is of interest and historical importance is that James Alexander is the father of another James Alexander, who was born in 1772 and served under Vice Admiral Viscount Nelson at the battle of Trafalgar. This James (and his wife Elizabeth) are buried and commemorated by stones on the north side of the footpath. The two other stones, each side of Alexander senior s stone, relate to his wife Sarah and elder daughter Ann. It is hoped that both the local press and the son of the current Earl of Sandwich, Luke, Viscount Hinchingbrooke will join us for the dedication service. Everyone is invited to both the main service of Remembrance and the dedication of the headstone. 22 THE Brampton MAGAZINE

The Parish of East Leightonstone THE REVD JASON TAYLOR On 5th October The Church of England Commissioners met and we are a step closer to the approval of the scheme to combine the parishes of Brampton, Ellington and Grafham into a new, single parish called East Leightonstone. Written objections had been made by members of the public with, at best, tenuous connections to the churches in Brampton, Ellington and Grafham but the Commissioners have now over-ruled these. All things being well the scheme should now come into effect towards the end of the year, or early next year. I have written here before about the significance and origins of the name, but it is not the name that matters but rather the effect of having one parish instead of three. One parish means having one Parochial Church Council (P.C.C.) which in turn requires only one set of appointed officers and associated administration. This means that instead of doing many things three times we only have to do them once and that means the time and resources saved can be targeted at the people and things that matter most in Brampton, Ellington and Grafham. Whilst many things will remain the same (I certainly won t be using the name East Leightonstone in public, unless I have to the churches will be referred to as they currently are, by geographical location), there will doubtless be changes that the new Parochial Church Council will want to implement. It s not easy to see at this stage what those changes will be but they will all be with the intent of furthering mission and ministry in the three villages, raising the profile of the churches in their respective communities. It is hoped that early next year we might have a service of thanksgiving for the three churches and the old parishes whilst looking forward, in faith, to the future. More details will follow once arrangements are in place! As I write we are beginning a new chapter in the life of the churches in Brampton, Ellington and Grafham but we must remember that it is only that, a new chapter. We still hold dearly that which has gone before both in our own lifetime and long ago. The parish name may be changing but our purpose, vision and values remain unchanged: to worship God, tell others about his son Jesus and serve the community. A Curate for Brampton, Ellington and Grafham I m delighted to announce that the parishes of Brampton, Ellington and Grafham will soon be getting a curate (trainee vicar). Michael Bigg (Mike) will be joining us as a stipendiary (full-time) curate with his wife, Katy and their two small children Matthew and Thomas NOVEMBER

following his ordination as deacon at Ely Cathedral on July 2nd, although they will probably move to Brampton in June. I ve been asked why Mike and his family will be living in Brampton and not Ellington or Grafham; this is because the guidelines for training stipulate that the curate must live in the same village/ town as their training incumbent. I hope that Mike will be able to write a short article introducing himself to you all early next year. Mothers Union NEWS THIS MONTH Last month s Pudding Evening was a resounding success. A huge thank you to everyone who provided puddings, helped on the night and especially to those who came and gave so generously. 310 will be donated to the MU Emergency Relief Fund. When an emergency situation suddenly destabilises family life, whether natural or man-made, local Mothers Union groups can receive a grant from the Relief Fund. By equipping our members to respond right at the heart of the affected region, we are often one of the first agencies to deliver effective relief. You can read more on our website On 8th November we are holding a Film Night in the church hall and our meeting in Hilary Lodge on the afternoon of 15th November, will be a service in preparation for Advent. Both these meetings are open to non-members. Dedication of Headstone The dedication of the new headstone for James Alexander (pictured above) will take place straight after the Remembrance Sunday Service on 13 November 2016 at St. Mary Magdalene Church in Brampton. Dedication by the Reverend Jason Taylor. Everyone will be most welcome to attend. Branch leader Elizabeth and helpers at the Pudding Evening 24 THE Brampton MAGAZINE

Entertainment was provided by a new group from the U3A based in Huntingdon and known as the Uke3A. They played ukuleles and tunes that were familiar to us all. One member of the group also sang so a very big thank you to them and their leader Marie Ann Sykes for entertaining us so well. New members are always welcome to Befrienders, so why not come along to the Community Centre in the High Street from 10am to 12 noon for coffee, tea, cake and chat every Friday (not annual holidays). 28 Spring of Hope DISABLED CHILDREN OF UGANDA We continue to work with children with a wide range of special needs in rural Uganda, providing basic health care using both preventative and treatment approaches in particular physiotherapy, occupational therapy. Wherever possible, we provide assistive devices such as wheel chairs, cerebral palsy chairs, crutches and other supportive devices. When working with the local communities we aim to show that disabled children are as important as their able-bodied counterparts and as such we respect and advocate for their rights, including access to education. With home visits we manage to reach-out to a number of children with different conditions at their respective homes for physio and occupational therapy. In an average month we visit over 60 children in over 30 different villages. At our drop in clinics parents and carers bring their children for physiotherapy and occupational therapy. While the children are engaged in exercises or are assessed for assistive devices, their parents acquire skills to help engage their children further into activities at home. Working in the Kayunga and Mukono districts of Uganda SOH aims to enable disabled children reach their full potential and change attitudes so that disabled children are fully accepted in their community. 29 Messy Church AT BRAMPTON CHURCH HALL On the first Sunday of the month families from across Brampton join together for Messy Church. Messy Church is a form of church for children and adults that involves creativity, celebration and hospitality. Put more simply, there are crafts and things to make, things to draw and paint, a bible story is told and some family appropriate songs are sung; all this is followed by a shared meal together. The atmosphere is friendly and informal and everyone is welcome regardless of their church connection or attendance. In October the theme was one of the I am sayings of Jesus: I am the Good Shepherd and about forty people attended the event to explore what he meant when he said this and why it might be relevant for us today. Craft activities included making shepherd figures, decoupage and making sheep cupcakes. The next Messy Church is on November 6th at 3:30pm and the theme will be Messy Remembrance. There is also a Facebook Page where you can sign up (or not) and keep up to date on what s happening, as well as seeing photographs and other items of interest from previous Messy Church events: facebook.com/ groups/bramptonmessychurch We d love to see you and your family at the next Messy Church so please mark the date in your diary. 36 Brampton Cricket Club OCTOBER MATCH REPORTS Game 15 v Blunham3rd X1 (away) After a morning of heavy rain and presuming the last game of the season would be called off, we were surprised that the game was still on. We turned up and it continued to rain, so thought we would be down the pub nice and early. It stopped for about 5 minutes and onto the pitch we trudged having lost the toss and bowling in a reduced 35-over game. Duncan McGregor got an early breakthrough and Edwin Silvester got his first wicket for Brampton. Blunham ended up with 148 for 6 wickets from their allotted 35 overs. We never looked in any trouble whilst batting to get past the total. Andy Pegram (51 not out) and skipper Ian Purser (53) secured the win for the loss of only 2 wickets within 27 overs. So ends another Brampton CC season. We finished with a record of 8 wins, 5 losses, 1 abandoned and 1 rained off completely giving us an average points score of 12.87, which meant we ended up in 4th place in our first season back in Division 4. We have our annual awards night at the end of October where we will celebrate the performances of the season as well as commiserating with the recipient of the coveted Duck Award.
