Upcoming Meets: August 2013 August 3 11 AM Mark & Sheila Goodman Santa Maria (805) August AM Sal & Deborah Mele Santa Barbara (805) Please bring: A-G Desserts H-O Appetizers P-Z Salads September 7 Power September 21 Siegel October 19 Chaudier October 26 Arseneault November OPEN December OPEN Map and directions deleted from on-line edition. Please call meet host for directions. Mark & Sheila Goodman's Meet This meet is covered in detail in July issue. Please see it for all details. Sal and Deborah Mele's Walnut Line Then we will be at home of Sal and Deborah Mele. This is one of best layouts around, so if you are planning your first layout, re is a lot to learn about here. So, what makes it one of best? Well, it is a reasonable size, but has a lot of interesting features packed into it. It has real water, a working drawbridge, a working cable car, a circus, and a working volcano (CO2, not lava, but it's still impressive). Plus lots of interesting buildings, and plenty of plants. Many of Sal's buildings have moving bits of machinery, such as saw mill and machine shop. As if that weren't enough, re are also two loops of track. One is a logging line with steep grades and sharp curves, and or is flatter, with easier curves. There are some standard size truss bridges, so vertical clearance is about 9 or 10 inches. Holiday Party So far, three people responded to idea of having holiday party at a commercial location. One was in favor, one opposed, third was neutral. The unofficial holiday party committee got toger at Hahn's meet and decided that although we have outgrown having it at someone's home, moving to a commercial place is too different, and probably a lot more expensive than most of club members would support. The unanimous decision was to stop having a holiday party, and replace it with a regular train meet for month of December. So, we are looking for someone to host December as well as November. Help Wanted Jim Eldridge has decided to retire from position of meet chair, so if you would like to take over, please contact Jim for all details. Jim took over from Beaver in July of 2010, and has done a great job. We have had at least one meet every month since n. So, thanks a billion, Jim, for a job well done. Organizing meets is arguably most important job in club. We might survive without a newsletter, but without meets, we wouldn't have any reason to exist. Some months program mselves; ors require some marketing. If you have what it takes, we need you.

All Aboard! Abraham Lincoln Business Car Please welcome our newest members, John and Jeanne Demko of Santa Maria. You may have met m already, as y live just a few doors down from Ed and Diane Morse. So far, that is all re is to say about m. Union Pacific Big Boy #4014 Thanks to everyone who wrote to spread word that UP has purchased Big Boy currently on display at Pomona. They intend to move it to Cheyenne, Wyoming, restore it to operational condiditon and add it to ir heritage fleet operation. That is expected to take three to five years, so don't bor trying to buy a ticket yet. So, here's a question to ponder: The price was not mentioned, but how would you put a price on an old locomotive? For some people, it's a priceless antique, but for most, it's 1 ¼ million pounds of scrap steel. Although it's in pretty good shape, considering. In addtion to being in dry Sourn California air, y removed asbestos boiler cladding so that rain water wouldn't collect and rust boiler. Ed Davis has spent last year scratchbuilding a model of a heavyweight business car dubbed Abraham Linclon. In case you don't remember you can refresh your memory here: July 2012 newsletter. Ed sent more pictures recently. The work is going a bit faster, now that he has a little help. Ed says poor fellow lost his or arm in a train wreck. He seems to have learned new skills, and has adapted well to his new situation. Next, we see a row of compartments that were all built up ahead of time and are ready to install. The wood is cherry. How Times Change Dept. In 1962, Sourn California Chapter of Railway and Locomotive Historical Society sent its acceptance of 4014 to Union Pacific by telegram, and last leg of its journey onto Fairplex grounds was on Pacific Electric tracks. Upcoming non-gcgrs Events August Goleta Railroad Days Goleta Depot, 300 N. Carnaros Rd Goleta. 11 AM to 4 PM Saturday and Sunday. In addition to ever popular handcar rides, and ride-on trains, re will be a sale of new and used books, videos, posters and or collectibles, clothing and or stuff. Goleta RR Days September 14 Chocolate Lovers Ltd A day trip by train along Central Coast from Santa Barbara to San Luis Obispo with chocolate tasting on way back. Tickets and more information September Galloping Goose #5 Chama New Mexico to various destinations each day. C&TS Fall Color October Central Coast Railroad Festival San Luis Obispo and surrounding area. More info here. No car would be suitable for big shot executives without showers and sinks. This shower was built from foil with fine mesh screen over drain. The shower head and knobs were pins that Ed filed to shape. The sinks were made from laminated plastic sheet with bowls cut out with a Dremel tool. Note fittings on drain pipe. Great work, Ed, please keep us posted.

Bob & Rochelle Hahn's Meet This meet always gets a great turnout, and this was no exception. People who only come once in a blue moon were re. John Power opened show by running his RGS Goose #6. Crazy Charlie brought his Lionel Altantic. Usually a Lionel anything can't pull its own shadow, but Charlie added a powered tender, and it ran very well. Randy Bryie brought his GP-38. Randy usually shoves his controller into hands of any kid around, but re weren't many kids, so Randy actually got to run his own train. Jim Eldridge ran Sylvia's Chessy 44 tonner and several cars. John Lyans ran his Rio Grande C-16 #278. The real 278 still exists, and is on display in Black Canyon of Gunnison National Park in Colorado. Rex Davis cane with a complete cow train. Even engineer, brakeman Bill Fincher ran his pretty little Forney. and conductor are cows dressed as It spent some time posing on a bridge. proper train crew. The odd looking car right behind tender was an Byron McCracken ran his PIKO Rio aquarium car with leaping porpoises Grande Mogul. that Rex modified to show cows jumping over moon. Gary Raymond ran his little yellow industrial diesel with a string of side dump cars that he modified to standard gauge with smaller wheels. John Whitaker ran a new-to-him Bachmann Shay that he acquired from Jim Eldridge. He is going to letter it for Whitaker Lumber Co. Rochelle Hahn had her fairy trains running on elevated track, including outdoor loop. There were 12 Eggliners, most ever, so far. Rochelle Hahn had winner and anor entry as well. The beehive car is hers, of course. Thanks to Bill Fincher and Kim Whitaker for some of se pictures. And thanks to Bob and Rochelle for anor one-of-a-kind meet.

Portland Regional Meet As a non-gcgrs event, this would normally rate only one page, but Ed and Diane Morse and Ray Turner sent loads of great photos, and we only had one meet this month, so it gets extra coverage. to se. As you might expect, re's not a lot of constructed scenery, in form of lineside structures, or even towns. Anor feature of many of se layouts is that plants all seem to have preceded layout; it looks like track was run through an existing garden. The most striking thing about se layouts is that most of m are enormous. Gary and Marilyn Siegel's Ray also sent links to some videos layout is around a third of an acre, and that give a better idea of just how large that would not be huge in comparison se layouts really are. A quick trip around several layouts Tom Miller's Big Boy Thanks to Ed, Diane, and Ray for sending all of se pictures. Those with embedded captions are all from Ed and Diane, rest are from Ray. Unlabeled photos are from same layout as last labeled one reading left to right and top to bottom.

National Garden RR Convention Ray Turner, our member in San Jose, made it to Convention this year, and wrote to tell us about it. Take it away, Ray: I was fortunate to be able to attend National Garden Railway Convention in Cincinnati this year. First, let me say Thanks to Cincinnati, Columbus, and Miami Valley clubs for organizing a fine convention. Wednesday opened with an ice cream social and open exhibit hall. Garden RR tours - both bus and self-drive - were on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday morning with vendor hall open in afternoon. There was a social/dinner each night - a great buffet at Entertrainment Junction Thursday, a BBQ Friday night, and banquet Saturday night at old Union Station. Sunday AM was farewell breakfast. A few layouts were open again Sunday. There were clinics each afternoon and live steam track was running all\ day every day and a model/photo contest. Paul Busse s company, Applied Imagination, built a display layout in lobby. One railroad had 8 high bridges, but most unusual thing I saw was a railroad running thru a hollow tree that had fallen on property. And most intriguing thing I saw was a working, fullyautomated incline (think Angels Flight in LA) modeled after one on Mt. Adams in Cincinnati area. The trolley makes a circuit through lower town, drives on to a platform which rises to top of mountain. The trolley n drives off platform and makes a circuit of upper town, returns to incline and drops back down to repeat. See video on links below. You ll find videos The convention was held at Great Wolf Lodge. I can t imagine a better place to vacation if you have kids (or grandkids). All within lodge were a pool, huge water park, video arcade, miniature golf, and a fantasy quest. And next door was Kings Island, a Great America-like amusement park. If you find yourself within 3 hours of Cincinnati, you really must visit EnterTrainment Junction. It is 50,000 square feet of museum-quality G scale model railroading. Three separate areas cover early period (1800 s), transition period (1940 s-50 s), and modern era. A custom built computer system keeps 70+ trains operating simultaneously. There are also areas for kids to play with trains, historical displays, a café, and a large, well-stocked train store. Since this was a special event just for conventioneers, we got a tour backstage - under mountains - to see how it was built and operated. The tours included about 30 garden railroads organized into geographical areas each day. Unfortunately, busses could only get to five railroads each day so we didn t get to see all of m. And it rained all during tours on Thursday. Cincinnatians are used to wear and run ir trains anyway! People were out with an umbrella in one hand and a camera in or. here: NGRC2013 Part 1 NGRC2013 Part 2 NGRC2013 Part 3 NGRC2013 Part 4 NGRC2013 Part 5 NGRC2013 Part 6 If that s not enough, re are a thousand photos here: Ray Turner Thanks, Ray, now I am sorry I didn't get re. Be sure to watch videos; Ray has done a terrific job of mixing close ups of trains with local scenery. Ray referred to Great America, which is a roller coaster park in Bay Area.
