1 Saturday September 16th 11am to 2 pm Gary & Marilyn Siegel This is a big layout with battery power only. Please bring: A- Z Anything that you want. Future Meets: October 21st Siegel OPS Meet October 28th Arsenault November 18th Siegel December 9th Holiday Party at the Arsenault's. "That's my story and I'm sticking to it" Rex Davis Gary & Marilyn Siegel - upcoming On Saturday September 16th we are having a meet at Gary & Marilyn's beautiful home with the huge backyard. He emulates the prototype between Santa Cruz and San Jose and does a very good job of it. Most of us have probably been to Gary & Marilyn's home, but each time we go we see something that wasn't there before. And if you haven't seen the HO layout in the garage, check out the detail in it. Great food and great views. See you there... September 2017 Oahu and working on the Oahu Railway. (Ed. Note-I have been to this railroad twice. Seven years ago it was only open on Sundays and for limited hours, like 10am - 2pm. It is also called the Pineapple Train and during WWII was used by the Army for carrying munitions to Schofield Barracks from the port. It is good for riding on too. I know they have a center cab diesel, but I am not sure if their steam engine runs. If you go to Hawaii try to make time for this railroad. It is located on the east end of Oahu near Ewa). Here are the pictures Georges sent... What is this? A honeymoon? If you have any questions or comments about the meets, or would like to host one, please contact John Whitaker at the address on the back page. Restored Parlor Car Peanuts by Charles Schultz Georges & Marie Arsenault on Oahu Gary Raymond got an from Georges which he forwarded to me. It said: "Hi Gary, See if you can recognize this guy in this video clip. I believe his name is Steve. He says he knows you and a bunch of other guys in the club. He used to be in the club. He works on the restored RR. I will send you some pictures of the vintage car that is over 100 years old that has been restored to pristine condition. I don't have Rex's address (in the future, everyone take my address with you on vacation or a trip - Ed.), maybe you can forward this to him to be put in the next newsletter." By the time Gary responded, Georges and Marie had flown to Cape Cod, MA. Gary responded that it was Steve Vendt who is now living on
2 Heavens! I can almost taste the pineapple and Mai-Tai's now Art Sylvester In Virginia City, NV Then I received an from Art Sylvester who couldn't make Mark & Sheila's meet on August 5th because he was riding the Virginia & Truckee RR (the long trip). Here is his photo which is in Virginia City, NV...I guess Art is behind the camera...duh! Walt Thompson In Arizona Walt & Mary Thompson were in Mesa, Arizona recently. He said, "When we had our place in Mesa Arizona I became friends with Dennis Sirrine, the owner of a very good Mexican restaurant there, Rancho de Tia Rosa. He was also a garden railroad guy in a big way. I don't know how much he had in the way of running stock but he sure made Al at San Val Trains happy." Here is the only picture he could send: Mark & Sheila's Meet t did not go to this meet. When Ed Morse had his meet, I swore I would not drive to Santa Maria that soon. And then, because Mark said he would have a country singer I decided to go. And then, I got scheduled for a birthday party, for you guessed it, a grand daughter. Four years old on Saturday. So I had to go. It's not like the first time I have heard the grandkid excuse in this club. Three people sent me pictures from the meet. The most came from Kim Whitaker, then John Albin, and Mark Riese. The information came mostly from Mark Goodwin. There were people there. Four couples from the Central Coast Club, Clint and Denise Hinkle, Dave and Judy Hayes, Walt and Judy Wadja, and Mark and Michelle Ewards (Edwards?) Two couples were at Ed Morse's meet and Mark invited them to his. Nancy Bryie said she and Randy, Don & Linda Morgan, Ed Morse & Debra King, John & Kim Whitaker, and Doc Riese were there. Clint Hinkle ran an LGB engine modified into a log engine which only would run forward. Gary Olmsted ran a Chris Walas caboose that had its own motor inside. Randy Bryie ran a Mac 70, and a consist of two new and beautiful Burlington GPs with 14 cars. Ed Morse ran his GP 45 and also his Thomas the train with two passenger cars. Micheal and Daniel Rucker ran a consist of three Southern Pacific F3s with 8 cars. Alaina and Avory Freitas ran a Southern Pacific NW2 with three cars. They were one of two crashes for the day. Mark Goodman ran his Uintah #50 with 4 water cars, three flat cars filled with gilsonite bags, box car and Uintah caboose. Richard Abraham ran his GP38 that Randy helped him wire, with Richard's custom cars, blacksmith car, and steam donkey. We (he) had a singer/guitar player. He played train songs. Someone asked him kiddingly to play AC/DC and he did, of course in country style. His name was Ron Miller. The flowers particularly the roses were in great shape. They were pruned by Debra King, Ed Morse's friend. She also, planted a dozen succulents on my railroad for me. Mark Goodman & Sal Mele by Mark "Doc" Riese
3 Pictures by Kim Whitaker "Doc" gets the ladies wherever he goes. Thomas and passenger cars. John Albin contemplating Ed & Thomas (and onlookers) Main town. Mark overseeing whatever he oversees. And besides train runnng there is... Country singer Ron Miller, eating. That's where the food is coming from Mark trying to get up the nerve. One of two accidents The whole group with Sheila & Mark in foreground Believe it or not, we are already scheduling meets for To book yours, contact John Whitaker at
4 Pictures from John Albin - Main town again Could be the "other" clubs? P.S. - Last month I said I thought I saw Larry Lowenberg at the Hahn's. At John Power's he admitted that he was there with an LGB Forney. Here is a picture of it. (This is known as stuffing information in anywhere you can, especially if the rest of your newsletter is already formatted and it won't fit in anywhere else.) John Power's meet Well, I have to eat crow, swallow my pride, and apologize to John Power for saying last month that his buildings were nothing to speak of. Actually, John read the August 2017 newsletter and said, "Crap (I'm not sure if he really said "crap" - I am just adding an editor's literacy... or lack thereof). But he did say, "Rex thinks I don't have enough buildings, so I better get busy." And busy he got. The outdoor layout had towns, mines, a jail, an airport, two or three stations, and an area that was part of a disaster. The layout in the garage had some beautiful buildings including a turntable, a mine, and trestle. There were about 25 members there and for the first time in the last five years, there was only ONE dessert. Too much decent food to brag about so I won't. Charlie Richard brought his USA Trains F3 with seven "black widow" gondolas and a USA Trains "black widow" caboose. Lamont Stolley had his Bachmann Anniversary with three gondolas, a flat car and a D&RGW caboose. Randy Bryie brought two trains. A Bachmann Eureka & Palisades steam engine (very colorful) towing three Aristocraft old-time passenger cars and a Bachmann C-19 with extended tender, four boxcars, a tank car, and a caboose, all Bachmann. John Whitaker brought his MTH Dash 8 diesel with two boxcars, a gondola with coal, and two tank cars. Ron Means also brought two trains. An Accucraft Goose #7 and a Bachmann two-truck Shay with a flat car with lumber, and two empty gondolas. John Power had the most toys with three trains on the layout. He had an Accucraft D&RGW K-36, #495 pulling a long string of tank cars which was operated by Dan & Joseph. He also had an Accucraft Goose #2, and I assume an Accucraft three-truck Shay with three skeleton cars and logs, and a bobber caboose. Ed Davis brought a show and tell 1:20.3 work caboose built out of 1:24 parts. Huh? Joe Busse did not bring a train because his wife Leslie had her arm in a cast and in case he had to catch her if she fell...gary Olmstead brought a wooden sign with "Gold Coast Garden Railroad Society" painted on it for use at the Goleta Valley days on August 26th. He also brought his internally powered caboose train which is run by his phone. Chuck Salvatore did not bring a train at all and Rex Davis left his in the truck. Since I am not too good with written speech and a picture is worth a thousand words, I'll just let the pictures do my talking.
