Editor s Soapbox The three models shown here earned awards in this year s contest. B&O EL3a by Philip Bonzon, MMR earned 93 pts for 1st Place Scratch Built Steam; NYC Box Car by John Johnson, MMR earned 89 pts for 2nd Place Kit Built Freight Car; and this Salt Point diorama by Rich Walz earned 104 pts for 1st Place Kit Built Diorama. (See also last page.) So the Peachtree Express convention is over along with this year s contest and how did we do? Well in total number of judged models, the 2007 Detroit contest edged us out for the lowest number of models by only ONE model at 43 while we had 44 - not good! So WHO let us down? Well it was not the SER as the bar chart at right shows, the SER had 29 members (12 from Piedmont Division) who brought something to the contest whereas only 8 SSR members, 7 MCR members, 5 MER members, 3 each LSR & NER members, & ONE member each from NCR, MCoR, PCR, PSR & Asia (Japan) brought contest entries to the convention. As the Contest Participation by Year chart in the upper right corner shows, many members brought more than one entry and some brought a large number of entries. This chart notes conditions that each year s contest may have had to contend with such as post-9/11 or the SARS epidemic, the national-run conventions, and the more recent joint-run conventions. So how did our members do? Pretty well, the list of SER winners appears elsewhere in this issue along with a few photos. More will appear in the online version of this issue. Speaking of this issue, you are probably wondering why it is so late? I won t say I am burned out (yet) but I will say that after the 1995 CrossRoads Atlanta convention was over, many of us didn t do any modeling at all for a year! I wasn t doing the newsletter back then but I am now and the same situation applies so it has taken me a while to recover from that. I did take a non-railroading vacation trip out to San Francisco a few weeks ago since this year s convention was in town and my mind was expecting to go somewhere like I do every year for each convention, not stay in town. I saw a lot of things I d wanted to see for a very long time and a few things I only learned about once I was out there. Timing was perfect for everything except the actual reason for going (sorry Jamy) but all in all it was a good trip. Now I have to play catch-up on deferred projects like the 2011, 2012, & 2013 NMRA Contest PhotoBook series, the next SouthErneR - Winter 2014 & the online version of this issue. PV Fort Point and the Golden Gate Bridge. Forty-five years I have wanted to see this fort under the bridge and this year I finally did. Back in 1968, on one of our family trips, I walked over the bridge and looked down. This year I got to look up - it was a great experience and a great trip! 4 Volume 54 #4.5 - E-SouthErneR - Fall 2013

The President s Car Glen Hall, MMR The National Convention has come and gone and of course it was a great one, thanks to the Piedmont Division. I am sure that all who attended enjoyed themselves. This is going to be a short message, as I am way past the deadline. This past weekend, Sept 21, out west in the Magnolia Division was our second Mini-Meet. Division Superintendent, Troy Hight and wife were wonderful hosts. A greater than expected attendance filled the five clinics to capacity. Included were a tour of the Philadelphia, MS Depot built in 1905 and the Pearl River Railroad a huge G-Scale layout build by Philip Prince. Just to peak your interest it has 700 feet of track, 14 bridges including a 13 ft trestle and 21 turnouts. Coastal Rail Buffs 24th Annual Model RR & Train Show January 18th & 19th Armstrong Atlantic State University Sports Center Abercorn Street, Savannah, GA Saturday 10:00 am to 5:00 pm Sunday 10:00 am to 4:00 pm Admission $5.00 adults; Students & Seniors $4.00; Active Duty Military & under 12 FREE Dealer tables and Operating layouts in O, HO & N For details go to: Mini-Meets are intended to help increase awareness of the NMRA and hopefully increase membership in the smaller divisions. The Superintendents Handbook spells out the requirements for a super to request the region s assistance in setting one up. Elections are on the horizon! All of the officers and two director positions are up for reelection. There will be some in-depth Duties posted in future e-letters. Both the e-letters and the Southerner will have dates and details for submission of Candidates along with bios. Keep a steady hand on the throttle and your eyes on the track 1st Place in Thumbs went to Bob Even (right) here being congratulated by NMRA Contest Chair Bob Hamm, MMR. Carl Smeigh Photo CALLING ALL SER MEMBERS... It is that time again. As chairman of the 2014 SER Officer Nominating Committee we are looking for a few good men and women to serve as officers for the time period. This year all offices are up for election; President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasure and 2 Directors. Each office is for a 2 year term except for the 2 directors which serve a 4 year term. All terms begin at the 2014 Annual Business Meeting. We would like to have members running from each division and if at all possible at least 2 members running for each position. It is time for those who have been thinking about running to do something about it. If you would like to put your name in nomination for any of the offices please contact me for more information or send me you BIO with what office you want to run for. Serving in one of these positions is a good way to earn you Association Official AP Certificate. You have until January 15th to put your name in nomination but don't delay. Avoid the rush and contact me today. You can send your questions, comments or BIO to: TCUSKER@HOTMAIL.COM Volume 54 #4.5 - E-SouthErneR - Fall

SER SPECIAL AWARD CATEGORIES JOHN DAKIN AWARD: This award is given in recognition of a model judged to be the best example of a kit-bash. It is based on the total number of points scored for a model that uses 2 or more kits combined to produce a single finished model. The award recognizes the unique ability of the entrant to combine model kits into a better representation of a prototype, and the use of the kits to produce a finished entry which represents neither starting kit. The award is an individualized plaque. SILVER SPIKE AWARD: This award is given in recognition of the model receiving the highest score by a first time entrant to an SER Contest. Categories of motive power, rolling stock, structures and displays are all eligible. The model may be a kit, kit-bashed, scratch built or a combination of all three. The award recognizes a modeler s beginning efforts in the hobby and should not be judged less stringent than others in its category, but should have more constructive comments provided that will encourage the modeler and provide advice to improve his/her modeling skills. The award is an individualized plaque and is independent of any other contest placement. GOLD SPIKE AWARD: This award is given in recognition of the best Narrow Gauge model by an entrant. Motive power, rolling stock, displays and gauge-specific structures are eligible. The model may be scratch built, kit-bashed or a combination of the two. The award is an individualized plaque. WILL MILLER AWARD: This award is for a model entered as a Prototype Model earning the highest point total in motive power, rolling stock, structure and display categories. The award is an individualized plaque. DUDLEY ROSS AWARD: This award is given in recognition of the highest score for an N scale model. Categories of motive power, rolling stock, structures and displays are eligible. The award is an individualized plaque. MACK CRAIG AWARD: This award is the Best in Show for a model entered by a contestant. It is the model with the highest point total, usually the highest scoring model in the contest. All model categories are eligible. This award may be given to an entrant at the Silver Level if the model is determined to be exemplary in points, construction and detail. This is a determination to be made by the Contest Chairman and the judges at the end of judging. The award is an individualized plaque and a revolving trophy. MIKE CALLAHAN 101 AWARD: This award is given to a model which best exemplifies the skills and craftsmanship of the late Mike Callahan. The criteria are as follows: 1. Any category of model is eligible for the award. 2. The model must not have been a previous winner of SER Regional Awards. 3. The model must receive 101 points or greater in the SER/NMRA Judged Contest. 4. In addition, the model must capture the attention to detail, difficulty in construction, and quality of modeling typical of Mike Callahan Contest Entries of the past. It will be the responsibility of the Contest Chairman and his/her contest judges to identify these qualities in the qualifying models. The award will consist of an individualized engraved plaque. 5. In the event there are multiple models that qualify for the award, the Contest Chairman and the attending judges will decide which model best captures the spirit of the award. 6. This award may not be given each year depending on qualifying entries. RULES TO BE AWARE OF THAT JUDGES MUST FOLLOW 1. The SER model contests will be judged using current NMRA standard criteria for judging and point scoring. 2. All judging will take place in accordance with Achievement Program judging guidelines. Volume 54 #4.5 - E-SouthErneR - Fall

3. All entrants should receive comment sheets regarding the scoring of their model. Judges comments should be concise yet descriptive enough for the entrant to fully understand what the judge is communicating. 4. Judges will handle models carefully and only as much as necessary for judging. 5. Judging should be done in minimum teams of two for each category. Whenever possible, less experienced judges will be paired with those more experienced. 6. Judging is to be generally positive, highlighting what the modeler has done well rather than point out what he has not, but striking a balance between the model s good points and flaws. Comments should suggest how improvements can be made to the model and to encourage the entrant to re-enter his model in a future contest if he so desires. 7. Questions regarding prototype or modeling techniques should be discussed with the Contest Chairman and other judges. 8. Questions regarding rules interpretation or point scoring should be directed to the Contest Chairman. 9. Judges will judge the model, not the modeler. The judges may know the modeler, but are instructed to judge only the entry(s) presented, not what the modeler may be capable of producing. What the entrant has entered in the past is irrelevant. 10. Judges will excuse themselves from judging models in any category (motive power, rolling stock, structures and displays) they ve entered providing there are a sufficient number of experienced judges. Any additional decisions will be made by the Contest Chairman. 11. Judges should meet with the Contest Chair prior to the start of judging for instructions and answers to any questions pertaining to the contest. These rules and guidelines are intended for the smooth operation of the SER contest, usually held during the annual convention, but are also in effect for any SER or NMRA sponsored contest at the region or division level. The contest is intended to provide a venue for models to be evaluated based on standard current criteria for the advancement and improvement of modeling skills throughout the Southeastern Region and the NMRA. Failure to follow or understand these rules and guidelines undermines the purpose and the effectiveness of the contest and takes away from the enjoyment of the hobby for both entrants and judges. APPENDIX: BASIC JUDGING INFORMATION FOR CONTESTANTS SER and NMRA contests are judged using specific criteria as set by the NMRA Contest Chairman, Achievement Program Chairman, Contest and AP Committees. Contests use the AP judging guidelines. The key purpose of those guidelines is to answer the following 2 questions: 1)What is the modeler trying to do? And 2) How well did he do it? Another way of saying this is we are not judging how good the model is, we are trying to judge how good the model builder is. A fine, but important distinction. These criteria include point distribution, judging guidelines, scoring matrix charts and general operation of the contest. It is highly recommended that any person currently entering contests or considering entering contests, go to the NMRA website ( regarding how they are judged and to review the steps required for scoring models. The more information you can gather on how your model will be evaluated will help make the contest experience more understandable and enjoyable. Look at how you think the your model might score using the matrix charts for each category of judging. Doing this in stages as your model construction progresses, will not only improve your finished model, but help you to understand the point totals when the model is judged. Paperwork is also a concern for many entrants as it relates to entering contests. The NMRA and SER guidelines state that entrants should provide the contest judges with sufficient information in each category in order that a fair assessment of the model and the modeler s skills can be determined. A lack of information will be considered relevant to the evaluation of the entry. Irrelevant or superfluous information will not be considered when judging the entry. Provide as much information regarding the model as possible, especially as it relates to conformity. This is where judges will look to see what your model is supposed to represent. Photos, plans and accompanying documentation help to speed the judging process. Remember, a lack of information will yield lower scores. Contest judges are not required to look at ancillary documentation. Most will, but it is not required. Rev. #6 Feb. 16, Volume 54 #4.5 - E-SouthErneR - Fall 2013

SER CONTEST RULES & AWARDS REVISIONS The most recent NMRA Southeastern Region Contest took place at the 2012 Region Convention in Gatlinburg, TN, the next is scheduled for the Region Convention in Memphis, TN in late spring of As most of you know the NMRA prohibits any region having a city hosting the annual NMRA National Convention from holding a region convention that same year. Therefore Peachtree Express, the 2013 NMRA National Convention in Atlanta, GA, did not allow for an SER Contest this year. The SER Contest in Gatlinburg had sixty-plus model entries, an excellent number representing a good cross section of scales and a wide spectrum of entry categories. The Photo Contest also had an impressive number of entries. Kudos again to all who participated. At the close of both contest and judging, the team of judges selected by SER Contest Chair Glen Hall, (now Glenn Hall, MMR and also our SER President) retired, emphasis on tired, along with other conventioneers to the banquet to enjoy dinner and the award ceremonies. Later that evening casual conversations about the contest took place and the consensus among judges commenting was it was time to review and update SER contest rules and regulations. Simply stated the objective was contest standards would in no way be compromised, any confusing text would be re-written, contestant entry levels of Gold or Silver reviewed primarily because of tracking difficulties, and several contest awards either redesignated or eliminated. Yours truly drew the short straw and was voluntold to form a committee to work out the revisions for SER BOD approval and adoption in time for this years mid- February BOD meeting in Memphis. Committee members chosen included: SER Contest Chair Glenn Hall, former SER Contest Chair and current SER AP Chair George Gilbert, Bob Beatty, MMR, Dean Belowich, MMR, and Dr. Joe Nichols, Jr. Thanks to the efforts of this experienced and well-qualified team it only took 5 revisions (!) until everyone was satisfied. Upon presentation to the BOD for approval, one paragraph was further amended and current revision 6 was adopted. I ve asked SouthErneR Editor Paul Voelker to publish the revised SER Contest Rules & Awards in their entirety. As I write this, the NMRA National Convention is two months away. 20 cians would be requested from the SER and MCoR. Former President Gelmini followed this discussion by sending a contract to Mike for signature that spelled out the SER s responsibilities and included specific language to the effect that the SER would have NO financial responsibility/liability for this convention. Given the unusual financial arrangements for this convention, the question of splitting convention profit was not raised in this document. (Note: we are still awaiting Fleming s signature on the contract). Achievement Program Chair George Gilbert commented that the purpose of our conventions is for the benefit of our members and not to make a profit. Executive Advisor Beaty said that we should repeat our request to Mike Fleming for a proposed budget in line with SER Convention guidelines. Secretary Coble suggested organizing activities in the Athens, GA area. This opportunity will be investigated. Membership Report Registrar Steve Prevette reported that NMRA membership in the region grew to 1,490, an increase of 304 over the past twelve months, and SouthErneR subscribers increased by 14. Much of the increase was due to Rail Pass memberships related to the NMRA national convention in Atlanta. Executive Advisor Beaty moved that the Board of Directors authorize a review of treasury assets using at least one board member and one non-board member at the installation of a new treasurer. Seconded by Vice President Coleman. Director Charlie Crawford asked if the board would select individuals to conduct the audit. The SER president will select individuals with input from the BOD. Motion passed. As the national organization requires audits of its books, the change in SER bylaws regarding audits does not require a vote by membership. Treasurer Mole will draft a bylaw change. Next Meeting The next Board of Directors meeting will be held February 8, 2014 in Greenville, SC. Adjourn Director Randall Watson moved that the meeting adjourn. Seconded by Vice President Coleman. Motion passed. 24 Volume 54 #4.5 - E-SouthErneR - Fall 2013

Bob McIntyre Remembered By Joe Sullivan On Monday, October 7, 2013 the Piedmont Division suffered a great loss. Our Superintendent Emeritus, Bob McIntyre died suddenly while on vacation at St. Simons Island. Bob had been suffering from serious medical conditions for several years, and was at major risk, but the end still came very suddenly, and we are all at a loss to comprehend his absence after he has played such a significant role in the lives of those in the Division. The Division extends our sympathy to Bob s wife Connie, his family, and his church, Mt. Pisgah United Methodist. We are especially grateful to Connie for her steadfast support of Bob s work for the Division over the last few difficult years. Bob had served as Director of Personnel, Superintendent and Superintendent Emeritus of the Piedmont Division over the last thirteen years. Most recently, Bob was chairman of the Division s effort in hosting the 2013 NMRA National Convention, which was an outstanding success. Bob was also the Division committee chairman for the NMRA Achievement Program as well as chairman for the Piedmont Pilgrimage. Robert L. McIntyre Peachtree Express Convention Chairman Piedmont Division Superintendent Emeritus Piedmont Pilgrimage Chairman Piedmont Division AP Chairman Bob McIntyre (seated) talks with outgoing NMRA Director Tony Koester at the Peachtree Express Train Show this past July. Over the years, Bob played a major role in expanding the activities of the Division. Bob was a native of Pennsylvania s Susquehanna Valley, and had participated in a program there which opened many model railroads to the public over a number of weekends, and thought such a program could work for the Piedmont Division. Working with others in the Division, Bob organized the Piedmont Pilgrimage in 2002, with twelve local layouts participating. Over the years, the Pilgrimage has grown to more than eighty layouts over six weekends in October and November (which is Model Railroading Month) The National Model Railroad Association (NMRA) has an Achievement Program (AP) which honors individuals for achievements in modeling, culminating in the Master Model Railroader (MMR) designation. Bob supported the AP program enthusiastically and was chairmen of the Division s committee supporting the AP and sponsoring local contents. While illness (and an unfortunate house fire) prevented Bob from completing the program himself, six other division members achieved MMR designation while Bob was chairman of the Division s program and others are in progress. Seeking a local group for model railroad operations. Bob and a few other division members started the Chattahoochee Express Operating Group, which was the second operating group in the Atlanta area. While he was Superintendent of the Division, Bob encouraged others to start local operating groups as a way to enhance the model railroading experience. Metro Atlanta now has a number of operating groups ranging from Fayetteville to Austell to Hoschton. Perhaps Bob s most lasting contribution to the Division was to serve as the chair of the committee which planned and realized the 2013 NMRA National Convention. Despite increasing difficulties with his medical condition, Bob organized and led the team which made it all happen last July. Bob was very proud of the effort of so many committee members and volunteers to provide the 1,200+ attendees a quality experience at the convention. Over the years Bob touched each one of us with his enthusiasm and determination, and we have learned so much from him. Bob never let his own difficulties dampen his cheerfulness or separate him from his friends we will all miss him very much. Model Railroading is indeed The Worlds Greatest Hobby because of people like Bob McIntyre. Thanks Bob!!!! All of us who were fortunate to know Bob McIntyre as a friend and fellow hobbyist will always be blessed by his presence then and his memory now. He served his beloved Piedmont Division and its members in many capacities with genuine dedication and sincerity. He created, or helped create, and officiated over many of its programs and activities, the key components we ve come to enjoy which make our fellowship so rewarding and strong. Over the past 13 years and even in spite of the ever escalating, debilitating physical effects of treatments he endured after having beaten bone cancer, a fire that demolished his and Connie s home, his contagious enthusiasm for the hobby of model railroading and enjoyment of his many friends never waned. Most recently he was justly proud of having Chaired Peachtree Express, the NMRA s premier National Convention here in Atlanta, helping guide it to acclaimed success. Courage, fortitude, tenacity and inspiration, all inadequately simple words that may best describe Bob s character, the admirable traits he demonstrated to all of us time and time again and which left us wondering if we could ever be so brave under similar circumstances. As we move on to enjoy the benefits of what Bob leaves behind, his spirit will continue to be with us for a very long time to come, and he will be remembered with gratitude and thanks for having been a friend and a positive influence in our lives. May God embrace and bless Bob, Connie and the McIntyre family. Peter Youngblood, MMR Volume 54 #4.5 - E-SouthErneR - Fall

The layouts, clinics, tours and especially the hospitality were superb. The Train Show was great, with the announcements of several new locomotive releases making the author a little poorer. The Operations SIG sponsored many sessions; they even held sessions at a large live steam club north of Atlanta. That was a first for that club. And it was a lot of fun, operating prototypically (and safely) in 7.5 scale. The Division s next meeting is in the Enka Candler Library, in Enka, North Carolina, on October 19 with clinics on constructing a crossing tower, scenery techniques and Inventories and Estates, our usual show and tell and a contest/display of Maintenance of Way cars on tap. We will also begin accepting nominations for Superintendent and Paymaster, with the incumbents also running. Elections will be at the January meeting, along with our annual business meeting. It s not too early to put in a plug for the next Region Convention in Memphis, TN in June. It s a joint SER/Mid Continent Region event with tours to a trolley museum, 3 different railroads and the FedEx hub. Early registration is $65, going to $80 in May. Hotel is a Hilton. The convention website is at More information will be forthcoming soon. 30 Volume 54 #4.5 - E-SouthErneR - Fall 2013

Division 5 Piedmont News Charlie Crawford, MMR cacrawford@bellsouth.net The Piedmont Division thanks all our fellow S.E.R. members who attended, supported or otherwise participated in the recently concluded Peachtree Express 2013 National Convention. By all accounts National felt it was a most successful event. The areas we were totally our responsibility did quite well. This would include the Silent Auction, Company Store and Convention cars. while profitable we do have an ample supply of HO and N scale cars. If any of you N scale modelers would like to build a unit train, we can deal. We are awaiting the final financial results from National as of this writing. We would like to give a special Thank You to the Southeast Region and the Steel City Division for sponsoring our Welcome Reception and the Banquet Happy Hour. Both events were were well received by convention attendees. A very pleasant surprise was the number of new members signed on at the Train Show. A total of 205 joined the region, including 135 for the Piedmont Division. Glad to see that several other divisions got a membership bump from this event. Piedmont Division Director of Personnel Paul Rankin assisted by Rick Coble have been reaching out to our new members via and snail-mail, I would urge those divisions that also had new members sign on do the same. The vast majority of these new members signed on via the RailPass, so reaching these new members is vital to retaining them. One week after the Convention the Piedmont Division participated in the Train Rendezvous event at the Southern Museum of Railroad History in Kennesaw, GA. While tiring after a busy week, it was good to connect with the public. Congratulations to our newest MMR, Joe Nichols, Jr. The Piedmont Division recently extended term and consecutive years of service limits on its officers and directors. I had concerns that there would a shortage of candidates for our offices. I am happy to report that we have contests for all offices except two and eight members are running for four director positions. Finally this will be my last message in this space, as I will be concluding my term as Superintendent as I cannot run. It has been an interesting two years. I was riffed from my long time employer and fortunately eight months later landed my dream job which I have been enjoying for the past year. The five new MMR s who made the grade in these last two years has been especially gratifying. I look forward to my new status as P.O.M. (Plain Old Member) and look forward to seeing all of you at various S.E.R. events. 32 Division 12 Smoky Mountain News Larry Burkholder - labtexan@chartertn.net SEE YOUR RAILROAD CARD HERE $16/YEAR (FOUR ISSUES) The division held a regular quarterly meeting on August 8 th. Sixteen members and three guests attended. Besides our usual activities we had three representatives from Norfolk Southern's Central Division. Steve Forrest is a dispatcher who is also a big rail fan. He presented a series of his slides, mostly of the multitude of railroads servicing Memphis some years ago and what is happening in more modern times. He also had slides of dispatcher panels, showing how they have developed over the years. He discussed his dispatcher duties. He has agreed to present a clinic on Train Order Timetables at one of our future meetings. He was accompanied by Curt Dolan, Assistant Division Superintendent, and John Noe, Chief Division Dispatcher. A Q&A session followed Steve's presentation. Brian (right) is awarded 2nd Place by NMRA Module Contest Chairman Allen Gross, MMR SER Editor Photo pulling handmade excursion cars. Everything has mice in, on board, and around. Squeekville was started by Brian's father as a Christmas treat in 1936 and has been expanded many times over the years with Brian upgrading and modifying it significantly in the past few years. The timings for the various animated features are controlled by an old slowly rotating telephone switch cylinder. The climax of the cycle is a high-dive mouse plunging into a pool far below. The layout was a very big crowd attraction. SMD member, Allen Keller, offered his Bluff City Southern layout for operations as part of this year's NMRA convention and OPSIG program. The operations were offered on the opening Sunday of the convention for anyone coming to Atlanta from the eastern United States. Participants were from New Jersey, Virginia, and Tennessee. Members of the local Southern Switchmen operating group assisted. 32 Volume 54 #4.5 - E-SouthErneR - Fall 2013 Smoky Mountain Division member, Brian McWilliams, had his Squeekville layout on display at the national convention train show. He was honored to with a second prize for best individual module, although his module is overall 6 ft. by 9 ft. in size in two parts. Squeekville is a fantasy carnival layout populated by 350 three-inch hand made mouse figures. The layout contains a spectacular variety of all hand made functioning carnival rides. The layout is lit by 425 bulbs and has two railroads running an outside loop of Lionel 027 with 30's vintage passenger cars and an inside HO loop with Thomas Brian McWilliams Squeekville layout set up at the national trainshow. Both SER Editor photos The next quarterly Smoky Mountain Division meeting is tentatively set for November 14 th at the Bass Pro Shop off I-40, Exit 407. We meet for dinner at 6 pm, followed by the meeting at 7:15 pm. All are welcome. A program has not yet been set.

Home Cell Remembering Roy Tritt, MMR #235 Roy Tritt grew up with a love of trains. As a small boy his parents gave him a model train set that he played with constantly. Early pictures show Roy at about 5 years old playing with his set. He continued his love of trains through school and earned a business degree in 1971 and a law degree in 1974 from University of Georgia both with honors. He met his loving wife and companion Linda Peeples while at UGA. Roy entered a law practice in Augusta and worked with Georgia Railroad Bank and handled transactions for various railroads along with his usual law practice. Roy had two daughters, Debbie and Jennifer whom he also loved very much along with Jennifer s husband and two grandchildren who knew Roy as Papa Choo-Choo. Roy was an avid collector of railroad books, mostly collector books of southeastern railroads, as well as limited production brass locomotives and railroad paintings. The backyard contains a very large railroad baggage wagon that Roy bought in Tennessee and moved to his home. I met Roy while living in Augusta in We managed to reorganize the local model railroaders and petitioned the Southeastern Region of the NMRA to form the Central Savannah River Division and held monthly meetings, built a large HO layout in the local museum, and assisted in restoring a Mikado on display at the museum. Roy s guidance and organizational skills improved the group who hosted the SER/NMRA region convention in Roy was very successful with his law practice and very devoted to his family. In his leisure time he improved his modeling skills and earned AP awards in Association Volunteer (1986), Master Builder - Scenery (1988), Master Builder - Civil (1990), Association Official (1994), Chief Dispatcher (1995), Master Builder - Structures (1995), Master Builder Cars (1995) and received his MMR in May Roy served as Southeastern Region President from and as Treasurer from He also remained active as the Region s Legal Consultant for years. Roy Tritt was a great friend, model railroader, and organizer within the hobby. In recent years his failing eyesight and mobility issues prevented him from attending the conventions that he enjoyed so much. His insight, cheerful spirit, companionship and support will be greatly missed. - Joe Nichols, Jr., MMR #511 Volume 54 #4.5 - E-SouthErneR - Fall

Make your check payable to: Southeastern Region And Mail To: Alan Mole P.O. Box 2173 Suwanee, GA Division 14 Magnolia News Troy Hight - TrHg6@aol.com The second installment of the mini meet concept was hosted by the Magnolia Division on Saturday September 21, 2013 in Choctaw, MS. If you will allow me to modify a line from the movie Field of Dreams, "If you plan it, they will come". Teresa and I were amazed at the turnout for the mini meet weekend. A group of thirty, including spouses, gathered for the Friday dinner and all seven states in the Region were represented. If I counted correctly, over fifty people were in attendance at one point on Saturday afternoon. A special word of thanks goes out to the individuals that made the clinics possible. Clinicians were Master Model Railroader's (MMR) Bob Beaty and Peter Youngblood, along with Howard Goodwin, Walt Liles and the Magnolia Division's own, Cliff Powers. The variety and professionalism in which they were given would rival a region or national convention. Several of you left additional handouts for the benefit of future division activities and they were greatly appreciated and will be used. The early evening activities began with an open house at the home of Phillip Prince. Phillip's outdoor G-Scale Pearl River Railroad was constructed in the summer of 2011 and has matured well in the time since. Your host spent 3 hours on Thursday afternoon clearing the right of way and ballasting track to make the RR ready for operation. Unfortunately, heavy rains on Friday night, had an affect on the work done the prior day. The railroad encompasses over 700' of track and more than a dozen bridges, and 21 turnouts. Several local business's have been reproduced to achieve the feeling of the red clay hills of East Central Mississippi. Phillip is also a prolific gardener and his vast collection of roses generate almost as much attention as his railroad. Thank You for the invitation, Phillip. Our day concluded with a tour of the Historic Philadelphia Depot. This 1905 structure was built by the Gulf Mobile and Northern (GM&N) Railroad to serve the new timber industry that was beginning at the turn of the century. The Depot was purchased by the city in 2002 and currently serves as office space for several community organizations. Kaye Rowell and Tim Moore, our tourism and chamber of commerce directors, respectfully, coordinated the tour and supplied the "Blue" welcome bags for our out of state guest. This event would not have been successful without the help of my wife, Teresa. She served as tour guide and shopping coordinator for all of the wives that made the trip over for the weekend. We all have very understanding spouses when it comes to our hobby, many of them enjoy getting together as much as we do. I will end with a word of encouragement to the next division that is considering hosting a mini-meet. You can do this, too. All you need is the desire to organize a meeting and the willingness to ask for help. I literally had help from every corner of the region. Steve Prevette and I will be more than willing to share what worked for us as host and where to find the help you need to be successful. Lastly, To Glen, George, Bob, John and Dr. Joe, Sr. The layout design roundtable discussion was greatly appreciated and the first sketches have been made! Until next time!
