4 The VP s Keyboard Joe Gelmini It takes a great deal of effort from many people to keep the Southeastern Region progressing. Many folks regularly volunteer quite a bit of their time to assure we get the most from our NMRA investment. There is no better example of this spirit of volunteerism than the many hours of time donated by 60 Piedmont Division members in hosting the 2007 Trax To The Max SER Convention at Cartersville May If you were there you know what an outstanding convention it was. If you missed it well, you missed one of the best regional conventions ever. The convention clinics, trainshow, prototype tours, trackside banquet, home layout tours everything was just great. My thanks to the convention planning committee and all those who volunteered in providing us with such a wonderful event Something that greatly impressed me at Cartersville was the outstanding non-rail program. It was the best I ve seen at any convention regional or national. Many, many thanks to Lynn Nichols, Diana Watson, Kathy Gelmini and all the ladies that assisted in putting this splendid series of activities together. I now see more clearly the important connection a strong non-rail program has to a successful model train convention. It transforms the event from just another gathering of train freaks to an affair that families can look forward to attending together year after year. Take note future convention planning committees! And speaking of future conventions, our next SER convention will be hosted by Land-O-Sky Division at Lake Junaluska, NC, over Memorial Day weekend, Division super Fred Coleman gave us a look at what s in store for us next year in the Asheville area during our trackside banquet at Cartersville. There will be much more about this in upcoming SouthErneR issues, but it will certainly be a don t miss event. Earlier I mentioned the spirit of volunteerism that is the driving force behind all NMRA, SER and divisional activities. The region has been looking for someone to take over superintendent duties for the Palmetto Division. And sure enough, someone came through. Please join me in welcoming Bob Roof as the new Palmetto superintendent. Bob is a lifelong resident of Columbia, SC and is president of AM- ROC, Associated Model Railroads of Columbia. Recently I had the opportunity to meet Bob and take a tour of the AMROC club layouts. It was quite satisfying to see the work being done there and their efforts to promote model railroading in the Columbia area. I m sure Bob will bring the same level of enthusiasm to the entire Palmetto Division. Thanks, Bob, for stepping up! Until next time, may all your signals be green! $16 / 4 ISSUES 1/18th PAGE 3/10 Chesapeake and Ohio Railway 6/08 Ashland, Huntington and Hinton Divisions Modeled in N Scale Mike and Kathy Devaney - Owners 4 E-SouthErneR 2007 Keheley Lake Southern Connecting Routes with Rex & Clayton Southern and Shamrock Southern Len Polinsky Mike Callahn, MMR lenpolinsky@bellsouth.net General Manager Design Engineer 3/08

Mid-May in Cartersville presented us with three glorious days of sunshine and cool temperatures that made for a memorable convention and an equally memorable banquet. The tents were almost unnecessary to enjoy the banquet, which was good as the banquet was oversold and several people including the Editor chose to eat outside the tent. For an added treat, a crescent moon marched across the sky with the planet Venus seemingly in-tow. Photo by Ron Gough, MMR E-SouthErneR

The decision by the Piedmont Division crew to bring in outside clinicians coupled with moving layout tours to before and after the convention really paid off in clinic room attendance. No one likes to give a clinic to an empty room as has happened in the past! (Hint) E-SouthErneR

17 The Non-rail Trax to the Max By Lynn Nichols What a nice convention! A record number of women attended the Trax to the Max SER Convention in Cartersville, Georgia May We were educated and entertained by special non-rail guests including Brenda Cusker who presented a fantastic clinic on Antique Collectibles, Lorraine Garner who patiently taught us to make wonderful yo yo crafts, Carol Beaty who wowed us with her absolutely professional, hands-on Rediscovering the Gourd clinic, and Derrie Hodge who masterfully and hilariously conducted a blind auction. We also visited local antique shops, the Booth Western Museum, Barnsley Gardens, the William Weinman Mineral Museum and more! The weather was perfect, the railroaders were happy, and the local volunteers were great. We reveled in old friendships and began some new ones, which of course, is the ultimate outcome of any good SER convention! All photos on this page by Ron Gough, MMR Top & Left A large number of non-rails attended this year s convention and they were treated to an outstanding non-rail clinic and tour program which was very successful. Here we see the Gourd painting clinic that was put on by Carol Beaty. The weather was perfect for outdoor events such as this and the banquet later that night. Cool temperatures and picture perfect cloudless skies graced us all weekend. E-SouthErneR

22 2007 SER Contest Report By SER Contest Chairman Joe Nichols, Jr. Last year I was appointed as the Contest Chairman for the SER after many years of fine leadership by Carey Jenkins. My role in Memphis was only possible with the support of Dean Belowich, the Education Chairman, and George Gilbert, the Achievement Program Chairman, and Paul Voelker, the tireless Photo Contest Chairman who sat through the entire convention in the contest room. This year I had more time to prepare but only slightly more experience. The NMRA Contest is an excellent education tool for the contest modelers. The convention attendees can learn a great deal in the contest room but never as much as the entrants. The NMRA Contest is a labor of love for the judges who get very little credit for their hours of work. I would like to express special thanks this year to Dean Belowich, MMR, Howard Garner, George Gilbert, Glen Hall, Bob Beaty, MMR, Joe Nichols, Sr., MMR, Sam Swanson, Scott Matherly, Paul Voelker (Photo contest), and Rhonda Povlot/Carol Beaty/Lorraine Garner/Kathy Gelmini (Arts and Crafts). The statistics for this year s SER contest are: 40 entries in the NMRA judged Model Contest 25 entries in the Photo Contest 3 entries in Arts & Crafts 7 entries for Display only 7 entries for AP judging 6 in the Private Car Theme Contest 3 in the Favorite Train Contest 95 Total entries There were 25 Merit Awards earned from the 41 entries. My plans as Contest Chairman now are: 1. A short group of articles for The SouthErneR describing each SER Award, its criteria and all previous winners. 2. To arrange with all future region conventions to have the contest rooms open for registration by noon Friday and closed by 9AM on Saturday. All contest entries will remain in the Contest Room until the end of breakfast Sunday morning to allow viewing of the judges scoring. 3. To work with the AP Chairman to present all Merit Awards during the convention. 4. To clarify the credentialing for region level judging with the help of the AP and Education Chairman as well as the National Contest Chairman. I would like to thank the region for the opportunity to serve as Contest Chairman, for the wonderful modelers who make the contests rewarding, and always, for the expertise of our judges. I hope that every member will consider entering a model in the contest during the Smokey Mountain Rails 2008 Convention! 22 E-SouthErneR 2007

The photos at Left and both bottom photos show the well populated contest room. To my knowledge, this may have been the largest turnout of judged contest entries ever at a SouthEastern Region convention. It did make judging a challenge given the contest hours available but the format worked well enough to use for future conventions. 24 E-SouthErneR 2007 All photos on this page by Ron Gough, MMR

46 Above The Cartersville Depot, site of the Saturday night banquet as seen from the highway bridge just north of the station. Left The tents covering the banquet seating area just south of the station on Saturday morning. As the weather was outstanding all weekend, the tents almost were unneeded but they did give a festive atmosphere to the event. Right Another view of the huge number of people attending the banquet Saturday night. Your Editor chose to sit next to the steps seen in the far back center (behind the twin tent poles) of this photo and under the stars. Seated with me was old friend Tom Hansen, MMR from the SunShine Region (Florida) who elected to attend our convention rather than the SSR s which was held over the same weekend. 46 E-SouthErneR 2007

47 Above A view of some of the almost 290 attendees that were at the banquet making this one of the largest attended banquets in the history of the South- Eastern Region. Smiling at the cameraman are two former SER Directors - Mike Ferry (white shirt) and Mike Braunstein. Two tables back is Gulf Division Superintendent Glen Hall wearing his vest and hat. Your Editor isn t the only one in the region that wears a real hat! Above - A spectacular view of the Moon & Venus. Ron got a better photo of this spectacular site than I did. It really was something to see. Right - Mike Deaton conducted a special raffle for an unclaimed door prize, a Digitrax DCC Zephyr power pack, held by Zana Ireland of Digitrax, cosponsor of this year s convention. Believe it or not, this prize was unknowingly avoided by all who picked their own door prizes because of the category it was placed in! E-SouthErneR

48 Above Convention Chair Howard Horn Goodwin kicks off the festivities at the banquet. Seated at the table from left are: Keynote Speaker Leslie Eaton, MMR, Carol & SER Prez Bob Beaty, MMR, Piedmont Div. Super. Bob & Connie McIntyre. Right The evening was capped off with the usual region auction with Horn Goodwin conducting the bidding as the auctioneer. In the background are his helpers, SER Vice President Joe Gelmini (white shirt) and fellow Piedmont member Scott Perry. Below Right SER Contest Chairman Joe Nichols Jr. reads off the list of model and arts & crafts contests winners. Below Left Trax To The Max committee members Diane & Randall Watson and George Bloodworth. 48 E-SouthErneR 2007

49 Clockwise from Top Keynote Speaker Leslie Eaton, MMR eyes the cameraman as a CSX train passes in the background. The tracks were just on the other side of the fence behind the podium. Leslie talks about modeling trains as a young girl with her father and then later in life, after her interest is rekindled, how she attained her goal of being a Master Model Railroader. SER Editor Paul Voelker, after reading off the photo contest winners, changed hats and presented Convention Co-Chair Charlie Crawford with this year s well-deserved Dave Muller Award. E-SouthErneR
