5 Miami and the Beaches As the gateway to Latin America there is an almost tangible vibrancy and colour that will draw you to the waterborne city and beaches of Miami. 6 Sunny Isles Beach The resort community of Sunny Isles Beach is the perfect holiday choice for so many reasons. Actually a tropical barrier island between the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean, TripAdvisor contributors rated it THE number 1 US holiday destination. Why? One reason may be their redevelopment renaissance. The 1950 s style motels and small beachfront hotels have given way to luxury hotels and resorts. Developers like Donald Trump are investing big in Florida s Riviera all to the visitors benefit. 7 Fort Lauderdale Greater Fort Lauderdale sits at the very centre of South Florida s Gold Coast, halfway between Palm Beach and Miami. The area encompasses Hollywood and Hallendale Beach to the south and as far north as Pompano and Deerfield Beach. Known as the Venice of America due to its intricate and expansive canal system, Fort Lauderdale is a major yachting centre with a vibrant marina lifestyle. The city has 300 miles of navigable inland waterways and is home port to some 44,000 yachts. There are unlimited opportunities for water sports on a Fort Lauderdale holiday. 9 Tampa Bay All the variety of Florida is found along Tampa Bay. Sure, there is water and sun that s a given, but a visit to Tampa Bay stretches way beyond the rays and waves. One of our all time favourite places to visit is Lowry Park Zoo, home to the David A. Straz Jr. Manatee Hospital, which is specifically dedicated to the treatment of sick, injured and orphaned manatees. You ll see these 3,000 pound wonders up close and personal and the keepers are more than happy to speak about the continuing work to save and protect these gentle giants. We promised this story wasn t about man-made attractions, but forgive us for Busch Gardens Tampa Bay where the rugged beauty of the Serengeti meets out-of-this-world rides like the fierce and floorless coaster SheiKra. The new Jungala area is four acres of fun with a zip line through the rain forest and animal encounters with Bengal tigers and orang-utans. Dine al fresco at Ybor City, Tampa s historic and vibrant Latin Quarter where you mingle among flamenco dancers and cigar vendors. And no trip to Tampa would be complete without a shopping expedition or two to International Plaza and Bay Street. 11 Sarasota And Her Islands Though the area is renowned for its award-winning Gulf of Mexico beaches, visitors are captivated by what they find beyond the powder white sands, scenic sunsets and warm waves - a world rich with culture and entertainment.
