Familiarization Tours and Site Inspections If time allows, we encourage you to visit Pigeon Forge prior to your event. Location Pigeon Forge is located 12 miles off Interstate 40, an easy drive by motorcoach, van or car. Our town is within a day's drive of two-thirds of the U.S. population east of the Mississippi River. Driving Yourself Pigeon Forge is 33 miles southeast of Knoxville, four miles south of Sevierville and five miles north of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Interstates I-75, I-40 and I-81 are connected to town by State Route 66 and U.S. Highways 441, 411, 448 and 321. Tennessee law requires all occupants of motor vehicles to wear seat belts. The state also has a mandatory child restraint law that requires children, infant to 12 years of age, to be secured in a child safety seat and/or in the backseat of the vehicle. It is against the law to text and drive in Tennessee. Cell phone use while driving is allowed in Tennessee, unless you have a learner s permit. In that case, cell phone use is banned. Average daytime temperatures in the summer are around 84 degrees; winter daytime averages are a moderate 40 degrees. The atmosphere in Pigeon Forge lends itself to casual attire, no matter what activity you choose. Light clothing works best for summer, while layering is best for winter months. If you re heading to the mountains, be sure to take a jacket. Temperatures become cooler at higher elevations, even in summer. Time Zone Pigeon Forge is in the Eastern Time Zone. Tennessee changes to Daylight Savings Times in March and reverts to Eastern Standard Time in November. Fun Time Trolley Service Pigeon Forge Fun Time Trolleys offer the easiest and most affordable way to travel around town. Trolleys depart from Patriot Park and run regular routes through town. For a modest fare, groups can ride to more than 200 official stops throughout Pigeon Forge, including Dollywood. Trolleys are equipped to accommodate passengers in wheelchairs. 23 42 43 PLANNER NOTES Planner Notes & Tour Planning Services Pigeon Forge History ESCORT NOTES The earliest recorded history of what is now Pigeon Forge was when the Cherokee and other Eastern tribes of American Indians used the area for hunting grounds. The first white settlers began arriving around By 1820, Isaac Love established and was operating a furnace and iron forge near one of two mills along the Little Pigeon River. The name Pigeon Forge is a combination of the iron works and the river that flows through town. The river s name refers to the vast number of now-extinct passenger pigeons that fed along the river. By the early 1900s, Pigeon Forge was a hub of activity with businesses clustered around the Old Mill, including a bottling shop, cannery and blacksmith shop. Great Smoky Mountains began luring visitors to the area by the 1930s, and guest cottages began springing up along the river. Today, millions of guests visit Pigeon Forge each year. Historic-Marker Driving Tour Our Smoky Mountain town has a rich history. You can learn interesting facts about Pigeon Forge by driving to various historical markers placed throughout town. Park Trails Bicycling and Horseback Riding Whatever your hiking skills are, the park has trails for everyone to enjoy. While there are no designated bicycling trails in the national park, Cades Cove Loop Road is an exceptional place for cyclers.
