Tham Khao Yoi is located to the east of Khao Yoi near the Khao Yoi District Office, some 22 km. before reaching Phetchaburi provincial town on Highway 4 between km Inside is enshrined an immense reclining Buddha image as well as several other Buddha images of various sizes and in different postures, similar to Tham Khao Luang and Wat Tham

8 Khao Bandai It in Amphoe Mueang Phetchaburi. History has it that these images have long existed and were later restored by Phrakhru On of Wat Thai Talat. According to historical tales, when King Rama IV was still ordained and went on his Austere Practices, he came to stop for an insight development in front of Khao Yoi and moved to sit in meditation in Tham Khao Yoi for many nights. Thai Song Dam or Lao Song Cultural Centre is located at Mu 5 Tambon Khao Yoi, approximately 1 km. beyond the Khao Yoi Intersection toward Phetchaburi provincial town, on Highway 4. Turn left at the entrance to Ban Wang School for 300 m. The Thai Song Dam or Lao Song is an ethnic minority whose origin was Dien Bien Phu in North Vietnam, bordering with Laos. They migrated to settle in Thailand over 200 years ago and have a unique culture. They wear black and have their own spoken and written languages. The Thai Song Dam people are skilled in weaving cloth and basketry. The majority of them live in Phetchaburi. In April every year, the Thai Song Dam Tradition will be held for their merriment in different villages on a rotary basis. The Cultural Centre exhibits the Lao Song way of life in the past for later generations to learn. It also puts on exhibition tools and utensils used in their daily life, models of their houses, original scripts, cloth weaving demonstration, and sales of souvenirs such as clothes, handbags, and ornaments. It is open daily during 8.30 a.m p.m. Admission is free. Amphoe Ban Laem Mangrove Ecological Conservation and Study Centre Bang Tabun Witthaya School is located inside Bang Tabun Witthaya School on the way to Ao Bang Tabun. The mangrove forest here covers a total area of approximately 40 rai and is well-preserved to be in quite a perfect condition. The

9 school had a partly wooden boardwalk and partly concrete walkway built to form a nature study route of about 150 m. long into the mangrove forest, where there is dense population of flora and fauna. Among them are samae (Avicennia plants), Kongkang or mangroves (Rhizophora plants), Chakhram (Suaeda maritima), and crab-eating macaques, crawling fish, crabs, etc. In the rainy season, the gleams of fireflies can be seen. Interested persons may contact the Bang Tabun Witthaya School in advance at Tel or Achan Chomphunut at Tel A boat ride to enjoy the way of life along the Phetchaburi River and shoreline fishery is available, with a local youth guide provided. Laem Leo is located about 1 km. from Amphoe Ban Laem on the way from Ban Laem to Bang Tabun. It is where a fisherman s village is located, with a wooden bridge running past the village to seaside restaurants. The area is also home to a large herd of macaques that always come to be fed by passers-by. Wat Ton Son is one of Ban Laem s major temples located on the Phetchaburi River. It serves as the community s centre for various cultural activities and houses the much revered Buddha image of Luangpho Samrit. The temple also houses a statue of the Prince of Chumphon standing almost back to back with a life-like image of Luangpho Thuat. There is a high concrete bridge across the river in front of the temple, with a Thai style pavilion where the scenery of the fisherman s village and fleet of fishing boats can be admired. Around the temple, tall buildings were constructed for swallows to nest as an investment in the bird s nest business. Wat Nai Klang was built under royal instruction of King Taksin the Great in dedication to his mother who was a native of Ban Laem. This old temple is at least 200 years old and contains various structures of the late Ayutthaya period; such as, chedi, windowless ubosot with a single front door, monk s cells, preaching hall, belfry, etc. The temple also houses Luangpho Sukhothai, a much revered Buddha image in the gesture of subduing Mara dating from the Sukhothai period. Among the distinctive architecture of Wat Nai Klang is a teakwood Sala Kan Parian or preaching hall which underwent restoration by means of dismantling and reconstructing. The building is believed to have formerly been a throne hall in the reign of King Thaisa of the Kingdom of Ayutthaya. Later, King Taksin the Great had it dismantled, taken from

10 Ayutthaya, and reconstructed at Wat Nai Klang. The reconstruction followed ancient techniques, using mainly wooden bolts and partly Chinese nails to fasten all parts together. The preaching hall is supported by octagonal columns with brackets intricately carved into unique and graceful Naga heads to support the eaves. The brackets at this temple have become a prototype for other temples. Wat Khao Takhrao is in Tambon Bang Khrok, 10 km. along Highway 3176 from Phetchaburi provincial town across the railway tracks near Phetchaburi Railway Station. A large entrance gate to the temple will be seen on the left. Turn left for another 3 km. This temple is where Luangpho Khao Tukhrao, a Buddha image in the gesture of subduing Mara measuring 72.5 cm. high and 53 cm. wide is enshrined. The hilltop image hall where the sacred Buddha image is housed is accessible by a cable car. According to history, Luangpho Khao Takhrao was one of the 3 brother Buddha images, in addition, to Luangpho Sothon in Chachoengsao province and Luangpho Ban Laem in Samut Songkhram province. Some texts even said there were 5 brother Buddha images which also include Luangpho Bang Phli Yai and Luangpho Wat Rai Khing in Nakhon Pathom. The story of this Buddha image began in the late Ayutthaya period when the people of Ban Laem, who later became the ancestors of the people of Samut Songkhram, fled the Burmese troops to settle at the Mae Klong Estuary. On a fishing trip one day, a fisherman from Ban Laem obtained with his fishing net 2 Buddha images; one standing holding an alms bowl and the other seated in the subduing Mara posture. The standing one was taken to be enshrined at Wat Ban Laem, currently known as Wat Phetchasamut, located in the heart of Samut Songkhram province. The other one was given to his relatives from Bang Tabun who took it to be housed at Wat Khao Takhrao, Amphoe Ban Laem, Phetchaburi province. Laem Luang or Laem Phak Bia is in Tambon Laem Phak Bia, 20 km. from Amphoe Mueang Phetchaburi along the same route to, but with a left turn slightly before reaching, Hat Chao Samran. It features a sandy cape stretching for 2 km. into the sea, and a good spot for viewing the sunrise as well as sunset. Visitors may ride a long-tail boat to the tip of the cape, taking approximately half an hour. Boat rental is Bt350 with a capacity of 8-10 persons. Further southward is Tham Phra Phutthasaiyat where there is a large reclining Buddha image and, in the corner of the cave, an old wooden vaulted covering of a boat which was presented to Achan Saeng by Phrachao Suea. In addition to these, there are Tham Phra Athit, Tham Phra Chan, Tham Sawang Arom, Tham Chang Phueak, and Tham Duke named after

17 Duke Johann Alberkt, Regent of Braunschweig, Germany, who once visited Phetchaburi and this cave. Tham Khao Luang is situated on top of Khao Luang, some 5 km. from Khao Wang. Khao Luang is a small mountain of 92 m. high. From the foot of the mountain, there are flights of concrete steps leading to the entrance down to the cave where there are beautiful stalagmites and stalactites, and a chimney through which a ray of sunlight shines and lightens up the cave. Tham Khao Luang is regarded as the largest and most important Tham Khao Luang

18 cave of Phetchaburi. It is where King Rama IV s royal Buddha image, built under the instruction of King Rama V the Great in dedication to his father who used to visit and be pleased with this cave, is enshrined. Tham Khao Luang comprises 5 chambers containing a replica of the Buddha s footprint in Saraburi constructed by King Rama IV, 14-m. long reclining Buddha image, 3 large wooden Buddha images and replica of a chedi at Wat Khao Bandai It. Wat Mahathat Worawihan

19 On the right near the entrance to the foot of the Khao Luang, there is a large attractive temple known among the locals as Wat Tham Klaep. Its current name is Wat Bun Thawi. Its large study hall was designed and constructed by the abbot who is also a craftsman. Its ordination hall s door panels are made from intricately carved wood. According to legend, the entrance of Tham Klaep in this temple was a gateway to Mueang Laplae, a mysterious town with only female inhabitants. However, this is only a legend that has been told by the people of Phetchaburi for hundreds of years. Wat Mahathat Worawihan is situated on the Phetchaburi River, approximately 500 m. from the City Hall. The temple contains a 5 tower principal Prang built in the ancient Khmer style. Each of the Prang towers was built from laterite. The large principal tower is 42 m. high and houses the Lord Buddha s relics. Other buildings of interest include Phra Ubosot, Wihan Luang, and various pavilions that are all decorated with stucco reliefs of the Mueang Phet School, which are beautiful and unique. It was formerly a Khmer sanctuary in Hinduism, but adapted into a Buddhist temple in the Mahayana Sect and Theravada Sect, respectively. Originally, it comprised 5 laterite prang towers; only 4 of them remain at present. It is assumed that each tower was dedicated to and housed an image of a Hindu god; such as, Shiva, Visnu, Brahma, and Uma. This is based on the fact that an image of Goddess Uma or Parvati was discovered in a tumbled tower in When it was adapted to become a Buddhist temple, an ordination hall was constructed. However, the original surroundings were slightly changed as evident from the remaining laterite wall. Hat Chao Samran has been a beach of historical importance since ancient times. According to legend, Nang Phanthurat, a giant, took Phra Sang as her adopted son; she and her followers appeared as humans in disguise. One day, Phra Sang clandestinely entered a restricted area, dipped himself into a gold well, put on a negrito costume to hide his gold plated body, took a magical object, and flew away. Phanthurat, upon her return, could not find Phra Sang and went searching for him. She unsuccessfully pleaded him to return with her and died from pent-up sorrow. Phetchaburi s legend has it that, when Phanthurat died, Phra Sang held a cremation for her and her corpse turned into a mountain known among the locals as Khao Nang Non or Khao Nang Phanthurat. The topography of the forest park features limestone mountains surrounded by mixed deciduous forest and dry evergreen forest. Lying in the north-south direction, the beauty of the immense mountains can be seen from the highway. The range looks very much like a sleeping female giant (Nang Phanthurat). To the south, there is a so-called Kot Nang Phanthurat or Phanthurat s urn. There are also natural sculptures related to the Sang Thong legend. A nature trail of 3.5 km. long has been provided, with interesting spots along the route; namely, Yot Men, Krachok Nang Phanthurat, Lan Kueak Kaeo, Bo Chup Tua Phra Sang, as well as bird-watching site, viewpoint, giant banyan tree at Hup Wang Ruea, and stalactites in the forms of a large footed tray in Tham Mayom, the Great Wall, etc. Moreover, the Forest Park contains a historical site known as Boran Sathan Thung Setthi, an ancient monument located at the foot to the east of Khao Chom Prasat. It features remains of a large brick and stucco chedi with clay mortar, where stucco reliefs and artefacts were unearthed. According to the finds, Boran Sathan Thung Setthi
