5 General Information Directional Support Staff Sojourn staff on the route should not impede the flow of traffic or attempt to control/stop traffic in any way. Directional support is there to make sure the riders cross when it is safe to do so. Only Police, Fire and DOT are authorized to control traffic. Bike riders don t cross traffic from a stopped position as quickly as a pedestrian, so allow for a larger gap in traffic before signaling that it is safe to cross Do not leave the position until the last sweep rider has passed by Please make sure you understand your location and how you will get there and back to camp. Please see Rob/Tom/Brian to confirm your location the day prior. Sweep / Safety Riders Sweep riders are to ride with the last groups of riders. The very last sweep rider should always stay with/behind the last known rider. Let the water/lunch stop staff know that you are the tail end of the ride. Safety riders are to ride spread throughout the middle of the pack of riders. All Sweep/Safety riders should not ride too close to each other, but spread out amongst the sojourner riders to offer support. Make sure that you have a small first aid kit with you when riding. Campsite Management List Port-a-johns are in place and shower truck is operational RTC & Info Tents are setup and have needed equipment Water buffalo is in place and working Campsite games are in place Power is working at all locations, RTC power cords are in place Tent layout is appropriate Signup lists are available Merch is available White boards are placed and updated 4

6 General Information RTC and D&L Info Tents The info tents will be the central hub for campsite management. Sojourners (not already signed up for a kayak tour) may sign up for the evening or afternoon #2 tour on Day 1 & 2, and may also sign up for the Walking Meditation Tour. The massage signup list will be at the tent, but the masseuse will eventually move that to their tent and you can direct folks there to sign up. RTC Info Tent will also sell RTC merchandise Whiteboard with evening & following day s schedule and locations (departure time) Maps (limited supply, don t give out to riders) Tent also serves as the merchandise table. All RTC Staff need to know how to use Square for purchases. Need a power drop at the tent for powering the ipad and a lantern Staff Tents from Comfy Campers: These are expected to be set up between 3:00pm and 4:00pm each day. A note about scheduling: Some times listed will vary based on the expected duration of other elements happening before them. Some elements will go longer than their expected times. Things like tours, activities and other contracted organizations have more fixed times that are less flexible. Assignments are listed as to when the role is active, and best to arrive to the location prior to the start time in order to get everything setup an in place. Before you breakdown a water stop, lunch location or depart a Course Direction Support role make sure that ALL sweep riders have passed by and that there are no more riders on the route. The last rider will tell you they are the tail end of the ride. Permits / Police / Community / Media All RTC staff have digital copies of permits. Rob will have the hard copies with him. If you are approached by any police officer, city official or person requesting a permit immediately call Tom, Rob or Brandi. Brandi Horton is RTC s primary media spokesperson. If you are approach by the media or city official please pass along her cell phone number to them. 5

7 General Information Water Stops and Lunch Locations Equipment for each Water Stop is: Table, 2 coolers, snacks, electrolyte drink mix, trash bags, first aid kit, gloves Ice to be picked up on the way to the stop Tent is preferred but optional Leads for these locations should make sure to reach out to Tom or Rob for equipment pickup once they are done, and have their bike with Maps Maps are oriented with NORTH being at the top of the page and SOUTH at the bottom. 15 Rider Support Number Protocol Incoming Messages For serious / life threatening medical emergencies dial 911 first. The Rider Support Number (RSN) is distributed to all riders and staff/volunteers at the sojourn. This number is the primary number riders should call if they need to speak with a Sojourn Staff person. This number will ring to the phones of 6 RTC Staff cell phones. Riders are instructed to use this number for most concerns while on the sojourn broken bikes, minor medical issues, inability to continue riding, lost, etc. Once the emergency is being taken care of, then call the Rider Support Number to inform staff. Sojourn Staff should use individual contact numbers for Logistical and Customer Service matters for direct communication. The RSN uses the Google Voice Platform. If a rider texts this number the message is turned into an and sent to Rob. He will check this when possible, but do not indicate to riders that this is an appropriate communication method. 14

16 Rider Notification System # Protocol Outgoing Messages For serious / life threatening medical emergencies dial 911 first. The Rider Notification System (RNS) will be used to send text messages to riders and Sojourn Staff. The messages are sent as standard text messages. Limited staff will have access to this platform. If you come across a major issue that needs to be communicated out to riders please call Brandi, Tom, Rob or Suzanne directly. The RNS will only be used to communicate if there are any issues that all riders need to be made aware of (ex: lighting, course closure, inclement weather, route obstruction, wild animal, etc.) A Welcome/Test message will be sent the morning of June 10 th Riders may respond to text messages, however it is best to call into the Rider Support Number for any issues. Note: 5% of riders opted out of receiving messages. If you receive an RNS message don t assume all the riders around you did. EZ Text is the platform we are using for this. 15

20 Glossary of Terms Active: Lunch/water stop/etc. means the station is ready to receive and support riders. Setup is complete. Lead: Responsible for setup, management and breakdown of an element. Ex: Campsite Lead, Water Stop Lead, Tour Lead POC: Point of Contact. Similar to Lead. Medical Incident: Illness, injury, etc. are always referred to as incidents. Emergency Medical Incident: Internal use only, for serious medical issues that require immediate medical attention (ex. Broken bones, severe injury, heart/head injuries, heat stroke, etc.). Non-emergency Medical Incident: Do not require immediate medical attention (sprained ankle, pulled muscle, sore knee, chaffing, etc.) Support Staff: Person who provides additional support to an area/responsibility and reports back to a Lead. Ex: Course Direction Support - Sojourn Staff who is positioned at a road crossing to provided guidance and information for riders. Note: Staff should not act as traffic control officers and direct traffic/vehicles in any way. Only police and Dept. of Transportation employees are authorized to do so. Breakdown: All equipment is packed up and ready for pickup, trash is cleaned up and bagged, misc. PA System: Public address system or speaker system. Audio amplification. 27 Hugh Moore Park Day 1: Arrival Procedures Procedures 1. Riders will first encounter the Parking Support Staff they will be guided to park and instructed to check in after parking. 1. D&L Staff will determine how best to park the cars and areas. 2. Riders will proceed to the check in at the table located at the Pavilion 3. Riders will move to the SWAG Bag table to get their bag. Riders will be instructed to: 1. Attach the bands to their bike, luggage, & wrist 2. Drop off their luggage at Luggage Truck parked near the facilities building 3. Fill up water bottles (next to Luggage Truck) 4. Use the restroom BEFORE going to the buses 5. Ride their bike over to the Bus Loading area 6. Riders will NOT see their luggage again until the EOD, carry everything you need with you for the first day of riding Those without bikes can walk to Bus Loading or they can be transported via golf cart. Approx. 1 mile away. Water stop set up near the luggage truck. Luggage loading truck set up near the facilities building. Tom to transport and divide snacks among the buses. 26

31 Glen Summit Day 1: Start Procedures Pocono Bike Truck will arrive here directly and start to setup bikes for pickup. Two Pocono Biking Staff will be onsite with a bike rental list and will manage the distribution of bikes to riders that rented. Water Station Coolers will be placed on the back of the RTC Pickup to be filled by Bob Selvagio at Hugh Moore Park prior to arriving to Glen Summit. Truck will arrive with the first bus, and set up the coolers immediately for use. Coolers will be moved to another vehicle once the RTC Pickup departs for course operations. Coolers should be taken by Pocono Biking staff at the end of the Start Area and delivered to Sam Miller Field Bus Captains switch to next role once their bus has dropped off the riders at Glen Summit Tom will set up the signage for the first day of riding on Saturday, June 9. Riders are to depart once they are ready. Do not hold them at the start to wait for later buses. Individuals may wait if friends/family are on later buses. The goal is to have the riders start as soon as possible so the trail is not crowded. Water Stop #3 is unsupported by Sojourn Staff. It is at the Rockport Access of Lehigh Gorge State Park. 33 Glen Summit to Jim Thorpe Day 1: Route Procedures Riders will depart the Black Diamond Trailhead in Glen Summit once they are ready. We do not do a mass rider departure in order to keep the trailhead from getting too crowded. Water Stop #1 is at this trailhead. Riders will have a very simple ride to White Haven. There is one road crossing that is easy to manage. White Haven may be a bit busier with traffic than usual this weekend, but the police will be at the main intersection. Local officials and media have been invited to greet the riders as they come off the trail at the north end of town. Riders have a variety of restaurant options for lunch. Pocono Biking has a storefront on the trail at the south end of town and we will have Water Stop #2 there no snacks needed. White Haven to Glen Onoko will not have cell service. This is the in the Lehigh Valley Gorge. Park Rangers patrol the area frequently. Water Stop #3 is unsupported at the Rockport Access area in the Lehigh Valley Gorge State Park. The trail is well maintained and easy to follow at this point. Riders will exit the trail just before the train station in Jim Thorpe and end their ride at the Pocono Biking storefront downtown. Riders will then be given instructions on making their way up the hill to the campsite at Sam Miller Field. The hills are steep so be prepared to help riders with this. 32

38 Jim Thorpe Day 1: Hill Procedures Pocono Biking has a storefront in downtown Jim Thorpe immediately adjacent to the trail. This will be used as our end point for the day s ride. Signage and staff support should be gathered here. Jim Thorpe has a very steep hill to get from the trail to the campsite. There are two routes, Packer Hill Ave or Opera House Hill Road, and both are difficult to ride. Packer Hill Ave is steeper, but shorter, and more direct to the campsite. Hill Road is still steep, but longer and wider, and a longer route to the campsite. Sojourn Staff will be stationed at Pocono Biking to greet the riders as they come in, explain the two options of routes to get to the campsite. There will be a large printed map for explaining the camp route Riders may lock their bikes at Pocono Biking if they don t want to walk them up the hill. Pocono Biking staff on hand to assist with locking up bikes. Bikes are left outside of Pocono overnight frequently and are safe. RTC nor Pocono make any guarantees though. People who left their lock in their luggage will need to retrieve it from camp A shuttle bus will be able to take people to the camp only if they are unable to walk up the hill. Limited service only for necessity, not a convenience shuttle. 37

52 Jim Thorpe to Hugh Moore Park Day 2: Route Procedures Day 2 will have us depart the Bridge Dedication in Jim Thorpe and immediately hit the rockiest part of the trail. The trail is not finished for a short section and riders may be required to walk their bikes over this area. Once they get onto the rideable trail it is a bit roughly than the rest of the D&L Trail is but becomes nicely groomed shortly after this. This day has the majority of the road riding sections with a few small sections before lunch. We ride through the town of Weissport with our first major turn. Note: the continuation of the trail on the east side of the river and the turn that must be made (next page). After lunch in Northampton the riders will encounter the largest section of roads, approx. 6 miles. Catasauqua has several turns with lots of intersections so double check the route. We are riding through town, and remind sojourners to obey all traffic signals. Once through Catasauqua they will encounter a longer, but straight stretch of riding, in Allentown with minimal turns. Traffic is more significant and on faster roads in Allentown. Water Stop 1 at the Slatington Trailhead will be very easy to spot, as will lunch at Canal St Park (Northampton). The 2 nd Water Stop in Sand Island is more tricky, as it will be off of the trail in a larger park. Signage is needed to make sure riders don t miss it. There are bathrooms and other facilities (even a coffee shop) at this park. There is a section of stairs on the trail here, but riders can easily avoid it by riding around them into the parking lot. 73 HMP to Washington Crossing Day 3: Route Procedures Trails Riders are on two trails this day. D&L Canal, on the PA side of the Delaware River. D&R Trail on the NJ side of the Delaware River Riders cross into New Jersey at Frenchtown, NJ Riders cross back into PA at Lambertville, NJ & New Hope, PA. Misc. 4.5 Miles south east of Hugh Moore Park is a small section of trail that frequently floods, although it remains passable. Rob will scout the day prior. Riders will depart Hugh Moore Park and will be on the trail with no real turns until lunch. Water Stop #1 is easily visible from the trail, but does not have restrooms. It s a little bit more remote than our other stops. After WS #1 the riders will be on the trail for a bit with no major roads or turns. Once they get to Uhlerstown they will have a sharp turn that is easily missed. The trail is right next to private property here and is set back from the river a bit. Riders will have a short section on River Road immediately before the Frenchtown-Uhlerstown Bridge. Traffic may be fast here with no road shoulder, but good visibility. The bridge walking path is fairly narrow and riders may need to walk their bikes (look for signs). Once in Frenchtown there are plenty of restaurants right at the end of the bridge for lunch and the town is setting up port-a-johns for us in the park, as well as a welcome table/tent. It s easy to get back on the trail and head south, now on the D&R Trail. The D&R Trails is easy to stay on with no roads to deal with. Bull s Island Rec Area is Water Stop #2 w/ a port-a-john and the trail rides through the parking lot. Be on the lookout for some cars, but not heavy traffic. Our Water Stop will be set up here. Our riders CANNOT use the main building for bathrooms, but ADA can if needed. There is a foot bridge across the river that is a great view, however riders should not cross this bridge to continue south. Riders will continue south on the D&R Trail after Bull s Island Rec Area and the turns onto the bridge at Lambertville are easy to see and well marked. The turn onto the D&L Trail fairly sharp and riders need to turn left and head south. The trail narrows here a great deal because of buildings and the lock. The stairs are immediately after the very narrow section. There is grass on either side and riders can walk their bikes, but some folks may need assistance. 72

74 HMP to Washington Crossing Day 3: Route Procedures New Hope (cont.) Immediately after the stairs there is a road crossing at a bend in the road with no crosswalk. Riders will need assistance with crossing here, and direction back onto the trail. The road here has a curve to it and traffic goes faster than it should, so be cautious with crossing this road. The D&L Trail picks back up very shortly after the stairs, but it s a little bit hard to see so make sure riders cross the road right after the stairs and the trail connection is a few yards south of that through what looks like someone s personal driveway. If you go around the curve you ve gone too far. Once back on the trail it s a straight ride to the campsite, which is on your left hand side. The main central area of the campsite will be visible from the trail and impossible to miss. 76 HMP to Wash. Crossing Day 3: Uhlerstown - Frenchtown Uhlerstown Rd, west of Frenchtown. Riders go under a covered bridge on the trail, and then turn around to get onto the actual road. Private property makes this tricky. Route 32 is brief, but busy with no shoulder to ride on. Uhlerstown Hill Road (horizontal above) is narrow but not busy and with good visibility 75

Each tour lead will have a sign to hold up to gather their specific groups. The morning tours will have several groups amassing at once, so be sure to spread out. DCNR will have 16 kayaks (+ kayak for the guides) Pocono will have 16 inflatable kayaks + kayaks for the guide & Tom. Pre-inflate kayaks at 8:00am. RTC staff can assist as available. The kayak put-in location is next to the campsite Moonlight Tour June 12 (prior to Rest Day) 4:00pm Gather all kayakers at 3:30pm by the campsite pavilion. Brief instructions are to be given (duration, Blue House/Lock, 2 groups, must wear PDF by Pocono Staff. Count off to divide in half by Kayak Lead). Only Pocono Whitewater kayaks, DCNR is not on this tour. Morning Trip Gather all kayakers at 9:00am by the campsite pavilion. Brief instructions are to be given (duration, Blue House/Lock, 2 groups, must wear PDF, count off to divide in half by Kayak Lead). Pocono will take the 1st group, paddling by 9:30am. Pocono group will head north, toward Blue House. DCNR group paddling by 9:45am and will head south (left) towards the Lock. Tom will join the Pocono group and serve as the nature guide. Afternoon Trip #1 Gather the group at 1:30pm near the campsite pavilion and repeat the above process with Pocono aiming for a 2:00pm departure and DCNR aiming for a 2:15pm departure, with groups back circa 4:00/4:15pm. Tour Washington Crossing Tour Logistics Tour Start Time: 10:00am and 1:00pm Washington Crossing Tour is in two parts Upper Tour includes Bowman s Tower, Thompson-Neely House, and the Soldiers Graves Lower Tour includes the museum and village 118 people are signed up for the tour Gather the group at 9:00am and divide the group in half, 60-ish per group Group 1 will start with the Upper Tour at 10:00am and Group 2 will start with the Lower Tour, both groups will come back at lunch time and then switch tours. Group 2 will need to ride their bikes to the Museum 4.5 miles south on the trail. It s a ½ mile walk from the campsite to the Preserve POC will gather up the sojourners at the campsite pavilion and lead them over to the Preserve. Payment via credit card is necessary for those on the tour. $6/adults, $4/seniors age 65+. 98 Washington Crossing to HMP Day 5: Route Procedures Day 5 will have the riders head back north towards Hugh Moore Park. They will first encounter the stairs in New Hope, PA two miles after starting their ride. Shortly after this they will come to the another small bridge and road riding section in the town of Solebury Township, immediately north of New Hope. This road section is not very long and the speed limit is low, however it s curvy and there is not great visibility. They will reconnect with this trail in Hal H. Clark Park, it is an obvious and easy reconnection once they turn into the park. After that they ride north along the D&L Trail until they come to the lunch location in Tinicum Park. After lunch they continue north and arrive at the Durham Aqueduct for the first and only water stop of the day. From there they ride straight through until they reach Hugh Moore Park.
