16 Susquehanna River Valley s Great Outdoors State Parks, Forests, and Points of Interest Shikellamy State Park has two distinct areas. The park office is located at Packers Island between Northumberland and Sunbury. There is a large marina, picnic tables, and paved trails. The marina provides access to boating on Lake Augusta during the summer months when an inflatable dam spanning the Susquehanna River creates a 3,000-acre compound used by boaters and water-skiers. Fishermen can always be seen at the base of the dam. The other section of the park, Shikellamy Overlook, is located across the river from the marina and provides panoramic views of the confluence of the North and West branches of the Susquehanna River. Phone: Web: Shikellamy/index.htm Milton State Park Milton State Park, an island in the West Branch of the Susquehanna River, provides opportunities for picnicking, hiking, and a play area with soccer and ball fields. The southern half remains wooded and is a favorite launching spot for canoes and kayaks. Phone: Web: Milton/index.htm In the mountains west of Lewisburg are Sand Bridge and Raymond B. Winter State Parks in the Bald Eagle State Forest. Hiking, camping, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, and picnic areas are available there, as well as swimming and fishing in the chilly water at Half Way Dam. Phone: Web: RaymondBWinter/index.htm CHIMNEY ROCKS is a part of the WHITE MOUNTAIN RIDGE which rises to 2,250 feet in Union County, Pennsylvania. Located near the geographic center of the state in BALD EAGLE STATE FOREST, this area is home to some of PA s highest ridges and is a popular area for hikers. 22 HISTORY & HERITAGE Dale-Engle-Walker House See website for hours and tour times Strawbridge Road Samuel Dale, a Scots-Irish immigrant who represented this region in the state legislature, erected the original 1793 limestone house. A stone addition was built in the 1840s; the large wooden porch was added 40 years later. The property s history reflects how the region s agricultural practices changed over time. The Dale family rented the farm to a series of tenants for over 80 years. The Engle family purchased the property in 1929 and operated a dairy there from 1936 until In 1957, Charles and Rosemary Walker bought the house and farm. Forty-four years later, the Union County Historical Society assumed ownership of the 137-acre property, much of which is still actively farmed. The Linn Conservancy maintains the adjacent Dale s Ridge Hiking Trail. House tours focus on Central Pennsylvania history, agriculture, architecture, and slavery. Rotating exhibits feature artifacts and memorabilia from the Society s collection as well as items on loan for display. The original basement kitchen is furnished with period cooking implements. The wagon shed contains vintage farm vehicles and tools. The Society also provides speakers to give local history presentations before school, scout and social groups. Packwood House Museum See website for hours and tour times. 15 North Water Street In 1972, Lewisburg native and Bucknell graduate, Edith Kelly Fetherston placed her house on Market Street in historic downtown Lewisburg and its extensive collection of antiques and art in a trust for the educational benefit of all persons. That house is now the Packwood House Museum. The earliest section of the building was erected in the late 1790s as a tavern along the Susquehanna River. Over the next 100 years, the building was expanded, becoming a hotel to serve canal, turnpike, and railroad traffic. In 1892, the hotel and carriage house behind it (now the Tour Center on Water Street) were converted into seven rental units. In 1936, Edith Fetherston and her husband John returned to Lewisburg. They renovated the building and converted it into a house furnished with her vast and eclectic collections of 18th-20th century furniture, textiles, decorative arts, Oriental art, and Pennsylvania crafts. Visitors today see the house much as Edith and John left it. Open for guided tours, Packwood House features two major exhibits each year, plus a wide range of other programs. Muncy Historical Society 40 North Main Street Muncy, PA MHS, through community outreach and partnerships, cultivates among its many audiences, a broad appreciation and awareness of the region s past and inspires and fosters learning through engaging and unique experiences.
