8 History Center About the History Center The History Center is home to the Allen County-Fort Wayne Historical Society, its museum and collections. When formed in 1921, the society s assets were few, consisting of some historical relics that had been preserved by the Mary Penrose Wayne Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Today it maintains a collection of more than 26,000 artifacts, photographs and documents representing the history of Fort Wayne and Allen County. The largest of these is the very building in which the society has resided since the 1893 City Hall building designed by Fort Wayne architects John F. Wing and Marshall S. Mahurin. 17 14TH ANNUAL CHRISTMAS ON BROADWAY GOVERNOR ERIC HOLCOMB TO LIGHT CHRISTMAS TREE AS THE MAGIC OF THE HOLIDAY SEASON BEGINS! Frontier Communications Fireworks to Brighten the Skies Sweetwater to Join Celebration with Holiday Concert at The Clyde ABC21 to Provide Live Coverage of Tree Lighting and Fireworks 35,000 LIGHTS TO ADORN FORTY FOOT BLUE SPRUCE Frontier Communications, Lake City Bank, Sweetwater, St. Joseph Hospital (Lutheran Health Network), Prairie Farms, and Trinity English Lutheran Church to sponsor holiday kick-off on Friday, November 16, Governor Eric Holcomb will kick off the Fort Wayne holiday season next month, as he continues the 14 year tradition of Christmas On Broadway when he lights the magnificent 40 foot Colorado Spruce. Christmas On Broadway will be on Friday, November 16, 2018, at 5:30 p.m. and features the spectacular tree lighting and fireworks display in front of the Shine & Hardin building on the Broadway Plaza. We are pleased to have Governor Holcomb join the thousands of attendees who are present for the event, as well as those who view the festivities on television. Governor Holcomb s participation demonstrates his commitment to our neighborhoods and families by being present to share the spirit of the holidays in the core of the City of Fort Wayne, said law partners Steve Shine and Tom Hardin of the law firm of Shine & Hardin, who have organized the event since its inception. Over 35,000 colored lights will be lit simultaneously with a spectacular display of fireworks underwritten by Frontier Communications, making Christmas On Broadway one of Fort Wayne s premier holiday events. From its start 14 years ago as a neighborhood holiday celebration with only 150 people in attendance to now, in what has become a community wide celebration where more than 4,000 people come to kick off the holiday season, Christmas On Broadway is a holiday tradition and a must see event for the entire family. This year, Christmas On Broadway welcomes a new corporate sponsor, Sweetwater, bringing a musical addition to the celebration, to be held at The Clyde in Quimby Village, 1808 Bluffton Road, which borders the Broadway Corridor. Doors for the all-ages show will open at The Clyde at 7:00 p.m. on November 16th for the TOWER OF POWER 50th Anniversary Tour 2018 with special guests The Sweetwater All- Stars Holiday Celebration. Christmas on Broadway, has grown far beyond a celebration of the Broadway Corridor, which has become a source of pride for all of Fort Wayne, said Steve Shine and Tom Hardin. From the St. Joseph Hospital anchor position on the north end of the Corridor, to the eminent development of the Electric Works in the middle of the Corridor, to the rejuvenated Clyde on the south end of the Corridor, Broadway has recaptured its image as a thriving component of Fort Wayne s success story, Shine and Hardin said. In the spirit of celebrating the holidays in the neighborhoods, which are the strength and core of our community, Frontier Communications is once again pleased to help underwrite the lighting of the Christmas tree and simultaneous fireworks display, which has become a citywide holiday tradition, said Greg Stephens, Senior Vice President of Frontier s Central Region. Frontier is proud to give back to our community in many ways and this event, in particular, is an occasion in which families and neighbors gather together to begin the celebration of such a joyous time of the year, said Stephens. Sweetwater is proud to be a corporate sponsor of Christmas On Broadway and we re excited to compliment the visual magic of the tree lighting and fireworks with the incredible musical artists we ll be offering at The Clyde that evening, said Jeff Ostermann, Vice President of Performance Improvement at Sweetwater and Interim Executive Director of The Clyde. Chuck and Lisa Surack s significant financial investment and Sweetwater s ongoing support of The Clyde as a worldclass arts & entertainment venue have helped inject even more vibrancy into a very proud neighborhood and we look forward to sharing The Clyde with the many attendees of Christmas On Broadway, said Ostermann. Tickets for the TOWER OF POWER 50th Anniversary Tour 2018 with special guests The Sweetwater All- Stars Holiday celebration can be purchased online at at The Clyde Theatre box office, Neat Neat Neat Records, Wooden Nickel and the Sweetwater Concierge Desk. Christmas On Broadway is the kickoff of Fort Wayne s holiday season and adds excitement and fun to the Downtown Improvement District s HolidayFest. To allow as many people as possible to view the color and excitement that the tree lighting and fireworks provide, this year, as in years past, ABC21 will provide coverage of the celebration on the station s 6:00 p.m. newscast on Friday, November 16, 2018, with Matt Leach reporting live from the Broadway Plaza. ABC21 Vice President and General Manager, Merry Ewing, in commenting on ABC21 s continued participation in Christmas on Broadway stated, ABC21 is committed to our city and understands that strong neighborhoods result in strong communities. Year round, ABC21 maintains a camera overlooking the Broadway Corridor as part of our Skyview Network. This helps demonstrate our commitment to spotlighting neighborhoods as part of the fiber of our city. Seven historic neighborhoods converge to make the Broadway Corridor and ABC21 recognizes the importance of keeping these neighborhoods strong, said Ewing. The Broadway Plaza, in the heart of the 07 neighborhoods, is located in front of the Shine & Hardin Building. The celebration brightens the city s center core with a forty foot Colorado Spruce adorned with over 35,000 lights. This year s tree was donated by the Craig and Patty Beyer family of Fort Wayne. Each year, Mudrack Tree Services places the tree into its secure position within a large Christmas tree stand constructed by crews assembled by the Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. - Indiana/ Kentucky Chapter. Electrical service to the tree is supplied by Custom Control and Machine, with the tree itself decorated by A Yard Apart. Other grounds preparation will be undertaken by Vision Scapes. This year, the Christmas tree will be lowered into Photo courtesy of John McGauley place on Monday morning, November 12th, with live television coverage beginning at 5:30 a.m. on ABC21 and radio coverage on Sunny FM. Again this year, attendees will be treated to cookies from Ellison Bakery, as well as holiday beverages provided by Prairie Farms, which will include hot chocolate and eggnog. Prairie Farms joins the five other major organizations that sponsor the event, which are Frontier Communications, Lake City Bank, Sweetwater, St. Joseph Hospital (part of the Lutheran Health Network), and Trinity English Lutheran Church. Also participating in this year s event are media sponsors, ABC21 and Sunny FM, as well as Mudrack Tree Services, Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. - Indiana/ Kentucky Chapter, Custom Control and Machine, Vision Scapes, A Yard Apart, Asher Agency, the Downtown Improvement District, Gregory & Associates Insurance, and Shine & Hardin, LLP. In addition to the lighting of the tree, visitors will be able to take part in other family friendly activities, all free of charge, including a visit and photo opportunity with Santa and Mrs. Claus, refreshments, rides on the Polar Express train and the chance to see and pet a live reindeer. Children can also take part in a coloring contest in which they can color their own Christmas tree for the chance to win prizes. The coloring contest form is available on WPTA21.com, 1039sunnyfm.com and the page opposite of this article. Entries must be received at ABC21 by Friday, December 14, The winners, who will be announced between 6:30 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. on Friday, December 21, 2018, on ABC21 s morning news and Sunny FM, will receive Visa Gift Cards from Lake City Bank, holiday CDs from Sunny FM and DVDs from ABC21. The Christmas tree will remain illuminated nightly from Friday, November 16th through the first week of January, giving the neighborhood and the community a chance to enjoy the beauty of the holidays through the New Year. The area is represented by many of Fort Wayne s longest-lasting and dedicated neighborhoods, including the Creighton-Home, Historic South Wayne, Historic Oakdale, Fairfield, Illsley Place, Williams-Woodland and the West Rudisill neighborhood associations. Christmas On Broadway has become a holiday tradition, signaling the start of the holiday season in Fort Wayne. For 2018, the celebration promises to be even more spectacular, as it enters into its fourteenth year of brightening the holidays. Not only have residents from the neighborhoods surrounding the Christmas tree made this an annual tradition, but also, so have families all across Northeast Indiana and Northwest Ohio. Each year, as the crowd grows, so does the neighborhood pride up and down the Broadway Corridor, said partners Shine and Hardin. Clips of the Christmas On Broadway tree lighting ceremony will be included as part of the telecast of Steve Shine s Annual Holiday Marathon, to be broadcast on Christmas Day from 8:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. on MyTV Fort Wayne, Channel 21.3 (over-the-air). The program features classic holiday programming and interviews with local celebrities who share with the viewing audience how they spend the holidays with their families. The Holiday Marathon will also be broadcast on December 25, 2018, on Comcast Channels 252 and 1024, Frontier/Fios Channel 9, Mediacom Channel 10, and DirectTV Channel 22. 18 Here Comes Santa Claus The holidays haven t truly started until you see Santa lit up in Fort Wayne! For three quarters of a century, the famous Santa display has been a sparkling downtown attraction for area families. Images of it may very well be the most recognizable of our city. What a journey Santa has had through the years. The display was first created in 1940 from sketches drawn by G. Irving Latz, secretary and treasurer of the Wolf & Dessauer department store. Wolf & Dessauer, formerly at the corner of Washington Blvd. and Calhoun St. in downtown, was known for their wonderful customer service, quality merchandise, and breathtaking Christmas displays. Fort Wayne s Santa was designed to rival lighting displays common in New York and Chicago at the time. Brinkman Corp, a local sign company, brought the design to life. After 44 days of dedicated labor by craftsmen who often worked 18 hours per day, the Santa was finished just in time for the holiday season. Santa and his reindeer first graced the side of Wolf & Dessauer on the eve of Thanksgiving In keeping with tradition, the display continues to be lit on that same night every year. Only a few years after its debut the onset of World War II kept the Santa display dark. Local historians say the Santa wasn t lit from 1942 to 1944 to reduce the chance of enemy planes easily spotting the city of Fort Wayne at night. With the return of peace, Santa returned to his place on the side of Wolf & Dessauer s south wall in November of From that Christmas to 1958 Santa and the reindeer made their annual appearance to the delight of thousands of area residents. In February 1959, Wolf & Dessauer moved to a new building and for a variety of reasons the display went into storage for the next 21 years. The Wolf & Dessauer department store was eventually acquired by LS Ayers and that could have been the end of a timeless Fort Wayne tradition, were it not for a chance discovery made by a GTE telephone installer in the spring of Jim Green found the Santa display in an old warehouse and enlisted the local media to rekindle interest in the Santa display. For 45 days, the city of Fort Wayne came together to bring the lighting display back to life. Members of more than a half-dozen local trade unions, along with the Chamber of Commerce and scores of interested citizens, donated the expertise, money, supplies and time necessary to restore one reindeer. After 200 hours a single reindeer was lit on the side of the Fort Wayne National Bank building. The overwhelming nostalgic response prompted enthusiasm sufficient to continue the restoration project through most of On the eve of Thanksgiving, November 27, 1980, 40 years after it first appeared in Fort Wayne and 22 years since it had last been seen, the Santa Claus display made its long awaited comeback in downtown. The display s massive size 24,717 bulbs, 155 feet long and 5 ½ tons was dwarfed only by the crowd s response. Over the years, enthusiasm for the Santa has continued to grow. In 2007 the display was updated with new LED energy efficient bulbs. It now shines even more brightly on the side of PNC Bank as the centerpiece of holiday tradition for Fort Wayne. A special thanks goes to Shambaugh & Sons, Greg Finner and Iron Workers from local 147, and the English Bonter Mitchell Foundation for maintaining this Fort Wayne treasure. We re honored to brighten the holiday season every year with this display, says Corinna Ladd, Northern Indiana PNC Bank Regional President.
