The brick house by the Lingerfield road-side, and directly opposite the park gates is what is left of the old Manor House, the house of the Slingsbys before Scriven Hall was built (16 th -cent building). 3 10. Speight says there were at one time three public-houses in Scriven, viz- Shoulder of Mutton, the last closed about (F332). The Three Horseshoes, the middle win, facing down the green, closed before (F332). The (old) King s Head. On the right of the last named win; closed before 1854 (F332) F There were thatched cottages on the green, one of them being the blacksmith s. K The earliest Scrivens ( Foresters of Knaresborough ) claimed descent from one Gamel, the fowler, who is said to have had a confirmation of his land in Scriven from Hen. The Scrivens assumed an hereditary right in the office of Steward or Chief Forester of F of Knaresborough F329-30: M385-6: 387-8:( illegible margin note in pencil) 19. The Scrivens made a number of marriages with local heiresses,+ thus acquired much of the adjoining land. M 384-5: cf. F The last of the Scrivens was Henry de Scriven ( temp. Edw.II) who had two daughters, Johanna and Agnes.
