A coach house dating to Building File Number BF All the roofs except Blacksmith's Cottage are tiled, but the coverings of roofs need frequent replacement and many may earlier have been thatched. The structure of the roofs is more instructive. All the earliest houses as well as two barns have common rafter roofs without principal trusses, a roof form that is both early and lowland in origin. Three more houses (Blacksmith's, Ivy and Earl's Cottages) have principal trusses without tiebeams, the blades simply birdmouthed over the wallplate. The only other roofs we have seen do have tiebeams: Peartree's front roof which was built in the late 18th century, and the roofs at Park Corner and Spinney Croft which have kingpost trusses of the early 19th century. Other roofs which should be compared with these are the Old Coach House, which is securely dated by its contract to 1682, and has tiebeam trusses with collars and two pairs of butt-purlins, and the roofs of some outbuildings. I have mentioned the two 17th century barns at Hazel Heads and Peartree with single aisles and common rafter roofs with side-purlins. There are also the great barns at Hazel Heads with late 18th century tiebeam trusses, and two buildings with 19th century kingpost roofs - the garage at Old Hall and a former smithy between Roundells and Corner Cottage. 6 Scriven Conservation Seventeenth Century Builders Contracts During the Second World War the Hall was requisitioned and then, in 1952, destroyed by fire, the coach house and stable block being converted into a new Hall The document was copied from the original by the permission of the owner, the Rev. Charles Slingsby of Scriven near Knaresborough. Sir Thomas Slingsby, who is party to the deed, was the son of Sir Henry Slingsby, Bart., who was beheaded in 1658, and Barbara, daughter of Viscount Fauconbert. He was High Sheriff of Yorkshire immediately upon the Restoration and Governor of Hull in He married Dorothy, daughter and co-heir of George Cradock of Caversall Castle in Staffordshire. He died about 1685, leaving by his wife who predeceased him, three sons and three daughters. The building here agreed to be rebuilt is still standing, a very picturesque edifice of stone and brick, on the north side of Scriven, and is now used as a coach-house and stable. This building was formerly the stables and coach house, the original hall having been destroyed by fire in Built in 1682 for Sir Thomas Slingsby it was converted to a residence in 1966.It is constructed of gritstone rubble with ashlar details and has plinths and quoins. The roof is of graduated stone slate and the building consists of two storeys and seven x one bays. The west face has three steps up to a central twentieth century glazed door in a chamfered round archway with imposts and keystone all in a raised ashlar panel. The Slingsby shield is contained in a segmental broken pediment above the door. The ground floor windows are not original apart from the one on the far left. These are two-light chamfered mullion windows with raised, quoined jambs throughout. The first floor windows are restored and that over the door considerably wider. These are again two-light as in the ground floor. There is a moulded first floor string which continues around the left return. There are moulded eave cornices and the building has a hipped roof. There is a stone stack to the left of bay two and a rendered stack at bay five. To the rear there is a central twentieth century panelled door in a chamfered shallow-pointed arch with a coat of arms and a fragment of chamfered moulding. The fenestration is twentieth century matching the south front. There is a blocked up first-floor opening to the left of the entrance the walling being in ashlar finish above the eaves to form a bellcote with clock and weathervane. The bell is in a moulded arch surmounted by an ogee finial, flanked by columns with moulded triangular tops. The left return has three-light mullion windows at ground and first floor levels, the upper ones having recessed chamfers. The right return has a two-piece lintel to a shallow chamfered four-centred archway with glazed door and inserted windows. Interior: The south room is divided by a spine beam and two cross beams with ovolo and cavatomoulded plasterwork. This room was the Grand Stable; the rest was stabling, botheys and lofts. Part of the building was used as a brewhouse during the nineteenth century and at that time the range was used as a farm outbuilding. The 1682 building contract still survives. A History of Scriven Scnven Hall The present Scriven Hall was converted in modern times from a Coach House and stables built in 1682.
