7. Description Inventory No. PG: 81B-008 Condition excellent X good fair deteriorated ruins altered Prepare both a one-paragraph summary and a comprehensive description of the resource and its various elements as it exists today. The, also known as the Dyson Farmhouse, at Piscataway Road is a two-and-one-half-story cross-gabled structure. Constructed of wood frame and re-clad in vinyl siding, the house features a prominent wrap-around porch. The dwelling has a T-shaped plan created by the addition of a two-story ell soon after its construction. The property is sited on the east side of Piscataway Road, south of Joseph Drive, in Clinton, Maryland. Mature trees are located along the eastern and southern property lines. Farmed fields are located to the north and east. Three secondary resources are located on the property. Additionally, a modern prefabricated shed (not surveyed) is located northeast of the dwelling. Two paved semi-circular driveways are located on the western edge of the property. DWELLING The is two-and-one-half stories in height. The single dwelling was constructed in two phases, forming a T-shaped plan. Facing north, the four-bay-wide by three-bay-deep main block was constructed in the late nineteenth century. The front-gabled two-bay by one-bay ell was constructed c Both sections of the building are constructed of wood frame with a parged concrete foundation. Since the house was surveyed in 1985, the asbestos shingles that covered or replaced the original weatherboard siding have been replaced with vinyl siding. The main block of the dwelling has a side gable roof with a central projecting front gable covered in asphalt shingles. The ell has a front gable roof covered in asphalt shingles. Overhanging eaves and a boxed ogee-molded cornice with returns embellish the roofs. Interior corbelled chimneys of brick construction are located within the main block and the ell of the dwelling. A one-story wrap-around porch extends along the façade (north elevation) and west (side) elevation of the main block. The porch is covered by a half-hipped roof that is supported by turned wood posts. Since the 1985 on-site survey, the original 1/1 windows with square-edged wood surrounds and louvered wood shutters have been replaced with 6/6 vinyl-sash windows with vinyl shutters. Although the interior of the dwelling was not accessible during the time of the on-site survey, it was accessed during the 1985 on-site survey. The surveyor noted that there is no basement, but the handhewn sill beams of the main block could be observed from a crawl space. 1 The dwelling s main entrance, located on the eastern portion of the main block s façade (north elevation), is a single-leaf replacement wood door with a 1-light transom. This is the original entrance to the main block; the primary entrance is now located on the west (side) elevation of the main block. 1 Susan G. Pearl, Dyson Farmhouse, (PG: 81B-8) Maryland Historical Trust State Historic Sites Inventory Form (1985), 7:1.

Maryland Historical Trust Maryland Inventory of Inventory No. PG: 81B-008 Number 7 Page 2 Three 6/6 vinyl-sash windows are placed on the first-story façade (north elevation) of the main block. Fenestration on the second story of the main block consists of four 6/6 vinyl-sash windows. A 1-light lunette window is located in the open front gable. A secondary entrance is located on the west (side) elevation of the main block. This secondary entrance has become the primary entrance to the dwelling due to its proximity to the driveway. The offset singleleaf replacement wood door has a 1-light transom. Two 6/6 vinyl-sash windows are also placed on the first story, to the north of the entry. Three 6/6 vinyl-sash windows are located on the second story. A 1- light lunette window is placed in the gable end. Single 6/6 vinyl-sash windows are located on the first and second stories of the south (rear) elevation of the main block, to the west of the ell. The front-gabled ell, constructed c. 1902, is placed on the south (rear) elevation of the main block. Two 6/6 vinyl-sash windows are located on the first and second stories of the west (side) elevation of the ell. While a single 6/6 vinyl-sash window is placed on the first and second stories of the south (rear) elevation of the ell. A one-story addition, constructed after 1985, is located on the east (side) elevation of the main block. The addition is covered by a shed roof and is clad in vinyl siding. Fenestration on the east (side) elevation of the addition consists of a single 6/6 vinyl-sash window and a single-leaf wood door on the first story. A wood deck extends from the addition across the east (side) elevation. The second story of the east (side) elevation of the main block is visible above the addition. It is pierced by two 6/6 vinylsash windows. A two-story addition, constructed after 1985, is located on the east (side) elevation of the ell. The addition is covered by a shed roof with a central front gable. The addition is clad in vinyl siding. A 3- light bay widow is placed on the first story of the south (side) elevation. Other fenestration was not visible at the time of survey due to mature trees near the rear of the dwelling. The interior of the dwelling was not accessible at the time of the on-site survey.

Maryland Historical Trust Maryland Inventory of Inventory No. PG: 81B-008 Number 7 Page 3 GARAGE A one-story, two-bay garage is located south of the dwelling. Based on its form and materials, the garage appears to date from c The wood-frame structure is clad in vinyl siding. The garage has a side gable roof covered in asphalt shingles. Two roll-up paneled wood doors are located on the façade (west elevation). The interior of the garage was not accessible at the time of the on-site survey. SHED (1) A wood-frame shed is located southeast of the dwelling. Based on its form and materials, the shed appears to date from c The one-story, one-bay structure is clad in weatherboard siding and is covered by a front gable roof. A single-leaf opening is located on the façade (west elevation). The interior of the shed was not accessible at the time of the on-site survey. SHED (2) A wood-frame shed is located south of the dwelling and garage. The shed is partially obscured by mature vegetation. Based on the form and materials, the shed appears to date from c The onestory, one-bay structure is clad in vinyl siding and plywood. The shed is covered by a front gable roof with exposed rafters. A corrugated metal and plywood door is located on the façade. The interior of the shed was not accessible at the time of the on-site survey. SITE OF TOBACCO BARN AND OTHER OUTBUILDINGS During the 1985 on-site survey, a large tobacco barn was identified southeast of the house near the road. The wood-frame structure was clad in wide vertical siding and covered by a tin roof. 2 The tobacco barn is no longer extant. The 1985 MIHP form also noted other outbuildings associated with the property, but did not identify or describe them. Thus it is not clear if those resources were extant at the time of the 2007 on-site survey. 2 Susan G. Pearl, Dyson Farmhouse, (PG: 81B-8) Maryland Historical Trust State Historic Sites Inventory Form (1985), 7:2.

Maryland Historical Trust Maryland Inventory of Inventory No. PG: 81B-008 Number 7 Page 4 INTEGRITY The retains a moderate level of integrity, including its late-nineteenth-century and c forms, wrap-around porch and lunette windows. Late-twentieth-century additions on the east (side) elevations of the main block and ell have not visually altered the form of the building, as seen from Piscataway Road. Recent window replacement and vinyl siding have not compromised the design or workmanship of the building, but have compromised the integrity of materials. Sited in rural Clinton, Maryland the farmhouse retains its integrity of location, setting, feeling and association. The garage associated with the retains a low level of integrity. The structure retains its integrity of association, feeling, location, and setting. The structure, clad in vinyl siding and covered with an asphalt shingle roof, has lost its integrity of design, workmanship, and materials, resulting in an overall low-level of integrity. Shed (1) retains a low level of integrity. The shed is in poor condition and is covered by small trees and mature vines. The integrity of the workmanship and materials is moderate. The shed retains much of its original features, including the wood access door. The integrity of feeling and setting are compromised due to the overgrown state of the shed as well as the depleted condition of the materials. The building retains its integrity of location. Shed (2) retains a low level of integrity. Based on the current poor condition of the structure and the surrounding environment, it appears the shed serves no function. The current poor condition of the shed has effected, and compromised, the integrity of association, feeling, setting, materials, and design. The shed retains its integrity of workmanship and location. Exposed rafters and overhanging eaves are still present on the shed. The and property retains an overall moderate level of integrity.

(For compliance projects, complete evaluation on a DOE Form see manual.) STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE The, also known as the Dyson Farmhouse, is located at Piscataway Road in Clinton, Maryland. The dwelling is a good example of late-nineteenth-century vernacular domestic architecture in Prince George s County. The dwelling, consisting of a large main block and two-story ell, retains its character-defining wrap-around porch and lunette windows in the gable ends. The property also retains its rural setting with rolling hills and cultivated farm fields surrounding the property to the north, east and south. The building retains sufficient integrity to convey the characteristics for which it is significant. HISTORIC CONTEXT The is located along Piscataway Road between the village of Piscataway and the town of Clinton. The property is on a parcel of land known as Bealle s Mill Place, above the Piscataway Creek. 3 The 1861 Martenet Map of Prince George s County indicates a blacksmith shop operated by G. A. Havener existed on the property. 4 The hand-hewn finish of the sill beams visible in the crawl space of the main block suggest part of the dwelling may date from this time period. 5 George A. Havener, a 24-year-old blacksmith, and his family resided in the Piscataway area at the time of the 1860 census. 6 Clinton, Maryland, is located in the southern portion of Prince George s County. Economic changes that occurred from the end of the Civil War ( ) to the turn of the twentieth century are still visible in the landscape of southern Prince George s County. During this period, local agriculture practices transitioned from large plantations to small farms. 7 3 Susan G. 7 Maryland Historical Trust Maryland Inventory of Inventory No. PG: 81B-008 Number 8 Page 2 The original Gwynn-Parker farm consisted of acres and was owned by Bennet and Eleanor Gwynn, who owned many acres of land in the Piscataway area following the Civil War. 8 The 1985 MIHP form notes that the Gwynn family never occupied the property, despite owning it during the period in which it was improved by the construction of the farmhouse. The 1870 census supports this, listing Bennet F. Gwynn, a 42-year-old farmer, his 40-year-old wife Eleanor, and three young children living in the Surratts area of Prince George s County. 9 The 1878 Hopkins Map of Prince George s County lists a Benj. Gwynn residing on the property. 10 Benjamin Gwynn was not Bennet Gwynn s son but perhaps he was a part of the extended family. 11 In c. 1902, when Raphael Parker purchased the acre farm, he added the front gable ell, which formed the T-shaped dwelling that exists today. 12 During the 1985 on-site survey, a large tobacco barn was notated to the southwest of the house near the road. This structure is no longer standing but probably dated to the period when Parker was farming the property before the parcels of farmland were separated from the land associated with the dwelling. Raphael Parker lived in the dwelling in Clinton at the time of the 1920 and 1930 U.S. census with his wife Mary H. and their five children, Raphael E., Baker Z., Mary H., Ella Gwynn, and Mary R. 13 Parker sold the dwelling along with 11.6 acres of land to his son-in-law Elmer C. Dyson and his daughter Ella Gwynn Dyson in Elmer Dyson, a farmer, and his family lived on the property at the time of the 1930 census. Elmer and Ella were both born in Maryland, as were their three sons and three daughters. 15 For the later part of the twentieth century, the property was home to the Dyson family. Ella Gwynn Parker Dyson s middle name suggests the Parkers and Dysons may have been related to Bennet and Eleanor Gwynn. In 1975, the property was purchased by William and Margaret Cave, the present owners. 16 The Caves have since altered the dwelling including installing new synthetic siding, replacing windows, and adding the two additions and a deck on the east side elevation. 8 Bennet and Eleanor Gwynn, Prince George s County Land Records, HB 6: U.S. Federal Census, Surratts, Prince George s County, Maryland, Series M593, Roll 592, Page 252, Bennet F. Gwynn. 10 G.M. Hopkins, Atlas of Fifteen Miles Around Washington, Including the County of Prince George Maryland (Philadelphia: G.M. Hopkins, C.E., 1878). 11 Census research confirms Benjamin Gwynn is not a direct descendant of Bennet and Eleanor Gwynn but it could not confirm a Benjamin Gwynn living in Piscataway during this time period. 12 Susan G.
