5 WHO HEALTH DEFINITION According to the World Health Organization (WHO) Health is: a state physical, mental and social well being and not merely the of complete absence of disease or infeimity. In this definition wellness can be equated with health. 5

Wellness assessements versus illness Predictive - individual health promotion based on diagnostic of genetic and environment determinants Holistic - whole being (physical wellbeing; mental awareness and wisdom; spiritual harmony and equilibrium). In this approach to health (chinese, ayurvedic and integrative medicines), the wellness treatments and therapies aim to restore the vital balance between body, mind and spirit, towards an equilibrium and health harmony. This harmony rebalances and restores the energy flow, bringing about overall wellbeing. Integrative - bringing together orthodox western medicine/alopatic; another eastern holistic medicines Chinese, Ayurvedic; Indigenous Phytotherapeutics knowledge and environmental consciousness. Integrative medicine enphasize wellness, wholeness (holistic) and a preventive approch of health. 6

8 HEALTH AND WELLNESS TOURISM Health and Wellness Tourism includes travelling (national and international) to places and facilities such as hospitals, clinics, thermae, thalasso, medical and wellness SPAs and fitness centers. The purpose of Health and Wellness Tourism is medical care and health, beauty, relaxation, recovery and rehabilitation treatments. There are more than a hundred million health and wellness tourists, around the world per year. The Health and Wellness Tourism includes: medical tourism; elderly age tourism;disability tourism; thermal tourism; and thalassotherapy tourism. 8
9 HEALTH AND WELLNESS TOURISM Health Tourism refers to those clients who would travel to diferent places (national and international) to be submitted to healing therapies namely in hospitals, clinics, thermae and thalasso centers. The Health Tourism includes: Medical Tourism, Aesthetical/Plastic Tourism, Thermal Tourism and Thalassotherapy Tourism. Wellness Tourism includes those consumers who travel to maintain his or her wellbeing and life satisfaction, through the experience of healthy treatments. Wellness has to do with quality of life wellbeing, relaxation and stress control. 9
10 HEALTH AND WELLNESS TOURISM The Medical Tourism comprises travels to hospitals, clinics, thermae and thalasso centers, for medical treatments in different areas: cardiology, gynaecology, neurology, oftalmology, oncology, orthopaedic, transplants, preventive medicine, artificial insemination, anti-aging medicine, plastic reconstrutive medicine. Medical Tourism is also known: Medical Travel; Health Tourism; Health Travel; Healthcare Tourism; Health Care Abroad; Medical Overseas; Overseas Medical. Inbound Medical Tourism/Outbound Medical Tourism Medical tourism destinations countries are: Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Dubai, El Salvador, France, Germany, Greece, Guatemala, Hungary, India, Israel, Italy, Jordan, Malaysia, Mexico, Philippines, Poland, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Srilanca, Thailand, Tunisia, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, United States of America, Venezuela, Vietnam. In 2012 it was estimated that are a million medical travelers all aroud the world (outbound/inbound Medical Tourism)and about 100 billion dollars global industry. 10
11 HEALTH AND WELLNESS TOURISM IN PORTUGAL Health and Wellness Tourism is one of the ten strategic touristic products in Portugal. Health and Wellness Tourism is a composit touristic product wich includes: hospitals, clinics, thermae, thalasso centers, SPAS and medical assisted residences and resorts In Portugal there are about 40 thermae, 8 thalasso centers, 220 non- mineral water SPAs, about 30 hospitals and clinics and some medical assisted residences and resorts 11
