2 A Message From Your Surrey Fire Fighters To all participants, The Surrey Fire fighters are pleased to host the 18th Annual Surrey Fire Fighters Sr. Girls Goodwill Basketball Classic. The tournament is organized and hosted by the Surrey Fire Fighters and we are excited to see so many Surrey Secondary Schools participating in the tournament this year. To help make the tournament run smoothly Salish Secondary and the Cloverdale Recreation Centre has stepped up to host some games at the beginning of the tournament as well as Lord Tweedsmuir throughout the entirety. We would like to thank all the staff and students who have volunteered their time for the tournament, as well as many businesses and charity groups. We wish each team good sportsmanship and lots of fun. As part of our scholarship program for high school graduates, we aim to recognize those committed to education and outstanding volunteer service in the community. Several $750 scholarships will be awarded to worthy recipients at this year s tournament. We are pleased to be able to include this feature in the tournament, and congratulate all students that help to build a strong community through volunteerism. Criteria: Each recipient is a graduating student with a Point Average of 2.50 or better and has applied in writing stating her accomplishments and goals in both academics and community service. Although academic and athletic achievements are important, emphasis on extraordinary school and community volunteer service are weighted strongly. This year (2019) marks the 18th anniversary of the classic, which means over $1,000 in bursaries has been awarded to Goodwill recipients. Of course, this would not have been possible without the financial commitment from who have put their trust in the Surrey Fire Fighters Foundation to deliver these funds back into the community. On behalf of The Surrey Fire Fighters, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to the schools that have come together to host this exciting tournament your actions demonstrate leadership and Goodwill in your community and that s what it s all about! 3 A Message From The Superintendent Of Schools (2016) Dear Athletes and Coaches Welcome to the 15th annual Surrey Firefighters Senior Girls Basketball Goodwill Classic. This tournament promotes the importance of goodwill and sportsmanship. As we approach this season of giving, I am thankful for the many who are contributing to this event. Acts of goodwill in the service of others and giving to those in need is a foundation that makes us proud to live in this great province and nation. The youth of today demonstrate in powerful ways their passion for making this world a better place. This commitment is a gift to the future that will pay dividends in profound ways. On behalf of the Surrey School District, I want to offer heartfelt thanks to our tournament sponsor - the Surrey Fire Fighters. Our firefighters commit their time and energy to numerous charitable works throughout the community, and exemplify a spirit of giving. I also greatly appreciate all the tournament organizers and volunteers at Lord Tweedsmuir, Earl Marriott, Fleetwood Park, Kwantlen Park, Panorama Ridge and Princess Margaret Secondary Schools for making this event possible. Your many hours of planning and preparation are very much appreciated. Finally, it is important to honour all our coaches for the commitment they make to our young athletes.
