An examination of the preliminary accounts for 1970 indicates that the finances are barely sufficient to cover the expenses-mainly that of producing this magazine. Your Committee has considered a possible increase to 2s. 6d. or 3s. Od., and finally decided that there must be a goodly number of residents who are not members. Therefore, we shall make strenuous efforts to enrol more members next year. With this thought in mind it was agreed to retain the subscription at 2s. Od. per year-which nicely equates with the 10 new pence of COLLECTORS OF SUBSCRIPTIONS The Association needs several people who are willing to collect its subscriptions, for which a remuneration will be paid. It is thought that this job should appeal to anyone who has retired and is able to go out in the evenings from Easter-time onwards. If you would like to help in this way please contact the Hon. Treasurer, Mr. J. W. Broome, at 114 Links Way. MINISTER GETS TOWN HALL PLAN Watford Council's blueprint for a three-way split of local government power in Hertfordshire has been sent to the Minister of Housing and Local Government. The plan would unify Watford, Hemel Hempstead, St. Albans, Berkhamsted, Bushey, Rickmansworth and Chorleywood as a single unit of about half-a-million people. This would be a "day-to-day" authority, while they advocate a higher level Council embracing Hertfordshire, with part of Bedfordshire and part of Essex. This scheme is certain to find favour with many residents who foresee a productivity deal with lessening cost. Archaeology Watford & South Herts Archaeological Society, Mr. R. C. 4 WE HEAR THREATENED CLOSURE OF THE L.M.R. LINE For the past few years the operation of the railway from Watford to Croxley Green (LMR) has been subsidised, and now the Railways Board think it should be closed because it is uneconomic. This Association is one of the 53 objectors who have made a case to the Transport Users' Consultative Committee. A public inquiry will be held in Watford Town Hall on October 21st at a.m., when the two local authorities will open by presenting a case for the retention of this railway and other objectors will also be heard. GREEN BELT The Association is making inquiries to ascertain the extent of the planning permit given to London Transport allowing them to fence land between the canal and Frankland Road, and, for the past seven years, to raise the level of the land by dumping hardcore and sleepers. When the land was fenced it denied the use of footpath from Frankland Road. In this latter respect the Council's Clerk suggests the Association press the matter with London Transport direct "as a Residents' Association might carry more weight". The footpath is incidental to the semi-industrial usage to which the land has been put and it is felt that if something is not done to restore the land to grass it might be used as railway sidings. DR. A. L. FERGUSON The organisers of the retirement fund are pleased to announce that 255 was donated by patients, and Dr. Ferguson was presented with a cheque and a Hacker radio in teak case. YOUTH CLUB During the summer the first spit was dug to commence the building of the new Youth Centre. A. DICKINSON & CO. REGISTERED PLUMBERS and HEA TlNG ENGINEERS 64a Valley Walk, Croxley Green WATFORD WATFORD ROAD () ACTION GROUP The group is finding considerable support for their activity and membership is rising rapidly. At the present time a Petition is going round in support of the unenviable situation of the Uxbridge Road (Riverside) Residents' Association who are having a battle royal to prevent the County Council from fulfilling a plan to demolish many houses in Uxbridge Road (A412) prior to widening the road. CROXLEY WOODS The Association has been pressing the Council to carry out further tree work since that done in "Forestry Year 1964". It is now learnt that some seven acres in the east part of the woods will be dealt with this winter. BULK BUYING The Urban District Council's Association are to investigate-and probably recommend-an area purchasing department whereby many commodities needed by local authorities could be purchased in bulk with expected savings. The County operates a vast purchasing department with experienced buyers of many commodities especially for schools. CROXLEY CAMERA CLUB Their tenth anniversary is celebrated this year and the Club meets every Wednesday at 7.45 p.m. in The Guildhouse. New members will be most welcome. SAFETY BARRIER IN WATFORD ROAD The Council has considered the plea for a safety barrier at the kerbside between All Saint's Church and Yorke Road, but so far no decision is known! STATION CAR PARK Rickmansworth Council are negotiating with London Transport to take over the station car park. 5 AND OBSERVE METROPOLITAN LINE TRAINS For several weeks there has been frequent cancellation of business men's trains, and the frequency has recently become a daily occurrence. The Association has complained to London Transport. The Chief Operations Manager declared he had only received a few complaints, so if the matter concerns you do not hesitate to write to London Transport. A recently imposed increase of 20 per cent in the fares, coupled with the embarrassment of arriving late for work, makes a demand for restitution of a regular service justifiable. 300,000 TOWARDS THE NORTH ORBITAL ROAD Many people are still of the opinion that when the North Orbital Road is in being the diversion of heavy through traffic from the A412 will make the conversion of Scots Hill a waste of money. Therefore it is said, withhold the expenditure from Scots Hill and turn it into the first donation of 300,000 plus towards the cost of the North Orbital Road! MEALS ON WHEELS Everyone has heard of the "Meals on Wheels"- few will know, however, that during the past seven years, voluntary workers have delivered over 18,000 meals to the sick 'and aged in Croxley Green alone. This service was started in 1963 by what was then the W'y.S., but which now enjoys Royal Patronage and is known at W.R.Y.S. For four years these meals were kindly prepared and cooked by The Sun Printers Ltd. When the "Red Cross Centre" in Barton Way was completed in 1967 they took over the preparation and cooking, and the meals were then collected by voluntary workers consisting of one driver and one helper, and delivered to the needy. The operation of collecting and delivering takes approximately 11- to 2 hours-between p.m. to approx. 2 o'clock. More drivers and helpers are need to meet increasing demands on this service-possibly you have a spare couple of hours-only once per month-that you feel you would like to devote to a good cause, if so, would you please contact Mrs. King-Jones, 98 Baldwins Lane-Watford who will be pleased to give you further details and will be most grateful for your help. THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH SCOTS HILL Although we learn that Scots Hill is to be "renovated" early next year, this Association says again "there is nothing wrong with Scots Hill-it is the unwieldy lorries which usually cause the trouble". Witness the buses who daily climb the hill, and they never break down. The intention of the re-modelling scheme is to make the upward gradient more gradual, but in so doing we shall have a dual-carriageway of two differing levels. Residents in Copthorne Road will only be able to turn left if they exit from their road into Scots Hill and will have to climb the hill in order to proceed to Rickmansworth. A S!'100TH ROAD That part of Links Way which is in the Watford Rural District Council's area has recently been well re-surfaced. The responsibility for doing so is with the County Council's western area Highways Department, and the Association derives some pleasure in knowing that the effect of much correspondence over several years has brought this about. The smooth condition of this part compares very favourably to the rather unsatisfactory work which Rickmansworth Council had carried out on the part of Links Way within their area. The contractor for this job omitted to tar and stone places where cars were 'in his way! RICKMANSWORTH PLUMBING HEATING SUZANNE 24 HOUR SERVICE EMERGENCY! HERTS. DICKINSON SQUARE Anxiety is felt about a small part of South West Herts., namely the area north of Little Green Lane towards Chandlers Cross. The area in question is largely in occupation of Killingdown Farm, which is partly tenanted, partly owned. A change has taken place recently, for this year has seen small fields become big fields, and big fields into bigger fields, with the consequent loss of the hedges. The latest development is the erection of four-strand barbed wire fences. Fence No. 1. Fixed around woodland adjacent to the path from Little Green Lane almost as it joins Sarratt F.P.l8. Fence No. 2. The Woodlands along Rousebarn Lane from about opposite the Public Car Park in Whippendell Woods, to near the footpath from Jacobs Hill to Redheath. For many, many years, the public have had access to these wooded areas, for walks in them and for longer walks via Chandlers Cross, etc. This is not now possible, and fear is felt at their possible fate. These particular stretches were all part of the Estate formerly owned by Lord Ebury. After the break-up, when the new owners were felling the big timber, the late Lord Brocket and the Herts Society made an approach. This was about 25 years ago, and, it was understood, the estate land north of Little Green Lane had been sterilised and protected. (Contributed by Mr. R. J. Figg, 12 Warwick Way.) The residents of Dickinson Square wish to express their appreciation to Rickmansworth Council for the improvements made to the garden area. To add to further improvement they ask for the iron fencing to be repaired and painted. CASSIO BRIDGES The new dual carriageway came into operation early in July, although a press report says the work is not likely to be finished until November. The new bridges and dualling of the road must be accepted as being an improvement at this place; its introduction, though, constitutes a serious fear to the residents along Watford Road and nearby roads. They (as reported elsewhere) have been quick to unite in the formation of an action group. LIGHT-CONTROLLED PEDESTRIAN CROSSING Yet another few months have passed without any progress being made for the installation of the longawaited new pedestrian crossing to be eventually sited about 40 yards west of the existing crossing adjoining New Road/Watford Road. The Chairman is Mr. L. Brown, 74 Baldwins Lane, and the Secretary is Mrs. J. Sorrell, 55 Winchester Way. WHAT'S MY LINE? Someone who would have been a challenge to the former television favourite programme is Mr. John Harper, who lives in Winton Drive. He designed all the front metal pipes which now gleam into the gothic stonework of the Lady Chapel at St. Albans Abbey. And his work is there for all to see and admire. We are still at a loss (after reading a report in "The Echo") to know how he would have described his job to the Panel; his job is to dismantle, clean and reassemble organs.. PEOPLE IN THE NEWS Congratulations to Mrs. D. Leary, who was awarded the M.B.E. in the Birthday Honours List, in recognition of her services to the National Savings Movement. To Mr. P. R. Simpson of Beechcroft Avenue, who has been called to the Bar of the Inner Temple. To Mr. B. S. M. Campbell of Manor Way, who has been exhibiting brass rubbings from churches all over the country. And praise to Mr. Thomas Moult, who has held his own exhibition of paintings and drawings. May we venture to suggest this might be repeated locally? So if you can assist please contact Mrs. Hewitson. The first big venture was held on September 25th when Mr. Warren of the Ministry of Social Security gave an informative talk on Supplementary pensions.
