1 Table of Contents Society of Economic Geologists Foundation, Inc. IOCG and Copper - Silver Districts of Northern Chile May, 2011 PARTICIPANT INFORMATION PACKET I. Instructions, CHECKLIST and Recommendations 1 Prior to Departure 1 In-Country 2 General 3 II. Field Course Itinerary 4 III. Maps 6 Page Read the following instructions and recommendations carefully. Anyone arriving in Antofagasta without the required safety gear and appropriate clothing (as set forth below) will not be permitted to participate in the field course. I. Instructions, CHECKLIST and Recommendations Prior to Departure Chilean Visa: Participants should check their Chilean visa requirements well in-advance of travel to Chile; for some nationalities, the visa may be obtained on the flight to Chile. Valid Passport: All participants must have a valid Passport that is not due to expire within 6- months of your visit to Chile. Information Required by SEG prior to departure: o Passport information: All participants must submit to SEG their Passport information (name, country of issue, date of expiry) this is required for access to mine properties. o Proof of Insurance Coverage: Participants must provide to SEG proof of insurance coverage valid in Chile. Carry your insurance ID card with you at all times during the field course. o Liability Waiver Form: Prior to participation in the course, you must sign and submit to SEG a liability waiver form, provided by SEGF. Safety and Field Gear: All participants must bring the following equipment/clothing required for mine visits there will be no opportunity to obtain these items once the field course begins: Long pants and Long-sleeved shirts Hardhat STEEL-TOE boots Reflective vest Gloves Eye protection (not sunglasses). Page 1 of 9
2 Prior to arriving in Chile, purchase a tour book/guidebook (with maps), such as Lonely Planet or Fodor s. This will provide essential travel information, as well as some insight into the history and local customs of Chile. Photocopy your Passport: It is a good idea to carry a photocopy of your Passport with you, separate from your Passport and Chilean Tourist Card (issued on arrival, see below), and keep safe. Climate: The weather in northern Chile during May is generally balmy but can be cool, especially in the evenings. Bring layers of clothing for the warm, breezy days to cool evenings. Remember that long pants and long-sleeve shirts are required for mine visits. The high altitude and bright sun in northern Chile require sunscreen, lip balm, sunglasses, and a hat with a brim as essentials. Mobile phone use. Avoid expensive roaming charges. Most carriers offer limited-duration International call packages allowing for affordable calling and text messaging to your home country while travelling overseas. Check with your provider before departure. Also, you must make sure your device will operate in Chile check your provider s website. In-Country Upon arrival at the Santiago Arturo Merino Benitez International Airport ( SCL ), participants of U.S. nationality need to complete a Tourist Card this allows stays of up-to 90 days and must be shown to Customs when leaving Chile so do not lose it! US Nationals must also pay a one-time Reciprocity Fee (US$140), paid in the Immigration Area prior to entering the lines that lead to the passport checkpoints. Look for signs. ALL participants should change currency to the Chilean Peso ( CLP ) at SCL there will not be an opportunity to change currency once the field course begins. ATM cards are honored at most bank ATM machines, and funds can be withdrawn at very low cost. Try this at bank ATMs in SCL before resorting to the more expensive Currency Exchange booths outside the baggage claim area. Instructions for those traveling by bus to Antofagasta: o Upon arrival at SCL, collect your baggage and go to kiosks in lower level arrival exit area and purchase a transfer bus ticket on Tur-Bus Aeropuerto shuttle service to Santiago downtown, cost $1,700 CLP (approx. US$3.70). If you wish to take a cab to the downtown bus station, book and pay for the licensed cab at one of the kiosks outside baggage claim. o Get off the shuttle bus at the Los Heroes Metro Station. SEE ATTACHED MAPS. o Departures to Antofagasta are from the Tur-Bus station across the boulevard, northeast from Los Heroes Metro Station, at Av. Libertador Bernardo O Higgins N o (corner of Fanor Velasco). SEE ATTACHED MAPS or ask the transfer bus driver for directions. Page 2 of 9
3 o At the Tur-Bus station immediately check the timetable for departures to Antofagasta, and purchase a ticket on a sleeper-bus for the 24-hr ride from Santiago. These sleeper buses are a safe, comfortable and reliable way to travel throughout Chile. Pillow and blanket are provided; movie, snack and restroom on-board. There are three classes of service (Semi, Salon and Premium, fared by comfort of seat and recline at 60, 65 and 180 ). The economy Semi Cama is least expensive at $12,900 to 16,100 CLP (depending upon bookings; US$28-35). Be sure to note the departure time, as buses are on a strict departure timetable. o After arriving at the Antofagasta Tur-Bus station, it is an easy walk (approx. five-blocks, +20m uphill to the SSE) to the Costa Marfil Hosteria, at Capitán Arturo Prat Chacón 950; (tel: (+56-55) ). It is not necessary to take a taxi, which would cost approx $2,000 CLP (US$4.35). PLEASE SEE ATTACHED MAPS. 7:00 pm, May 14th, Safety, Logistics, and Orientation Meeting at the Hotel Tatio, on the coast side at Avenida Grecia 1000; (tel: (+56-55) ).
