LETTER FROM ROBERT SHUH, PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD Dear Stakeholders, Through MiCrédito's work in 2015, Nicaragua s micro and small entrepreneurs experienced more and better social and financial inclusion. From the perspectives of both the organization and the clients we serve, we seek to protect the trust and respect of our clients and our partners was a very exciting year in the life of MiCrédito, and the future looks even brighter. We launched a new branch in Masaya and continue to work towards further expansion throughout the country, in order to offer our clients the best possible service. We also continued to provide training and continuing education to our staff regarding issues such as money laundering prevention, accounting, and regulation. We reached a record number of 7,036 clients, with 58% being women, thus providing support to working families throughout Nicaragua. On behalf of MiCrédito s Board of Directors, I would like to acknowledge the tremendous contribution of the employees in serving the needs of our clients. We are very thrilled to see improvements in the lives of the many Nicaraguans who partner with us and look forward to many more advances in 2016 as MiCrédito continues on its path of sustainable growth. Warm regards, Robert Shuh President-MiCrédito Board of Directors 3

ABOUT US WHO ARE WE? MiCrédito is a Nicaraguan-based microfinance institution focused on providing financial services to micro and small entrepreneurs often overlooked by the formal financial system. MiCrédito provides a variety of loans and services for its clients including: Standard Loans Rural Loans Temporary Loans Student Loans Solar Energy Loans Sanitation and Housing Loans Health Services Debit Cards and Savings Accounts OUR MISSION: To create business solutions that include both social and financial support to micro and small entrepreneurs, providing for a more prosperous future. OUR VISION: To evolve into an institutional bank in order to contribute to the economic and social development of micro and small businesses in Central America. 4

A SHORT HISTORY MiCrédito s principal partner, the Mennonite Economic Development Associates (MEDA) has been involved in micro-finance in Nicaragua since 1990, initially through Fundación CHISPA. In 2000, Fundación CHISPA partnered with other investors to establish the first regulated microfinance institution (MFI) in the country named CONFIA. Two years later, MEDA decided to sell its shares in CONFIA to the other partners to help recapitalize the institution and to bring in new investments. In 2004, MEDA decided to establish a new financial institution called MiCrédito to provide an improved level of service to the underserved rural market in Nicaragua. Some of the key staff that participated in CHISPA were instrumental in creating MiCrédito. In the last 12 years, MiCrédito has made important steps toward institutional growth through an increasing number of clients, branches, assets, and staff and also through its development of regulation processes. For example, in October 2012, the organization began the registration process with the National Microfinance Commission (CONAMI) and received formal recognition in early The organization has also continued to establish partnerships with external funders in order to develop financial inclusion programs for micro and small business owners in both rural and urban areas of the country and also to improve staff training and the use of key technologies. Consistent with its mission and vision, MiCrédito continues to work with clients, partners, shareholders, and CONAMI to provide social and financial support to Nicaragua s micro and small business owners. 5

MICRÉDITO IN NUMBERS: ACHIEVEMENTS IN 2015 At the end of 2015, MiCrédito had a loan portfolio of USD $9.4 million. This figure represents annual growth of 39.9%. The institution closed the year with more than USD $12 million in assets. Of MiCrédito s 7,036 clients, 58% were women and the average loan amount was USD $1,238. 6

URBAN RURAL MiCrédito is committed to serving Nicaragua s poorest workers and merchants. These individuals have typically remained outside the target market of the country s banking institutions. Often, women and rural producers do not benefit from financing plans or credit. Given this service gap, MiCrédito has designed innovative programs which provide social and financial inclusion to these clients, so that they are able to grow their businesses. 7

The graphic below shows the division of MiCrédito s loans by credit size. 17.5% of the loans disbursed in 2015 were between $1 and $1000, while 50.2% were between $1,001 and $5,000, meaning that the majority of MiCrédito s loans target micro producers and businesses. 8

AREAS OF SERVICE Commerce, services, and agriculture were the three most important sectors for loan disbursement in In addition to these sectors, financing was also provided for fishing, home renovations, personal consumption, and other economic activities. Through providing micro-credit to rural and urban business owners, MiCrédito supports a sector of the population that is underserved by standard banks which consider these clients to be outside their target market. 9

SOCIAL IMPACT Another important priority for MiCrédito is the expansion of financing for programs with high social impact such as housing, solar panels, sanitation, and education. In 2015, MiCrédito disbursed more than USD $1 million for these four programs. Financing for education through the MiCrédiEstudio program reached USD $470, 301 while USD $347,505 in credit was provided for housing. In addition, the institution disbursed USD$ 158,106 in credits for solar panels and USD $83, 347 for sanitation improvement. In terms of financing for sanitation improvement, MiCrédito approved 132 loans (66% of which were given to women), benefiting 660 people. Loan Portfolio-Social Programs 12/31/2015 MiCrediEstudio $470,301 Housing $347,505 Solar Panels $158,106 Sanitation $83,347 $0 $50,000 $100,000 $150,000 $200,000 $250,000 $300,000 $350,000 $400,000 $450,000 $500,000 10

OUR STAFF In 2015, the organization reached 98 employees, of which 45 work as loan officers. It is important to highlight that approximately 65% of MiCrédito s employees are women. The continuing education of MiCrédito s staff was also an important focus. In 2015, the loan officers received training in money laundering and terror financing prevention and in the use of the KIVA platform. Training sessions were also provided for cashier and customer service staff and operations managers, which focused on accounting and regulation. The management team participated in international training sessions in Panama, Italy, and Chile. 11

HEALTH CARE MiCrédito provides health care benefits to its staff, allowing employees to receive medical and dental exams at low prices. This program ensures that 100% of the staff receive regular medical exams. In 2015, approximately 60% of MiCrédito s employees received the medical treatment that they needed through this program. The institution also met 80% of the current occupational health and safety standards in all of MiCrédito s branches. GENDER POLICY It is typically assumed that Nicaraguan society is male-centered, or machista in popular terminology, because men exercise a dominant role in almost all social spheres and determine the role of women in society. This concept has caused inequality between men and women in both the personal and professional spheres and has assigned 12 females to a submissive role. MiCrédito aims to change these sexist behaviors and has therefore established and promoted its Gender Policy. The Gender Policy s principal objective is to empower female staff to make positive decisions both as professionals in the institution and also in their personal lives. A fundamental aspect of the Gender Policy is the facilitation of workshops on gender. In 2015, MiCrédito facilitated three of these workshops. The workshops cover topics such as self-esteem, perspectives on gender in the workplace, violence against women, physical and mental health, professionalism, and personal finances, among others. All of the workshops promote participatory learning.

SUPPORTING EDUCATION New Support for MiCrédiEstudios In 2015, MiCrédito continued to support young entrepreneurs and university students through the MiCrédiEstudios program. Up until last year, during the implementation of the first stage of MiCrédiEstudios, the MiCrédito disbursed USD $470,301 to students in need of funds to pay for registration fees, technological equipment, language courses, and entrepreneurship projects. These funds were disbursed principally by the Leon, Managua, and Granada branches. MiCrédito is planning to begin the second phase of the program in 2016 with the goal of providing $32 million cordobas (USD $1.1 million) to clients in areas like Rivas, Estelí, Matagalpa, and Chinandega. In July 2015, MiCrédito marked International Students Day by participating in a session on financial education and inclusion at Managua s American College. Representatives of MiCrédito s management team spoke with thirty university students in various academic programs about MiCrédito s education financing program, MiCrédiEstudios, and encouraged them to use these financing options in order to continue their education or start their own businesses. 13

NATIONAL GROWTH New Branch in Masaya In November 2015, MiCrédito began working on a new branch in the city of Masaya. With the opening of this branch, MiCrédito now operates 11 branches throughout the country. The Masaya branch serves producers and merchants that live in the western part of the country, including the area known in Nicaragua as the plateau of the peoples. The clients live in both rural communities and urban areas. This branch offers a varied portfolio of services including housing, agriculture, education loans, commerce, and services. With the opening of this new point of service, MiCrédito has consolidated its presence in the Pacific side of Nicaragua in the northern territories (Estelí, Matagalpa), centre (Teustepe, Boaco), southeast (Rivas, Granada, Masaya), west (Leon, Chinandega), and Managua. 14 As part of MiCrédito s expansion plan, over the course of 2016 the institution will carry out factfinding studies to establish a new branch.

GROWING TOGETHER: CLIENT IMPACT STORIES 16

Expanding a business Patience and creativity are two characteristics that define Rosaura and María del Rosario Castillo. The sisters have dedicated their whole lives to producing beautiful garments in the city of Granada. Rosaura began working as a seamstress with her mother when she was 14 years old. Now, the two sisters manage their own workshop that focuses on producing and selling custom-made items, through dividing work responsibilities. Rosaura works on design and cutting the fabric while María del Rosario embroiders using the sewing machines and also works on promoting and selling the products. The business has grown through the support of MiCrédito over the past five years, allowing the sisters to contract other workers in their community. As Maria del Rosario outlined: we have three seamstresses and two embroiderers. Our life has changed a bit, because without credit we could not continue with our business, our family was very poor so with this credit, we are able to grow our business. 17

Cooking up a storm At more than 50 years old, Vidal Sánchez serves the customers in her cafeteria as if she were still a young woman. Vidal operates the cafeteria in the busy Cotran bus terminal in the northern city of Estelí. She has been running the business for 32 years, but it was initially operated by two of her nieces. When they finished their university education, Vidal began to work in the cafeteria. Thanks to this business, I was able to help my nieces to receive university education. One is an architect and the other a business administrator and both are now working in their fields, so I am now in charge of the cafeteria. Vidal has received various financing products from MiCrédito over the past six years, including seasonal micro-credits and home improvement loans. 18 According to Vidal, they [MiCrédito staff] have always treated me very well, so I think they will be able to help me with my next business project. She wants to open a tortilla stand in her new home and eventually move her cafeteria there in order to stop paying rent.

Improving household sanitation Concepción Quiroz can t help but smile when she tells her story. This cheerful woman has always lived in the La Ceiba neighborhood of Granada. Describing her house, she notes: this space used to be a boarding house, but a few years ago, the owner started to sell it to the occupants, which is how we came to own the house. The house did not have a bathroom. Concepción s was one of many families that use outdoor latrines. Thanks to her good credit rating, Concepción was granted a MiCrédito loan of USD $930 for the construction of her bathroom, which has a shower, toilet, and sink. She says that the new bathroom will allow us to stop risking our health. Concepción s next goal is to improve her home s roof, with the support of MiCrédito. 19

STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS In 2015, the network of foreign funders continued to provide MiCrédito with the trust and financial support that has permitted it to implement each of its programs. At the beginning of 2015, Walter Van Woudenberg, one of MiCrédito s most important investors visited the institution in Nicaragua. With the financial support of Van Woudenberg of approximately USD $1 million, it has been possible for MiCrédito to develop programs focused on health and education, which have an important social impact. MiCrédito s financing structure is composed of capital from Europe and North America (51%), MEDA funding sources (43%), and the institution s Nicaraguan partners (6%). 20

In 2015, MiCrédito also developed new alliances, including a partnership with the Honduran organization Fundación Codevo. With this organization, MiCrédito is planning to develop a project to support the country s rural sector. MiCrédito is also working with Habitat for Humanity to support the improvement and construction of housing through technical assistance in various parts of the country, especially in the northern and western regions. Appui au Developpement Autonome (ADA), an NGO headquartered in Luxembourg is another partner which has begun to support MiCrédito s work in Nicaragua. Last but not least, in 2015 the institution implemented all of the recommendations of the Smart Campaign which seeks to protect the rights of micro-finance clients around the world. 21
